The EHC München (formerly HC Munich 98) is an association founded on 19 January 1998 ice hockey club from Munich .

In May 2004 the first men's team of the EHC Munich was outsourced to the EHC Munich Spielbetriebs GmbH . She has been playing in the German Ice Hockey League since the 2010/11 season . After the 2011/12 season it was renamed EHC Red Bull Munich and its GmbH was renamed EHC Red Bull Munich GmbH . In the 2015/16 season, the team won the German championship for the first time , which it won again in 2016/17 and 2017/18. The team plays their home games in the ice rink in the Munich Olympic Park .

The most successful year before the DEL membership was the 2009/10 season , in which the team won both the DEB Cup and the championship in the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga and was promoted to the DEL. Further successes were the runner-up in the 2008/09 season and promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga in the 2004/05 season . The official club colors were white and blue, since May 1, 2013 they have been white, blue and red.

From foundation to promotion to the Bavarian League (1998–2000)

On January 19, 1998, former DEL players founded the EHC Munich under the name Ice Hockey Club HC 98. Originally, Franz Jüttner , Patrick Lange, Sebastian Schwele , Moritz Geiselbrechtinger, Leos Andrysek, Maximilian Schindler were looking for the opportunity to rent Eiszeit in Munich to continue to pursue her sport after her career has ended. With the support of Angela Pertschy, a first team was then registered for play. The chosen name HC 98 and the corresponding coat of arms was created with the cooperation of the founding members and was a mixture of a reference to the EHC 70 Munich and the idea of ​​orienting oneself on Swiss ice hockey, as those responsible opted for a simple HC in the name, which for example HC Davos has in its name.

HC 98 played its first competitive game on October 25, 1998 against the second team of ESC Dorfen , which HC won 12-0. In the further course of the season, the Munich team finished the preliminary round of the district league with 24: 0 points and 159: 22 goals in first place in the table, whereby the game against EC Geisenhausen ended with 27: 1 and thus meant the highest victory in the club's history.

In the championship round, HC 98 won the first tie in the club's history in the first leg against SV Apfeldorf , prevailed in the second leg and thus advanced to the final of the Bavarian regional league championship, which the club won against EV Pfronten 1b . By winning the championship, HC 98 qualified for the national league.

The national league season 1999/00 began for HC 98 with two wins, before the promoted team lost a competitive game for the first time in club history on November 7, 1999 when ESV Gebensbach beat the HC 98 team 3: 5. The rest of the preliminary round was successfully designed so that at the end of the main round the team took second place in the table behind the EHC Waldkraiburg . In the subsequent promotion round, the Munich team left ERC Sonthofen behind them in the end due to the direct comparison and thus rose to the Bayern League .

For the first Bayern League season in 2000/01, the city of Munich had the Prinzregentenstadion completely renovated. Since the Olympic ice sports center could not be financed, all home games were played in the Grafinger ice stadium, the home ground of the EHC Klostersee .

The preliminary round finished the EHC Munich behind the ERC Sonthofen in fifth place in the table, which narrowly missed qualification for the championship round. In the subsequent round of relegation, the ice hockey club only lost to EV Pfronten and placed second, which also meant relegation. Also in the 2001/02 season, the club was forced to switch to the Grafinger ice rink. By relocating the home games to Grafing, the average attendance fell and the second Bayern League season was played to an end thanks to loans from private sponsors and the board of directors.

From a sporting point of view, reaching the championship round was given as a goal, which was not achieved after a season start with two wins in the first eight games. In the preliminary round, HC 98 only won two home games. In contrast, the team won all seven home games in the relegation round and thus prevented relegation.

After the Munich Barons and their DEL license had moved to Hamburg, the HC 98 faced a change and a new beginning. HC Munich 98 was renamed EHC Munich and for the first time in the club's history an administrative advisory board was set up to support the board in financial matters. In addition, the games were now held in the Olympic Ice Sports Center. It was also decided to create a new logo, this logo should represent a connection of the past Munich clubs, and so the edge of the logo with the snowflakes and the writing was based on the EC Hedos , the middle part of the logo originated from the logo of the Barons . In terms of sport, things went better this season than in previous years and the Munich ice hockey club finished the preliminary round behind ESV Königsbrunn in second place. In the second round, Bayern met the four best-placed teams in the eastern group of the Bayernliga. The play-offs reached the EHC after several wins at the end of this round.

