The 2019/20 season of the 3rd football league was the twelfth season of the third-highest division in German men's football . It was opened on July 19, 2019 with the game of TSV 1860 Munich against Preußen Münster and should originally have ended on May 16, 2020. From December 23, 2019 to January 24, 2020, the season was interrupted by the winter break; there was another interruption in gaming operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic . The last matchday before the mandatory break took place from March 6th to 9th, on May 30th, the game operations were resumed with the 28th matchday and before empty stands. The last game day took place late on July 4th. The promotion relegation games, originally scheduled for May 20 and 27, took place on July 7 and 11.
Changes compared to the previous season
For the clubs VfL Osnabrück , Karlsruher SC and SV Wehen Wiesbaden , which had been promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga , MSV Duisburg , 1. FC Magdeburg after its only one year adventure in the second division and FC Ingolstadt 04 after nine years of second and first class came from the second division . For the relegated to the regional leagues FC Energie Cottbus , Sportfreunde Lotte , Fortuna Köln and VfR Aalen , the superior southwest champion Waldhof Mannheim came from there after 16 years of fourth and fifth class, the Chemnitzer FC after its immediate promotion, after eight years of the regional league The amateur team of FC Bayern Munich , which prevailed against the northern champions VfL Wolfsburg II in the promotion games, as well as FC Viktoria Köln from the west , which - including its numerous predecessor clubs - is represented in national football for the first time.
The stadium landscape of the third division only changed as a result of promotions and relegations, only KFC Uerdingen now plays its home games in Düsseldorf instead of in Duisburg , as the Grotenburg stadium in Krefeld is still not considered suitable for the third division and the desired renovation is in progress the length pulls.
Season course
First round
The relegated FC Ingolstadt 04 , 1. FC Magdeburg and MSV Duisburg went into the season as favorites, with the former Bundesliga club Eintracht Braunschweig and last year's fourth Hallescher FC also counting among the promotions. While the aforementioned teams, with the exception of Magdeburg, quickly established themselves in the top group, SpVgg Unterhaching caused a surprise when they took the lead in the table for three match days. The newly promoted SV Waldhof Mannheim , who returned to professional football after 16 years, also surprised when he was able to catch up with the upper ranks before the winter break and wintered in third place in the table. From the 14th matchday onwards, Duisburg could no longer be ousted from the top position and celebrated the autumn championship after just 18 games.
The traditional clubs 1. FC Kaiserslautern , Hansa Rostock and TSV 1860 Munich rallied in a midfield that was only five points apart, as did the former second division Würzburger Kickers and KFC Uerdingen 05 . Promoted FC Viktoria Köln , on the other hand, had to accept a negative series after an initial high flight and did not win a game from mid-September.
For FC Carl Zeiss Jena , the first six games were all lost, which meant a new negative record within the league. From the 3rd day of the match, the team was beaten in last place. The negative trends of SG Sonnenhof Großaspach (19th place in the second half of the season) and Preußen Münster (18th) appeared as a logical consequence of the departure of many top performers in the run-up as well as comparatively low budgets. Two other newcomers also had a hard time until winter: FC Bayern Munich II was in 15th place ahead of Chemnitzer FC in 17th place, which had the fifth best attack (34 goals in 19 games), but also the worst defensive row with 41 Goals against. The FSV Zwickau , last year's seventh place was only three points away at number 14 out of a relegation place.
After an extraordinary meeting in Frankfurt am Main on March 11, 2020, in which representatives of the DFB , the league committee and all 20 clubs took part, it was decided to postpone the 28th and 29th matchday and thus let the game run completely for the time being. As in all other leagues, the reason for this was the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany . On March 16, the compulsory break was extended to April 30, which now also affects game days 30 to 35.
On April 3, the DFB announced extensive changes to the game rules. Among other things, a possible implementation of the seasonal operation beyond June 30, 2020 was made possible, in which case the following season would open later than the planned time or, if necessary, not take place at all. On April 23, an aid fund was decided that guaranteed every third division club except Bayern II 300,000 euros from the funds of the four German Champions League participants . On April 27, ten clubs voted to continue the season, 1. FC Kaiserslautern and SV Meppen abstained and the eight clubs MSV Duisburg, SV Waldhof Mannheim, 1. FC Magdeburg, Hallescher FC, FSV Zwickau, SC Preußen Münster, SG Sonnenhof Großaspach and FC Carl Zeiss Jena voted against, with Duisburg emphasizing that they were actually in favor of a continuation of the season. It was noticeable that the demolition advocates were clubs in the table positions one and two as well as fifteen to twenty. With the help of the "Task Force Sports Medicine / Special Game Operations", the DFB examined the guidelines ("hygiene concept") developed jointly by the DFB and DFL for the best possible medical framework conditions in accordance with the content presented by the DFL for the two national leagues. As a result, after the respective countries had issued gaming permits, it was decided on May 21st to resume gaming operations on May 30th “taking into account the political situation”. The originally announced restart date May 26th could not be kept.
Due to the short lead time and the sometimes very different training conditions and starts, on which decisions by the respective countries were based, the decision of the DFB aroused resentment among some participants. Central German clubs were particularly affected . Taking into account that only a small majority of the participants had spoken out in advance for a continuation of the season, some of them considered taking legal action against the umbrella organization or having their games that had already been scheduled postponed. Parallel to the two national leagues, the DFB also increased the substitution quota per team for the third division from three to five players by the end of the season.
Second half
Duisburg also defended first place in the table after the break after the 27th matchday, until it was lost to the best second round team, Bayern Munich II, on the 33rd matchday. As a result, the zebras slipped out of the promotion zone and were ultimately only able to qualify for the DFB Cup 2020/21 in fifth . Braunschweig, on the other hand, was back in the fight for the top places after a low at the beginning of the return series and was safely promoted after the 37th matchday. Würzburg and Ingolstadt were able to benefit from weak periods of the MSV and Mannheim and catch up. Unterhaching did not win a game from the 29th match day and was eliminated from the promotion battle, whereas Rostock and 1860 Munich could make promotion hopes in the end of the season. The Kickers even overtook fellow promoted Braunschweig on the last day of the match and became runner-up behind the second representative of FC Bayern, which was the first second team to win the third division title.
The Hallesche FC won none of the 13 league games from the 18th to the 30th matchday and fell from 5th place to a relegation place, but secured the class early after the second coach change of the season.
Carl Zeiss Jena, the bottom of the table for long stretches of the season, was the first to be relegated to the regional league after the 32nd matchday. SG Sonnenhof Großaspach , which had been part of the league for six years, followed three laps before the end . With two game days before the end, apart from Münster, only clubs from the NOFV were relegated. After the 37th matchday, the relegation of Preußen Münster was sealed, in the season finale a decision was finally made in the long-distance duel between Zwickau and Chemnitz. The FSV retained the upper hand due to the goal difference being 1 better, which was comparable to the situation of Braunschweig and Energie Cottbus in the previous season.
