1st main round
The draw for the first main round took place on June 15, 2013 as part of the sports show . The 64 teams were divided into two lottery pots with 32 teams each according to the DFB Cup regulations . In one pot were the lower-class teams that
- had qualified for the DFB-Pokal through the regional associations (25),
- had occupied the last places in the 2nd Bundesliga in the 2012/13 season (3 of 4; Dynamo Dresden was excluded),
- had occupied the first four places in the 3rd division in the 2012/13 season (4).
Each of these 32 teams was drawn to a team from the other lottery pool, which included all 18 teams from the 1st Bundesliga and the 14 highest-placed teams from the 2nd Bundesliga from the 2012/13 season. The home right belonged to the teams of the first named pot. A special feature was the MSV Duisburg , who shared a ball with FC Erzgebirge Aue in every lottery pot, as at the time of the draw no decision had yet been made about the league membership of MSV Duisburg.
Former German national player Nia Künzer played the following matches between August 2nd and 5th, 2013 under the supervision of DFB President Wolfgang Niersbach (the league level in which the club is playing is given in brackets):
