The Austrian Football Championship 1957/58 was organized by the Austrian State Football League Association. The also professionally run State League B served as the substructure for State League A , but only clubs from Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland, Upper Austria and Styria played. The Tauern League North (Salzburg), the Tauern League South (Carinthia) and the Arlbergliga (Tyrol, Vorarlberg) were organized on an amateur basis for clubs from western Austria, where there was not yet a professional operation. The respective state leagues of the federal state associations acted as the third performance level.

First level - State League A

General

The 1957/58 championship saw a superior winner with the Wiener Sport-Club, the Dornbachers took over the championship lead on matchday 5 and did not give it up until the last round. Only one game against defending champion Rapid was lost (2-4 home defeat on November 30, 1957). The latter, however, kept his theoretical chance of winning the championship until the last matchday (May 10, 1958). In the direct duel on the overcrowded Pfarrwiese a 5: 0 had to be made, but the game ended 2: 2 (so it was irrelevant that Ernst Happel with a penalty that would have brought Rapids a 3: 2 victory to goalkeeper Rudolf Szanwald failed (source: "Arbeiterzeitung Wien" from May 11, 1958, page 28)). It was the sports club's second championship win after 1923, and the Horak-Knoll-Hof-Hamerl-Skerlan storm series was particularly convincing. In the European Cup of national champions in 1959 it looked after an away 1: 3 against Juventus Turin after an early elimination for the sports club, but the second leg could be won sensationally 7: 0 on October 1, 1958. Via Dukla Prague, the club finally reached the quarter-finals, where it only ended against series winners Real Madrid. Meanwhile, SK Sturm Graz and the newly promoted FC Wien had to enter the B-League as relegated teams.

The championship experienced several interruptions in autumn, so there were between the 5th round (September 7th / 8th) and the 6th round (October 5th / 6th) because of the international matches against Yugoslavia and including the preparation for the World Cup -Qualification match against Luxembourg a three-week break - and another on October 13th because of the international match against Czechoslovakia; In addition, three more matches were canceled in the 6th round

There was a remarkable game on March 8, 1958, when the two local rivals Rapid and Wacker separated 5: 5 in the Prater Stadium in Vienna, where Wacker had already led 4: 2 and 5: 3 at the break. The decision about the game on March 2, 1958 on the Hohe Warte in Vienna near Vienna against Sturm Graz also developed curiously: In the 65th minute (score 3: 0 for Vienna) there was an interruption due to snowfall. While the guests testified that Referee Schnaubelt had "broken off", the latter claimed that he had only "broken off to let the lines follow suit. When he wanted to whistle again after 20 minutes, the storm had stopped coming «. Thereupon the »Struma« (criminal and registration committee) of the State League imposed a fine of 500 schillings on the Grazer on March 12 for unauthorized assignment, and also relieved their section head Pumich for two months of his functions. In the end there was a replay on April 23 (apparently the referee's statements were unclear), which the Döblingern won 7: 1 and the Graz team escaped a double-digit defeat.

    Relegation

Relegation to the State League A

The two promotion places in the 1957/58 season were awarded on the one hand to the champions of the B-League, the second played off in a relegation round. The Arlberg champion Lustenau 07 first played against the Tauernliga-Nord-Meister SV Austria Salzburg to qualify for the relegation games for the state league A. The SV Austria Salzburg was allowed to compete because they had defeated the Tauernliga-Süd-Meister WSG Radenthein before. Salzburg were able to clearly prevail against Lustenauer, but were defeated in the decider for promotion to the State League A to the second placed in the B-League, WSV Donawitz, with 3: 7.
