Mesut Özil [ ˈmesut ˈœzil ] (born October 15, 1988 in Gelsenkirchen ) is a German football player . After his first professional stint at FC Schalke 04 , he played at Werder Bremen and Real Madrid . He has been under contract with Arsenal FC since September 2013 . Özil is the son of Turkish parents and was a Turkish citizen until he was 18 , but opted for a career in the German national team . He played a total of 92 internationals for these and became world champion in Brazil in 2014 . In 2018, he resigned from the national team following a controversy over a photo with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan .

Life

Özil's father came to Gelsenkirchen in the 1960s as the son of a Turkish guest worker from Devrek on the Turkish Black Sea coast , which is why Özil had Turkish citizenship . He took this off at the end of 2007 in order to be naturalized in Germany . Özil grew up with an older brother and two younger sisters in the Gelsenkirchen district of Bismarck . He has a half-sister from an extramarital affair of his father Mustafa. He acted from July 2011 to October 2013 as his sports advisor and manager, a task that Mesut's brother Mutlu has carried out since then. Turkish was spoken in the family and instead of a kindergarten, Mesut Özil attended a preparatory school, where most of the classmates were also of foreign origin and Turkish was also spoken among each other. According to his own statement, German was only spoken with the teacher and there were also many classmates of Turkish origin in the school, which meant that Özil had difficulties learning the German language.

From 2000 to 2005, Özil attended the comprehensive school in Berger Feld in his hometown, which he left with secondary school leaving certificate. He is considered cautious and shy in public . He counts the French soccer player Zinédine Zidane among his role models .

In 2012, Özil commented on the recurring question of his citizenship and national identity as follows:

“In my life I have spent more time in Spain than in Turkey - am I then a German-Turkish Spaniard or a Spanish German-Turk? Why do we always think so within limits? I want to be measured as a footballer - and football is international, that has nothing to do with family roots. "

- Mesut Özil

Özil was in a relationship with the singer Mandy Capristo from January 2013 to October 2014 . In November 2015 it was confirmed that Özil and Capristo are a couple again. In July 2017 his relationship with the Turkish- Swedish actress and Miss Turkey 2014, Amine Gülşe , became known. The couple got engaged in January 2019. The wedding took place in the presence of the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan , who acted as best man , on June 7, 2019 in Istanbul.

In his youth, the left-footed player first played for several Gelsenkirchen clubs and later for five years for Rot-Weiss Essen . In the summer of 2005, Özil moved to the youth department of FC Schalke 04 . In 2008 he was transferred to Werder Bremen , from where he moved to Real Madrid in 2010 . He has been playing for Arsenal since 2013 .

Schalke 04

With the A-Juniors of FC Schalke 04, for whom he scored ten goals in the 2005/06 season , Özil won the German A-Juniors Championship on June 4, 2006 (2-1 in the final against FC Bayern Munich ). From the 2006/07 season he was a member of the Schalke professional team. Özil played his first competitive games in the senior division against Bayer 04 Leverkusen and Bayern Munich in the 2006 DFL League Cup . On August 12, 2006 (1st matchday) he made his Bundesliga debut in the 1-1 draw at home against Eintracht Frankfurt when he was substituted on for Hamit Altıntop in the 80th minute . In total, Özil made 19 appearances in the Bundesliga in his first season, in which he was runner-up with FC Schalke 04.

In the first half of the 2007/08 season he had not yet finally established himself, although he had made six of his eleven appearances in the starting line-up and was also used four times in the Champions League . In January 2008, the association announced that it did not want to extend the contract that ran until June 30, 2009. This was preceded by discrepancies in the upcoming contract negotiations between Özil's father and the player's agent on the one hand and the club management of FC Schalke 04 on the other.

Werder Bremen

As a result, Özil moved on January 31, 2008, the last day of the winter transfer period, to Werder Bremen , where he signed a contract dated June 30, 2011. On April 26, 2008, he scored his first goal in the Bundesliga with his goal to make it 2-1 in the 3-3 draw in the away game against Karlsruher SC . He was used twelve times in the second half of the season, six of them in the starting line-up. As in his first year as a professional at FC Schalke 04, Özil was runner-up with Werder Bremen.

In the following season he was used from the start and played his way into the regular formation until the fifth match day. With 14 assists he was the most important goal setter in the team. At the end of the season Werder Bremen was in the middle of the league. The 2008/09 cup competition was successful and the DFB Cup was won . In the final, Özil scored the decisive goal for the 1-0 win over Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Internationally, he played 14 times for Werder this season: After leaving the Champions League after the group stage, he and the team reached the final of the UEFA Cup, which was lost to Shakhtar Donetsk .

