- January 1: Merging of the existing 21 into five social insurance carriers. The nine regional health insurance funds are merged to form the Austrian Health Insurance Fund , the Public Employees Insurance Company (BVA) and the Insurance Company for Railways and Mining (VAEB) to become the Insurance Company for Public Employees, Railways and Mining (BVAEB), the Farmers Social Insurance Institution (SVB) and the Commercial Social Insurance Agency Economy (SVA) to the social insurance institution for the self-employed (SVS).
- 7 January: Barbara Stelzl-Marx is named Austrian Scientist of the Year 2019 by the Club of Education and Science Journalists .

- February 25: First COVID-19 diseases in Austria
- June 4: As part of the protests that started in the United States and in other countries following the death of George Floyd , Black Lives Matter Vienna takes place against racism and police violence, with around 50,000 participants the largest demonstration in Vienna for years.
- June 17: The mathematician Adrian Constantin is awarded the 2020 Wittgenstein Prize .

- 7 January: After the formation of a government in Austria in 2019 , the inauguration of the Federal Government Short II by Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen takes place.
- 22 January: Establishment of a parliamentary committee of inquiry into the alleged buyability of the turquoise-blue federal government ( Ibiza committee of inquiry )
- 29 January: Removal and renewed appointment with swearing in of those members of the Federal Government Short II , as well as the State Secretary whose departments or responsibilities have changed due to the 2020 amendment to the Federal Ministries Act.
- February 17: After the state elections in Burgenland 2020 , the constituent meeting of the XXII. Legislative period with the election and inauguration of the state government Doskozil II .