In the first round of the play-offs, the EHC Munich prevailed against the EHC Waldkraiburg, before the Starbulls Rosenheim were determined as opponents in the semifinals , who were also defeated. Having won the final against EV Landsberg 2000 in a best-of-three series the team succeeded on the third attempt the ascent to the league . To enable a more professional environment for the league, the entire board of the EHC Munich resigned after the season. The first game that EHC Munich played in the 2003/04 season was played in the Grafinger ice rink against EHC Klostersee. After the preliminary round of the Oberliga Südwest, EHC Munich came second behind Mosquitoes Essen .

In the championship round, in which the five best-placed teams of the two upper division groups played the eight play-off places in a single round with a return game, home rights in the play-off quarter-finals were secured by reaching fourth place in the table. There the EHC Munich met the Dresdner Eislöwen , which the club from Munich defeated with 2-1 wins and moved into the next play-off round. In the semifinals, the EHC Munich lost with two defeats against relegated second division REV Bremerhaven . Reaching the semi-finals was the greatest success in the club's history to date, which also enabled participation in the German Ice Hockey Cup .

With the withdrawal of EC Bad Nauheim Spielbetriebs GmbH from the 2nd Bundesliga, EHC Munich would have been the first to move into the 2nd Bundesliga, which the club waived in consideration of the difficult past of Munich ice hockey and thus enabled the Lausitzer Füchsen to rise later.

In May 2004, the EHC Munich professional team was outsourced to the newly founded EHC Munich Spielbetriebs GmbH. At the first appearance in the club's history in the DEB Cup, Munich lost in the first round against the eventual German champions Eisbären Berlin with 1: 2. In the Oberliga things were more successful in terms of sport, so that after the preliminary round of the two-part Oberliga, the team placed second behind the Heilbronner Falken , who had been relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga .

After the coach Georg Kink was dismissed before the first game of the main round and exchanged for Gary Prior, the club finished the main round as first in the group. In the quarter-finals, the EHC Munich team prevailed against the Starbulls Rosenheim in three games and met the Blue Lions Leipzig in the semifinals, against which the EHC also won.

Since the Blue Lions Leipzig filed for bankruptcy for MECS GmbH shortly before the start of the series, which led to insolvency proceedings, the entire series degenerated into a kind of farce. Since an insolvent club or Spielbetriebs-GmbH would have been downgraded one league, the EHC Munich was certain to be promoted before the start of the semi-final series. Since the promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga succeeded under Gary Prior, his expiring contract was extended until the end of the 2005/06 season. Relegation was given as the goal for the first season in the second-highest German division. While the team in the DEB-Pokal reached the quarter-finals after victories against the Kölner Haie and the Hamburg Freezers and was eliminated by the later DEB-Cup winner and runner-up DEG Metro Stars , the Munich team took eleventh place in the league. In the relegation round, the EHC Munich met the Mosquitos Essen, the Tölzer Löwen , the ESV Kaufbeuren , the Lausitzer Füchse and the Wolves Freiburg and finally held the class. Pat Cortina was introduced as his successor , under whose leadership the EHC Munich moved up to third place in the table in November and December. Despite these successes, reaching the playoffs was in danger again towards the end of the season when the decisive game against the Eisbären Regensburg came due to several defeats on the penultimate matchday . With a victory, the EHC ranked sixth in the table, which means that they met REV Bremerhaven in the play-off quarter-finals, which they defeated after six games. Towards the end of the 2006/07 season , the continuation of game operations in the 2nd Bundesliga was temporarily jeopardized when the main sponsor confirmed the termination of the contract at a press conference in March 2007. In good time before the submission of the first part of the license documents, it was announced on April 11, 2007 that the withdrawal of the termination was agreed between Spielbetriebs GmbH and the main sponsor and that the contract was extended to the end of the 2007/08 season. On the other hand, while the second part of the documents was being compiled, other sponsors dropped out, so that the 2007/08 gaming license was again at risk and all players were notified of the exemption on April 25, 2007. After a series of defeats and behavior in public that was damaging to the club , Bernhard Englbrecht was released from his position as a coach on October 9, 2007 and replaced by the American Doug Bradley. On January 21, 2008 he was also released from his position as a coach after the team under his leadership was not convincing. The Italian-Canadian Pat Cortina was introduced as the successor. In the end, the EHC Munich placed ninth and qualified for the 2008/09 season. The season goal was still missed. In the DEB Cup , the team was eliminated in the second round against the Augsburg Panthers .

After a third place in the preliminary round of the 2008/09 season , the Munich team moved into the subsequent play-offs until the final, in which the Bietigheim Steelers had the upper hand with 3-1 wins. Despite the defeat in the final, the second place in the 2nd Bundesliga was one of the greatest successes in the club's history. In the 2009/10 season , the EHC again advanced to the finals. Thus, the EHC was established as a sporting climber in the DEL in the 2009/10 season .