In the 2009/10 Bundesliga , Özil became a key player in the Werder team. He was again the most successful assists and scored nine goals. On May 1, 2010, he played his 100th Bundesliga game in the Schalke Veltins-Arena and scored the 1-0 lead in the 55th minute of the 2-0 away win against his former club. In the end, Werder reached third place in the table. Werder were also in the DFB Cup final for the second time in a row ; it ended 0: 4 against FC Bayern Munich.

In August 2010, Özil moved to Real Madrid for around 15 million euros . He made his debut in the Primera División on August 29, 2010 at the start of the season, when he came on after half-time in a 0-0 draw at RCD Mallorca . In the 1-0 home win over CA Osasuna on the following match day, Özil was in the starting line-up for the first time. On matchday six he scored his first goal in the Primera División in a 6-1 home win over Deportivo La Coruña . Overall, Özil completed 36 league games in his first season in Spain, 30 of which were from the start. He scored six goals, made 19 assists and was runner-up behind FC Barcelona with Real Madrid . The Catalans also retained the upper hand in the Champions League semi-finals. In the group stage, Özil had previously scored his first goal in the Champions League against AC Milan . The duel with Barcelona in the Spanish Cup final was won by the Madrilenians. Winning the Copa del Rey meant Özil's first Spanish club title. He immediately established himself as a regular in Madrid.

In his second year in Spain, Özil, who had his shirt number 10, traditionally the playmaker's number , at the start of the season , came under fire after a weak first half of the season. The rank of playmaker was overtaken him during this time by his teammate Ángel Di María . When Di María was absent for a long time in the second half of the season due to injury, Özil managed to build on the performance of the previous season. He was part of the core of the team and played 35 games this season. With 121 goals, the Real storm around Cristiano Ronaldo set a new league record, Özil was the best preparer of the league with 17 assists. Real Madrid won 32 of the 38 games of the season and secured the Spanish championship with a new record of 100 points. In the semi-finals of the Champions League, Özil met FC Bayern Munich with Real and scored a goal in the 1: 2 first leg defeat in Munich; After the 2-1 draw in the second leg in Madrid, the penalty shoot-out was lost and Real Madrid were unable to make it into the final for the second time in a row.

Since his game showed fluctuations in performance at the beginning of the 2012/13 season, as in the previous year , Real Madrid signed Luka Modrić, another creative player, after the start of the season. On April 20, 2013, Özil completed his 150th competitive game for Real Madrid in the league encounter against Betis Sevilla , in which he scored two goals. Although he did not win a title nationally or internationally at the end of the season, Özil increased his scoring risk with nine goals in the league and also made 13 assists. For the 2013/14 season , Real Madrid signed another game designer, Isco . After Özil was not used on matchday three against Athletic Bilbao , while Isco had scored two goals to win 3-1, Özil decided to leave the club the following day. The week before, he had ruled out a move despite the competitive situation. During his time at Real, Özil had played 159 competitive games and scored 27 goals.

Arsenal FC

On September 2, 2013, on the last day of the transfer period, Özil surprisingly moved to the Premier League for Arsenal for around 50 million euros . With his move, he became Arsenal's most expensive purchase, Real Madrid's most expensive sale and the most expensive move by a German to date (this record is said to have been set by Leroy Sané in 2016). He became a team-mate of his national team-mates Lukas Podolski and Per Mertesacker . Özil made his Premier League debut on September 14, 2013 in a 3-1 away win against AFC Sunderland . With Arsenal he won the FA Community Shield and the FA Cup in 2014 and 2015, respectively . In the 2015/16 season , Özil gave the most in the Premier League with 19 assists.

His contract with Arsenal FC runs until 2021.

In spring 2020, Özil and two other players from the club rejected a wage waiver of 12.5%, which Arsenal FC had agreed with its players due to the high costs in the wake of the Corona crisis. With his annual salary of € 20,000,000, Özil would have had to forego around € 200,000 per month.

National team

Junior national teams

Özil was considered for the first time for German youth national teams at the age of 17 - comparatively late . In September 2006, the then U-19 national coach Frank Engel nominated him for the U19 . Özil then made his international debut on September 5, 2006 in a 1-0 away win over Austria . On March 21, 2007 he scored his first international goal with his goal for the interim 1-0 in a 2-0 home win over Georgia . Özil was also part of the German squad at the U-19 European Championship 2007 in Austria. There he scored in the first two preliminary round matches against selections from Russia and France and failed with the team in the semifinals against Greece . In total, Özil played eleven international matches for the U-19s until July 2007 and scored four goals.

