Frank Hanly
James Franklin "Frank" Hanly (born April 4, 1863 in St. Joseph , Champaign County , Illinois , † August 1, 1920 in Dennison , Ohio ) was an American politician and between 1905 and 1909 the 26th governor of the state of Indiana .
Early years and political advancement
Frank Hanly attended local schools in his home town of Illinois until 1881. In order to earn money, he then had to teach as a teacher himself in the winter months, while in the summer he worked in various fields as a temporary worker. The money he earned was used to finance a law degree, which he completed in 1889. After his admission to the bar, he opened a law firm in Williamsport, Indiana. Hanly was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1890 and 1891 he was a member of the Indiana Senate ; from 1895 to 1897 he was a member of the United States House of Representatives in Washington . In 1899 he ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the US Senate . In 1904 he entered the gubernatorial election in Indiana and prevailed with 53.5 percent of the vote against the Democrat John W. Kern .
Indiana Governor
Hanly began his four-year term on January 9, 1905. At that time, the Coliseum , a public sports stadium , was built on the state exhibition grounds . In Rockville one was tuberculosis hospital built in Clermont an industrial training school was only for girls. Hanly was a staunch supporter of Prohibition and fought against gambling , horse betting and corruption . He also took action against party friends and his own government members. Hanly introduced the forced sterilization of some prisoners in Indiana . This law was immediately repealed by his successor Thomas Riley Marshall . In 1921, the Supreme Court declared this law to be unconstitutional.
Another résumé
Even after the end of his tenure, Hanly fought for a strict alcohol ban. He traveled all over the United States and even made a visit to France to take his stand on the issue of prohibition. He joined the Prohibition Party and became its presidential candidate in 1916 . In that election, Woodrow Wilson was elected to a second term. Hanly received just 1.2% of the vote.
Frank Hanly was killed in a car accident on August 1, 1920. He was married to Eva Augusta Rachel Simmer. The couple had one child together.
