- April 10: The Financial Market Authority (FMA) orders a haircut for Heta Asset Resolution , the wind-down unit of the former Carinthian Hypo Alpe-Adria. Senior creditors have to forego 53.98 percent of their claims, while subordinate creditors have to forego all of their money.

- January 1st: Austria takes over the presidency of the Central European Defense Cooperation
- 11 January: The parliamentary Hypo investigation committee continues its work.
- January 15: Following the announcement of the candidacy of Social Affairs Minister Rudolf Hundstorfer in the federal presidential election in Austria in 2016, the SPÖ decides to reorganize the federal government of Faymann II . Alois Stöger becomes Minister of Social Affairs, Gerald Klug becomes Minister of Infrastructure , and Hans Peter Doskozil becomes Minister of Defense . The inauguration took place on January 26th.
- January 16: After the International Atomic Energy Agency IAEA, the return of the Iranian nuclear program confirmed and the obligations under the agreed in July 2015 in Vienna nuclear deal are met, after further discussions in Vienna's Palais Coburg the years of economic and financial sanctions against Iran by the European Union and the United States repealed.
- January 20: The government announces a cap on the number of refugees . In 2016, 37,500 asylum seekers are to be admitted, by 2019 there should be a maximum of 127,500.
- 27 January: The governing parties SPÖ and ÖVP pass the Police State Protection Act in parliament with a simple majority .
- February 24th: Western Balkans Conference in Vienna
- March 1: Member of the National Council, Marcus Franz, leaves the ÖVP parliamentary club
- March 31 and April 1: Conference of the Defense Ministers of the Central European Defense Cooperation member states as well as Poland, Serbia, Macedonia and Montenegro in Vienna. The central issue is the refugee crisis .
- April 10: The ÖVP board decides to reshuffle the government: Interior Minister Johanna Mikl-Leitner moves to Lower Austria as Deputy Governor , Finance Minister Wolfgang Sobotka takes over the interior department. Sobotka was sworn in as Minister of the Interior on April 21, 2016.
- April 27: The National Council approves an amendment to the Asylum Act 2005
- April 28: Ban Ki-moon gives the first speech after the right to speak for outstanding personalities as well as for members of the European Parliament in the plenary session of the National Council
- May 9: Federal Chancellor and SPÖ leader Werner Faymann announces his resignation
- MAY 11: The Austrian State Governors' Conference and Minister of Defense Hans Peter Doskozil decide a halt to the army reform. In mid-June, Doskozil presented details of the 2016 army reform
- May 16 and 17: In Vienna, top politicians from over 20 countries discuss approaches to resolving the conflicts in Nagorno-Karabakh , Syria and Libya
- May 17: Christian Kern is sworn in as Federal Chancellor of the Federal Government of Kern
- May 18: Inauguration of Education Minister Sonja Hammerschmid , Chancellery Minister Thomas Drozda , Infrastructure Minister Jörg Leichtfried and State Secretary Muna Duzdar
- June 9: The main committee of the National Council nominates the ÖVP candidate Margit Kraker as President of the Court of Auditors
- July 1: The Constitutional Court completely revokes the runoff election for the federal presidential election in Austria 2016 , the election must be repeated throughout Austria
- July 8: The term of office of Federal President Heinz Fischer ends.
- September 21: The National Council decides to postpone the repeat of the Federal President's runoff election to December 4. Originally this should have taken place on October 2nd. It was also decided to update the electoral roll, the prerequisite for the right to vote is now that the person turns 16 on election day.
- 10/11 October: The chairman of the public service union (GÖD), Fritz Neugebauer , declares his resignation after 19 years in office. Norbert Schnedl is elected as his successor and thus the seventh GÖD chairman in the Second Republic .
- October 29th: Congress of Defenders of Europe in Linz
- November 9: The National Council decides to introduce a central register of voters. In future, it should be possible to electronically support referendums using the citizen card or the mobile phone signature .