At the age of 18, he was appointed to the U-21 national team in September 2007 by the then U-21 national coach Dieter Eilts . Özil scored a goal in his debut game in the 3-0 away win over the Northern Irish selection on September 7, 2007.

In November 2007, Özil, whose father immigrated to Germany with his parents when he was a child, applied to be released from his Turkish citizenship . After Özil had drawn attention to himself at the beginning of the 2008/09 season with good sporting performances, the Turkish national coach Fatih Terim wanted to nominate him for the Turkish national team . Özil declined on the grounds that he wanted to concentrate on the German U-21 national team and the upcoming U-21 European Championship . However, he was still courted by Terim. For a long time it was unclear what happened to his application for Turkish expatriation. After Özil had finally decided to play for Germany in the future, he played his first international match for the senior national team in the 0-1 home defeat against Norway on February 11, 2009 in Düsseldorf .

His greatest international success to date was winning the U-21 European Championship in Sweden in 2009 under national coach Horst Hrubesch . As a playmaker in the final, he played a key role in the German team's 4-0 success against England . Özil prepared two goals and scored the 2-0 himself. He was subsequently voted “Man of the Match” (best player of the game).

After his A-compulsory international debut for Germany in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup on August 12, 2009 in Baku against Azerbaijan , Mesut Özil was finally only eligible to play for Germany . On September 5, 2009, he scored his first goal for the German national team in the friendly against South Africa . On October 9, 2009, he paved the way for the German team to the 2010 World Cup when he prepared Miroslav Klose 's goal for the 1-0 final against Russia .

At the beginning of June 2010, national coach Joachim Löw appointed him to the squad for the tournament in South Africa , where he scored the decisive goal for the German team's victory in the preliminary round in the game against Ghana on June 23, 2010 and then to the Man of the Match (best player of the game) was chosen. After a good tournament performance, the Germans achieved third place. Özil played all seven games at the World Cup and was nominated as one of ten players for the Golden Ball as the best player of the tournament; the title ultimately went to Diego Forlán .

Özil played 16 of 17 international matches in the 2009/10 season, making him more than any other player on the pitch this season. He was only missing from the game against Malta on May 13, 2010, as he played with Werder in the cup final two days later .

The following year, he played nine of the ten qualifying games for the 2012 European Championship , all of which were won. He gave seven assists and scored five goals. At the European Championship he was in the starting line-up in the attacking midfield in all five games. In the first game on June 9, 2012 in the 1-0 victory over Portugal and in the quarter-final victory against Greece on June 22, he was elected Player of the Match . In this game he prepared three goals. In the semi-final defeat against Italy , Özil converted the penalty to make it 1: 2 in stoppage time.

On the first day of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup , Özil scored two goals in a 3-0 win over Faroe Islands and converted a penalty on the second day in a 2-1 win over Austria . Özil scored a total of six goals in qualifying for the 2014 World Cup.

He was also appointed to the national team at the 2014 World Cup , which ended with winning the title. He was in the starting line-up in all seven games. In the round of 16 against Algeria , he scored the decisive 2-0 in the 119th minute.

Özil was a regular player in both the qualification for the European Championship 2016 and the European Championship in France and played all tournament games for the full season. In the first game against Ukraine, he provided the template for Bastian Schweinsteiger's 2-0 win . He missed a penalty against Slovakia, and in the quarter-finals against Italy he first gave the German team a 1-0 lead. After equalizing the Italians and overtime, he again missed the point on penalties. Nevertheless, the team progressed and then eliminated in the semi-finals against hosts France.

At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where Germany was eliminated for the first time at a World Cup after the preliminary round, Özil played the full distance in the first game (0: 1 against Mexico ) and in the third game (0: 2 against South Korea ) . In the 2-1 win against Sweden he was not taken into account. His performance against South Korea was sometimes criticized as phlegmatic , discouraged and timid, while other media at Özil found the best statistics among the German players in this game. Özil was the player who worked out the most scoring chances of all players at the World Cup (5.5 chances on average). After the national team left the World Cup, some media saw Özil as a “symbol of failure”, while other media saw the exaggerated concentration and focus on Özil's person and - in their opinion - stylization of Özil as a “ scapegoat ” on the part of the DFB and criticized many football fans . On July 22, 2018, he announced his immediate resignation from the German national team.

additional

Özil has been supporting the charitable organization BigShoe for several years and is responsible for the costs of operations for children in developing regions .

