Sarntal ( Italian : Sarentino ) is an Italian municipality with 7,160 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) north of Bolzano in South Tyrol . It takes up a large part of the Sarntal through which the Talfer flows, as well as several side valleys and the surrounding mountain areas. Sarntal is the largest municipality in South Tyrol in terms of area and comprises a total of 28 fractions . The main town is Sarnthein .
geography
With an area of 302.5 km², the municipality of Sarntal is the largest in South Tyrol. It encompasses the majority of the Sarntal , which is drained by the Talfer and is also called the Penser Valley in its upper section. Of the Sarntal, which runs roughly in a north-south direction, only the lowest section, the Sarner Gorge, lies outside of the municipality. The municipality also includes several side valleys, of which the Durnholz Valley is the longest, and extensive mountain areas of the Sarntal Alps . The villages, hamlets , scattered settlements and farmsteads of the municipality are spread over 28 fractions . The main town and by far the largest village is Sarnthein at an altitude of 970 m . More important settlements following the Sarntal further up the valley are Nordheim ( 1000 m ), Astfeld ( 1020 m ), Aberstückl ( 1320 m ), Weißenbach ( 1330 m ) and Pens ( 1430 m ). In the Durnholzer Tal branching off towards the north-east near Astfeld, the villages of Reinswald ( 1500 m ) and Durnholz ( 1560 m ) should be mentioned.
The Sarntal and its side valleys are enclosed in the west, north and east by peaks of the Sarntal Alps. The Sarner Westkamm and Sarner Ostkamm, which at the same time largely form the municipality boundary, meet in the north at the Penser Joch ( 2211 m ). The highest peak in the municipality rises in the west ridge, the Hirzer ( 2781 m ); other important peaks there are the Alplerspitze ( 2748 m ), the Hochwart ( 2747 m ), the Penser Weißhorn ( 2705 m ) and the Verdinser Plattenspitze ( 2680 m ). In the east ridge the Jakobsspitze ( 2742 m ) and the Tagewaldhorn ( 2708 m ) are the highest points. At the Hörtlanerspitze ( 2660 m ), the Sarner Mittelkamm, which slides between the upper Sarntal and the Durnholzer Tal, loosens. The southernmost significant summit of the east ridge in the municipality is the Sarner Scharte ( 2509 m ), which dominates the valley view of Sarnthein.

Economy and Infrastructure
The Sarntal is strongly rural. Livestock farming predominates, mostly on mountain farms under often very difficult geographical conditions. In addition to the traditional South Tyrolean gray cattle (a breed of cattle) , farmers often also own horses of the traditional South Tyrolean Haflinger breed . Many smallholders only run the farm as a sideline and have other work during the day.
Skilled trades are another economic mainstay of the Sarntal.
A few years ago a district heating plant was built in the craft zone of the main town of Sarnthein, which is run as a cooperative by the local farmers and some consumers. Here, only wood from the valley that cannot be used for the wood industry is efficiently burned. In the Reinswald fraction there is a ski area that has been modernized and slightly expanded in recent years.
The community is opened up for motor traffic by the state road 508, which crosses the Sarntal valley lengthways. The main driveway, which is well developed through many tunnels, comes from the south from the South Tyrolean provincial capital Bozen . In the north, the state road overcomes the Penser Joch and thus creates a connection to the Wipptal , which is closed for several months in the winter due to the risk of avalanches.

Regular events
The Sarner Alpenadvent takes place every Advent weekend . There, the Sarner producers present their goods or you can enjoy a hot cup of mulled wine with contemplative music and a campfire. A fairy tale search for children is also organized. The Klöckeln is celebrated every Thursday evening in Advent, the so-called Klöckelnächten. The Sarner men and boys in old, worn out costumes and under a self-made mask (Lårf) made of natural products such as treebeard in groups (Kutt, pl: Kuttn) to drive away the evil spirits and prepare the way for Jesus at Christmas .