Due to incomplete application documents and the failure to provide security in due time, the EHC was refused the conclusion of a license agreement with the DEL on May 15, 2010. Only after the license examination procedure was resumed at the suggestion of the DEL arbitration court, the EHC Munich received the right to play for the DEL season 2010/11 on July 2, 2010 . Eight years after the Munich Barons, a Munich team started again in the top German division.

The first DEL season for EHC Munich started on September 3, 2010 with an away game against Adler Mannheim . This game was lost in the SAP Arena , which was filled with 9280 spectators , 4: 3 after extra time. Stéphane Julien scored the first goal for EHC Munich in the first period, the other goals were scored by Brandon Dietrich and Dylan Gyori .

On May 20, 2012, the EHC Munich announced the cooperation with the Austrian beverage manufacturer Red Bull as the main and name sponsor. During the several months of lockout in the 2012/13 NHL season , Paul Stastny and Blake Wheeler appeared as guest players.

The Austrian name sponsor announced in March 2013 that it wanted to take over EHC München Spielbetriebs GmbH from the previous owner Michael Philipps. On May 1, 2013, all shares were transferred to Red Bull GmbH and the name of Spielbetriebs-GmbH was changed to EHC Red Bull Munich GmbH . Christian Winkler remained the sporting director, Claus Gröbner had to leave the club, the management is shared by René Dimter, Rudolf Theierl and Christian Winkler.

Club records

  • EHC Munich was the first team that did not play in the DEL to win the DEB Cup.
  • EHC Munich was the first DEL promoter to qualify for the playoffs in its premiere season.
  • In the clash between the EHC Munich and the Straubing Tigers on November 21, 2010, a world record in penalty shooting was set. Both teams had to compete 21 times before the Straubing Tigers could leave the stadium as winners.
  • The first pre-playoff game against the Kölner Haie on March 16, 2011 is currently the third longest game in DEL history. The decision was made in the third 20-minute extension in favor of the Kölner Haie.

In the 1999/2000 season Tibor Miklos reached as a coach with the team promotion from the regional league to the Bavarian league . After Tibor Miklos, Holger Bock acted as coach until Josef Pollinger was hired as coach during the 2000/01 season. During the 2001/02 season, Peter Slapke was hired as a coach, who led the EHC into the third highest German ice hockey league , the Oberliga . Slapke's successor Michael Eibl fulfilled the previously stated goal of staying up, but was replaced by Georg Kink in summer 2004.

Kink reached with his team after a semi-final victory against the Blue Lions Leipzig and despite a final defeat against the Dresdner Eislöwen the athletic qualification for the 2nd Bundesliga. This right of ascent was ultimately exercised. In the first season in the 2nd Bundesliga, the American Gary Prior was signed, who was dismissed in 2006 due to the lack of sporting success. Thereupon the Italo-Canadian Pat Cortina was hired. Under his leadership, the EHC Munich team managed to reach the play-offs for the first time. There, the Munich ice hockey club prevailed in the quarter-finals against REV Bremerhaven and was eliminated in the semifinals against the Kassel Huskies . This was the greatest success in the club's history to date.

For the 2007/08 season the club management engaged the German Bernhard Englbrecht . On October 9, 2007, he was released from office and a few days later, on October 16, 2007, replaced by Doug Bradley. Bradley was ultimately unable to convince and was fired at the end of January 2008. A short time later, the management presented a new coach, Pat Cortina, who was already head coach at Bayern in the 2006/07 season . Cortina missed the given goal of qualifying for the play-offs again, but secured relegation with his team. Pat Cortina is also under contract with EHC Munich in the 2010/11 season .

Pierre Pagé looked after the team in the 2013/14 season, his successor was the American Don Jackson , who was already five times German champion with the Eisbären Berlin. He led Munich to win the title in 2016 and 2017.

So far, the Munich Ice Hockey Club has employed eleven different coaches from six nations.

Men's teams

Between 2004/05 and 2007/08, the EHC Munich maintained a second senior team in addition to its professional squad, which was last active in the Bavarian State League. After EHC Munich 1b was relegated to the Bavarian regional league in the 2007/08 season, the club's management announced the amateur team from playing. Since the 2007/08 season the EHC has been cooperating with the Munich ice hockey club Münchner EK, whose first team plays in the regional league, and together with it forms the SG Munich, which participated in the Bavarian regional league until the 2009/10 season. For the 2013/14 season, the club again reported a senior team, which was no longer reported for the 2014/15 season. In the 2015/16 season, the EHC Munich participated in SG 1. EFC Munich / EHC Munich, which competed in the district league group 2. Before the start of the 2016/17 season, the re-registered team was withdrawn.

