The continuous decline in population in the late 19th and 20th centuries is essentially due to the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture ; Added to this is the ongoing abandonment of small farms. Since the 1970s the population has increased again to over 200.
economy
The community is still largely agricultural and forestry ( chestnut ); Viticulture, which was quite important in earlier times, only plays a subordinate role. Small traders, craftsmen and service providers have settled in the village. Since the 1960s, some of the vacant houses have been rented out as holiday apartments ( gîtes ) .
history
The place name Seguonzac is first found in a document from 1122. The local parish church dates from the 12th century. Through a patent letter from Louis XIII. from 1623 the place was raised to the rank of barony .
Attractions
- The Notre-Dame de la Visitation church, built around 1100 in Romanesque style , is dedicated to the Visitation of Mary . Like many other churches in the region, it was raised during or after the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) with simple rubble stone masonry and transformed into a fortified church with an escape room. In addition, a rib-vaulted aisle was added on the north side ; the also planned rib vault in the main nave remained unfinished. The apse calotte is underpinned by ribs. The church building has been classified as a monument historique since 1926 .
- The Château de Segonzac is about 1 km west of the village. It is mentioned as early as the 13th century; However, the current state did not arise until the beginning of the 17th century. The building complex, which is grouped around a large courtyard, was recognized as a monument historique in 2000 .
- The Château de la Martinie is located approx. 500 m south of the village. Mentioned for the first time in the 13th century, however, its current state mainly stems from the renovation work of the 16th and 17th centuries. The building complex framed by four corner towers is privately owned and was classified as a monument historique in 1970 .
