Reception and charts

Allmusic critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine described Clapton's guitar playing as "perfectly fine, but never interesting." He only assigns two of the five possible rating units for the album and summarizes it as an album that is suitable for fans who are more interested in Clapton but not in his music. Tom Moon from Rolling Stone magazine awards the work three out of five possible stars and notes "how painfully often it becomes clear that this car is on the road with a cruise control".

The album reached number 21 in the German charts and stayed in the charts for a total of eleven weeks. In Austria and Switzerland, One More Car and One More Rider were only able to position themselves on ranks 37 and 26. In the UK, the album was # 69 and only stayed in the UK Top 40 for a week . In the United States, the album reached number 43 on the Billboard 200 in 2002 and number 102 on the Internet's top albums chart.
