Mairie of Amnéville

Amnéville ( German Amenweiler , 1902-1919 and 1940-1944 Stahlheim , Lorraine Stolem ) is a French commune with 10,416 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (before 2016 Lorraine ). The inhabitants call themselves Amnévillois .

geography

The municipality of Amnéville is located about 15 kilometers south of Thionville on the German side of the former Franco-German language border , which ran just a few kilometers to the west, in the Orne Valley . The district of Malancourt La Montagne ( Malandshofen ) is ten kilometers west of the village.

history

The place was first mentioned in 1075 as Amerellivilla , belonged to the Duchy of Lorraine until 1766 and then to France. However, towards the end of the 19th century, the village had only sunk to a part of the small community of Gandrange .

The booming steel industry then practically led to a re-establishment of the place, the Rombacher Hüttenwerke built a workers' settlement on the site in 1900 , which became an independent community on June 15, 1902 under the name Stahlheim . After the area returned to France, the new municipal administration decided in January 1919 to call the place Amnéville again .