In addition to Manuel Neuer , he is the only active German footballer to be seen in the Madame Tussauds cabinet in Berlin as a lifelike wax figure. Together with René Adler , Özil was already seen as the title character on the German cover of the game FIFA 11 .

The decision to play for German national teams sometimes caused incomprehension and sometimes open criticism from Turkish fans. Soccer professional Hamit Altıntop was quoted according to the Süddeutscher Zeitung that Özil had decided on the "business" because, as a German, he would "have more lobby, a higher market value and earn more money". In his opinion, Özil's decision has "nothing to do with integration". However, Altıntop later emphasized several times that he hadn't said anything of the kind about Özil, and referred to his long-standing friendship with Özil.

In 2012, in the hometown of Özil's parents, Devrek , a street was named after Mesut Özil in his honor.

In March 2017 Özil's book The Magic of the Game was published. And what you need to make your dreams come true at Bastei Lübbe- Verlag. In this he tells about his path to becoming a professional footballer and the characteristics with which you can achieve your goals. The book was largely received positively, for example Der Tagesspiegel judged : "[...] an astonishingly open and informative book that allows a different view of Özil, which shows him as a much more critical spirit than had previously been assumed."

Controversy

Tax fraud allegation

At the beginning of December 2016, as part of the publications of the disclosure platform Football Leaks, it became known that the Spanish tax authority had demanded an arrears tax payment of EUR 2,017,152 from Mesut Özil. He was also fined 789,963 euros. According to the information published by Football Leaks, Özil is said to have evaded taxes via offshore fake companies, Swiss accounts and straw men. This alleged tax fraud caused widespread criticism in the German public. Özil paid taxes in the required amount in February 2017. He objected to the fine . A decision by the Spanish judiciary on the fine was still pending in early 2018.

Photo with Erdoğan, resignation from the national team

In December 2011, November 2012, January 2016 and October 2017 there were meetings between Özil and the Turkish (Minister) President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan , which were largely ignored by the German public.

On May 13, 2018, Özil met Erdoğan again, this time in London together with his national team colleague İlkay Gündoğan and the Turkish international Cenk Tosun . All three players presented the president with one of their jerseys and posed with him for the media. This time, however, from May 14, there was a violent reaction in social networks and biting comments from the renowned media, which were initially directed against the two national players Özil and Gündoğan. The reason for the changed reaction was seen in particular as the close proximity of the appearance to the elections in Turkey on June 26th in connection with the start of the soccer world championship on June 14th, 2018 , for which both were set as players of the German national team . Despite assurances to the contrary by both players, the overwhelming majority of the commentators felt that the appearance was taking political sides with Erdoğan and criticized it, all the more when both players admitted to Germany in a conversation with the German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on May 19 , but failed to distance themselves from Erdoğan and the joint appearance. Since Gündoğan made statements in the following years, but Özil kept his silence, he moved into the focus of attention.

The DFB agreed with the criticism of the photo session, but made every effort to bring the discussion to an end as quickly as possible, which however failed. After the embarrassing elimination of the German eleven in the preliminary round, the DFB top under pressure suddenly began to criticize Özil more and more and even give room to thoughts that Özil was partly responsible for the unrest that his appearance in the team had caused Elimination of the national team. National team director Oliver Bierhoff said in a world interview: “We have never forced players in the German national team to do anything, but always tried to convince them for something. We didn't succeed at Mesut. And so you should have thought about doing without him. ”Bierhoff made it clear in an interview on ZDF that he felt he was misunderstood. He said that he meant that if the team had waived Özil, it would only be for sporting reasons and not because of the Erdoğan photo. Özil has been nominated and he and Jogi Löw are also there. The passage that had been misinterpreted had not caught his eye when reading the world interview.

When, almost two months after meeting Erdoğan, Özil had still not commented on his motives for the meeting, the then DFB President Grindel said in a kicker interview that Özil should comment publicly on the subject if he left the Vacation had returned. However, Özil initially failed to comment.

