In the 1985/86 season , the second team from Berlin FC Dynamo won the season A. Since second teams were not eligible for promotion, the runner-up BSG Energie Cottbus rose to the GDR league . From season B, the BSG Progress Bischofswerda was an absolute newcomer to the House of Lords.

Promotion round to the GDR league
Six teams from the 15 district leagues are promoted to the GDR league . In three groups of five teams each, the 15 district champions or clubs eligible for promotion determined the promoters. The first two in each group will be promoted. Each team played two home games and two away games in their group.
