List of the largest municipalities in Germany

The list of the largest municipalities in Germany compiles the 100 of the area according to the largest German municipalities.

The three cities with the largest area in Germany are Berlin , Hamburg and Gardelegen , followed by Möckern , Zerbst / Anhalt , Wittstock / Dosse and Cologne . The largest municipality without municipal rights is Nuthe-Urstromtal . Among the 100 largest municipalities in Germany, the states of Brandenburg (29 municipalities), Saxony-Anhalt (24), Lower Saxony (15) and North Rhine-Westphalia (13) are most frequently represented. Rhineland-Palatinate , Saarland and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are not on this list. 62 parishes are located in the five new federal states . 79 municipalities (including 24 large cities ) have the status of a city , and the 21 remaining have two markets : Oberstdorf and Garmisch-Partenkirchen .

The largest municipality in terms of area in Rhineland-Palatinate is Kaiserslautern with 139.70 km², in Saarland Saarbrücken with 167.52 km² and in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Feldberger Seenlandschaft with 201.15 km².
