Vias is a small town and municipality with 5719 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hérault department in the Occitania region in southern France . It is located between the cities of Agde and Béziers . The main branches of the economy are tourism and agriculture (especially viticulture ). The Béziers-Agde-Vias regional airport is located in the area belonging to Vias . The old tower is in the city center, the new building is on the outskirts of the nearby small town of Portiragnes .
history
Vias is first mentioned in a document in 899 . According to a charter of the diocese of Agde, the Vias fiefdom goes back to a Gallo-Roman manor from the time of Roman colonization. In the 12th century the village was fortified with protective walls made of black volcanic stone. Of the four city gates from this period, secured with drawbridges, only the Saint-Thibéry gate remains today . The fortification of the city was further strengthened by building the fortified church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste (1394-1424, Monument historique since 1907 ) in line with the protective walls.
After the Second World War , the city walls were largely destroyed in order to facilitate the expansion of the city.