Women ice hockey team

The women's team was active in the Bavarian State League from the 2005/06 season until it was discontinued after the 2009/10 season. In the 2010/11 season they played at Münchner EK , which took over from EHC Munich.

The school team has been playing in the DEB school league since the 2016/17 season, the youth and boys teams have been playing in the Bavarian League since the 2016/17 season. There is also a team for small and small school students and a U8 team. The junior team was dissolved after the 2012/13 season.

Venues

Prinzregentenstadion

The first two seasons in the club's history between 1998 and 2000 played the HC 98 in the Prinzregentenstadion , which opened on December 16, 1933, making it the oldest open-air ice rink in southern Germany. When the reconstruction of the Prinzregentenstadion was decided by the city of Munich and the Olympic ice sports center could not be financed, the HC 98 initially had no home ground, after which it had to move to the Grafing ice arena for two years. As a result, the average number of viewers fell and at the same time the previously planned income. EHC Munich played its home games in Grafing until the end of the 2001/2002 season.

After the Munich Barons moved to Hamburg, the Olympic Ice Sports Center with 6,256 seats (including 1,912 seats) was designated as the home stadium, where the home games of the EHC Red Bull Munich and the EHC Munich still take place today. The ice sports center was built in 1967 as the Oberwiesenfeld ice rink and has been modernized over the years. In the summer of 1970 the hall was expanded to almost 7,000 seats and a little later it was used for various boxing events. In the mid-1980s, when the ice hockey club EC Hedos Munich moved in, the capacity was reduced to 6,300. Since the 2013/2014 season, the capacity has been 6,142 spectators.

The club's audience record, set on December 30, 2008 against the Tölzer Löwen with 6012 visitors, was exceeded several times in the first DEL season 2010/2011, among other things, the stadium was sold out for the first time on November 5, 2010 with 6217 spectators against the Augsburg Panthers .

Olympia Hall

On December 30, 2011, the first game took place in the Olympic Hall, which has a capacity of 11,000. Opponents were the Augsburg panthers. The game was sold out and ended in a 5-0 win for Munich. The game, which was planned as a one-off event, generated a loss of around EUR 40,000 despite the crowd.

In the 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons , two games were played in the Olympic Hall under the name Hockey HALLEluja . On December 26th and 28th, 2015, the Augsburger Panthers and Eisbären Berlin were guests. On December 30, 2016 and January 1, 2017, the opponents were Eisbären Berlin and Kölner Haie repeatedly. The games in the 2016/17 season were sold out.

SAP Garden

On December 17, 2014, the City Council of Munich decided to launch an international tender for the construction of a new multi-functional hall for ice hockey and basketball on the site of the Olympic Park by a private investor. The 10,000-seat building is to be built on the site of the former bicycle stadium , which is now an event arena. The venue would have been the new home of the EHC Munich and, as a tenant, the basketball team of FC Bayern Munich , which are currently playing their games in the Audi Dome . However, FC Bayern Munich left the project at the beginning of 2016. In addition to the main ice surface, other ice surfaces are to be made available for popular and club sports as well as the public. Red Bull GmbH , the main sponsor of the EHC, will finance the hall . The demolition work on the bicycle stadium began in the first quarter of 2015 and should be completed by the end of 2015. The city took on the cost of the demolition of 3.8 million euros. The arena was originally supposed to be completed by 2018. At the end of 2016 and the beginning of 2017, the project was promoted by Red Bull boss Mateschitz and FC Bayern president Hoeneß. Mateschitz plans to open in 2019 as of February 2017.

Club culture

EHC Red Bull Munich has twelve official fan clubs. Some fan clubs were originally supporters of the EHC Munich parent club. The ice hockey club owes its strong growth in viewers in the 1980s to an influx of supporters of TSV 1860 Munich , who had had enough of the agonizing Bayern League years. Stefan Schneider , the stadium announcer at Oberwiesenfeld and the sixties in the Grünwalder Stadium , is the link between ice hockey and football. He also got Leo players to go to the Olympic ice rink and support the EHC. However, when FC Bayern players came into the hall, it whistled for many years.

The mascot of the Munich ice hockey club is called Aloisius . He wears a helmet with his name on it, a fan scarf and white tights under a white Red Bull Munich dress. Aloisius is not a regular at the Munich games. The mascot only appears in public once a year, when the EHC's " Hockey HALLEluja ", two guest performances in the large Olympic Hall, takes place.
