Hernández is a patronymic educated Spanish surname meaning "son of Hernán". It occurs very often in Spanish-speaking countries and, with more than eight million namesake, is the seventh most common family name in the world, ahead of Smith (4 million, 8th place), Smirnow (2.5 million, 9th place) and Müller (1 million , Place 10). The name is particularly common in Mexico , where it tops the list of the most common surnames with more than 3.5 million father names and 2.6 million mother names (before García with more than 2.5 million father names). In the United States , the name is the 11th most common family name and the third most popular Hispanic surname with more than a million carriers, approximately 95% of whom identify as Hispanics . The name can also be found in foreign-language, simplified or historical orthography in the spelling Hernandez without acute . The Portuguese form of the name is Hernandes .
