The three- cushion world cup 1996/3 was the third UMB world cup tournament in the eleventh year of the three- cushion world cup. The tournament took place from 15 to 19 May 1996 in this discipline of carom billiards in Hooglede . It was the twelfth three-cushion World Cup tournament in Belgium.
history
The Belgian Ludo Dielis , who no longer competes in the BWA professionals , was able to secure the title at his first UMB World Cup tournament. That it is not easy to win in the UMB World Cup was already evident for Dielis in the first round. Against the rather unknown Dutchman Martin van Leeuwen he was already 0-2 behind. Thanks to his great routine as a two-time world champion, he could still decide the match for himself. After two relatively safe victories, he went to the semi-finals against his compatriot Peter de Backer. Here, too, Dielis was behind with 0: 2 sets. In the fifth set he decided the match in his favor with 15:14 in ten shots. The excitement of the final was hard to beat. Daniel Sánchez had match point in the fourth set. But he couldn't use it and so Dielis won the fourth set with 15:14 and the fifth set 15:12.
The Belgians made a very strong impression at this tournament. There were three Belgians on the podium at the award ceremony and a Spaniard with Sanchez. Of the eight German starters, only Johann Schirmbrand and Rainer Neff were able to qualify for the finals. With seventh place, Schirmbrand achieved his best World Cup result.
The exact price money could not be determined from the documents.
Tournament mode
In the qualifying round in groups, two sets of 15 points each are played in round robin mode. The group winners qualify for the 1/16 finals. There are also 14 seeded players. From the main competition (1/16 final), all games are played on three sets of 15 points each. Third place has not been played since the 1996/97 season. This means that there is no game for third place and there are two third-placed players.
Since Rini van Bracht and Richard Bitalis did not appear, the two best runners-up Nikos Polychronopoulos and Johan Claessen moved up into the main field.
In the event of a tie, the following order will be applied:
- MP = match points
- SV = rate ratio
- GD = general average
- HS = maximum series
