Maizières-lès-Metz ( Lorraine Welschmaacher ; German also Macheren ) is a French commune with 11,388 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region ( Lorraine until 2015 ). The inhabitants call themselves Maiziérois .

The municipality of Maizières-lès-Metz is located in the Moselle valley , twelve kilometers north of Metz . The A4 and A31 motorways intersect in the southeast of the municipality .

Macheren at the beginning of the 20th century

history

The place was first mentioned in 977 as Maidera , in 1218 as Masieres . In 1558 the place was occupied by the French and ceded to France in 1648. From 1871 to 1918 the place belonged again to the German Empire as Maizières near Metz . From 1915 to 1918 he carried the Germanized name Macheren , 1940 to 1944 Machern bei Metz . In 1944 there was some war damage.

The family name de Maizière comes from this place.

Walygator Parc is located in the north of the municipality .

There is an outpost base of the " Ligne Maginot aquatique " at Maizières-lès-Metz. This is open to tourists and is located on the "Route de la Ligne Maginot aquatique". At Barst, private individuals and the municipality have created a fortress park that offers an insight into this part of the Maginot Line. A permanently installed Renault FT tank is the starting point of a trench system, the end of which was secured by an artillery casemate for a 75 mm gun.
