Rolf Römer (musician)

Rolf Römer (born June 1, 1939 in Wiesbaden ) is a German jazz musician ( tenor saxophone ).

Life

Römer studied classical clarinet at the Frankfurt University of Music . When he became interested in jazz , he switched to the alto saxophone , and later to the tenor range . He first played in US clubs and lived in Paris between 1963 and 1969 . Paul Kuhn brought him into the SFB Big Band in 1969 ; with her he was involved in numerous television productions with international stars such as Ray Brown , Ray Charles and Quincy Jones . He also belonged to the Berlin Dream Band , which presented itself under the direction of Stan Kenton and Oliver Nelson at the Berlin Jazz Days in 1969 and 1970 and was documented on record. Between 1981 and 2004 he was a member of the WDR Big Band Cologne , where he developed into one of the main soloists. On the side he studied composition with Bob Brookmeyer in 1994/95 . Since 2004 he has been living with his wife in Berlin again, where he is involved in various band projects. He can also be heard on albums by Francis Coppieters , Sonny Gray and Bill Dobbins .