The DFB generally received severe criticism for dealing with the Özil / Erdoğan case, especially when Özil broke his silence on July 22, 2018 and issued a long statement on the short message service Twitter in English, in which, in addition to massive criticism of his dealings with him and allegations that the DFB had not adequately protected him against the racism expressed against him , announced that he would no longer play for the German national team, which he justified with his treatment by the DFB. In the course of this, Özil also sharply attacked the then DFB President Reinhard Grindel : “I will no longer serve as a scapegoat for [Grindel's] incompetence and his inability to do his job properly. I know that after the photo he wanted me out of the team [...] but Joachim Löw and Oliver Bierhoff stood up for me and supported me. In the eyes of Grindel and his helpers, I am German if we win and an immigrant if we lose ... ”He also said with reference to Grindel:“ People with a racially discriminatory background should no longer be part of the world's largest football association who has many players from families of different origins. ”Özil also criticized the fact that Lothar Matthäus ' meeting with the controversial Russian President Vladimir Putin during the 2018 World Cup, of which a photo comparable to that of Özil and Erdoğan was circulated, far less attention than was given to his. However, Matthew also received criticism for this meeting. In addition, Özil said that he did not want to send a political message with the photo and that he did not want to make an election recommendation, but that he wanted to "respect the highest office in the country [s] of a family."

Özil's resignation again generated a great deal of media coverage and broad public discussion. The reactions in the various stages of the roughly two-month period were often violent, but usually followed the well-known positions of the - especially political - actors and offered little new. Many of his football colleagues showed solidarity with him, but not all; There were mixed reactions from the clubs, and his sponsors also reacted differently. The greatest agreement was in the criticism of Özil's appearance with Erdoğan and the behavior of the DFB. On the other hand, opinions were largely polarized as to how far Özil's turn to Germany went and to what extent he was obliged to do so; to what extent the criticism of him was exclusively an expression of resentment hostile to migrants; whether he had lived up to his role model function as a national athlete; what the events around him meant for the integration of young migrants and the nature and assessment of his motives. Özil's behavior poses a particular dilemma for the German commentators of Turkish origin, who want to support Özil as a person with a migration background, but sharply disapprove of his proximity to Erdoğan. In a series of letters to the editor and on social media there were abuse and accusations against Özil.

The public criticism of Özil’s photo with Erdoğan also coincided with general criticism of Özil’s performance.

After his resignation from the national team, Turkish President Erdoğan stood behind Özil and called his behavior "patriotic". As a result of Özil's resignation, in the hometown of Özil's parents, Devrek in Turkey, on the initiative of the mayor, a poster showing Özil in the German national jersey from 2010 was opposed on a poster stand pointing to the local Mesut-Özil-Straße exchanged the picture with Erdoğan, which was shot in May 2018.

Before he resigned from the national team, Özil did not inform national coach Joachim Löw about his departure, which would otherwise be the norm. Even after that, Özil left any attempt to contact Joachim Löw by phone or text message unanswered, which Löw was "seriously disappointed in human terms". A meeting of Jogi Löw and Oliver Bierhoff with Özil in London did not take place either because Arsenal FC denied Löw and Bierhoff access to the training grounds. At the end of September 2018, Grindel admitted mistakes: he always said, "[t] that we should have defended Mesut more". Grindel announced that in the case of racist hostility against players in the future "to show a clear edge" and to want to "face individual players in individual cases". The integration message of the DFB must be communicated more clearly again. In an interview with the football podcast of the picture newspaper Grindelwald Ozil again criticized for its failed discussion with Joachim Loew. However, he did not want to apply pressure “at any point”, just said that he “knew it from football” and that you talk to the coach about leaving a team or changing clubs.

At the beginning of September 2018, basketball professional Enes Kanter of Turkish origin , who is critical of Erdoğan and who sympathizes with the Gülen movement, which is banned in Turkey , said that he might know why Özil took the photo: Kanter, who lives in the USA , became a member of the US because of his sympathy Gülen movement had his Turkish citizenship revoked, his father had been arrested twice in Turkey and his family's home had been robbed. He also lost his sponsor Nike because he saw his business in Turkey at risk. Mesut Özil could have suffered a similar experience and his relatives living in Turkey could have suffered disadvantages if he had refused to meet Erdoğan.

In March 2019, Özil invited the Turkish President to his wedding and asked him to be the best man at the ceremony. At his wedding, Mustafa Yıldızdoğan played “Ölürüm Türkiyem” (I die for you, my Turkey) , a hymn of the right-wing extremists.

Comments on the Uyghurs in China

On December 13, 2019, Özil described the Muslim Uyghur ethnic group in China, hundreds of thousands of whom are interned in re-education camps, as “ warriors who resist persecution ” ( warriors who resist persecution ) and criticized the People's Republic of China and Muslims around the world for their silence on this matter. On the following day, Arsenal distanced itself from the statements and described them as "Mesut's personal views". The Chinese state broadcaster CCTV canceled the Premier League game between Arsenal and Manchester City on December 15, 2019, according to Özil's statement. The Chinese Football Association said in a statement that Özil had "hurt the feelings of the Chinese people", and a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry said Özil had been deceived by "fake news" and "false statements".
