Přerov (German Prerau ) is a Czech city on the Bečva in the Olomouc region with about 47,679 inhabitants (2008) . Přerov is located about 22 km southeast of Olomouc . In the past, the city was an important hub and the heart of Moravia .
history
The town of Přerov was first mentioned in 1141 and was elevated to the status of a royal town in 1256 . The castle belonged to the influential von Zierotin family . Johann Amos Comenius attended the Latin school in Přerov, of which he was director from 1614.
After the Battle of White Mountain in 1620, a phase of decline began due to the following war damage and the general depopulation of the country after the Thirty Years War. In 1636 Wallenstein's brother-in-law, Charles the Elder of Žerotín, died here .
With the construction of the Kaiser-Ferdinand-Nordbahn from Vienna to Prerau, the city's renewed upswing began. During the time of Austria-Hungary Prerau was the seat of the district administration of the Prerau district.
In June 1945, 265 refugees were murdered by Czech militia in Přerov on the Schwedenschanze on the outskirts of the city; the event is known as the Prerau massacre .
