In 1983, at the age of fourteen, he won the British U16 Championship, followed by two titles in the Scottish Snooker Championship in 1984 and 1985 . Eventually he became a professional player for the 1985/86 season.

Hendry quickly rose to the top of the world and was fourth in the world rankings in his fourth season. In addition, Hendry achieved numerous titles from 1986, with the 1989 Masters being able to win one of the most important tournaments of the tour for the first time. In the 1989/90 season he was finally able to reach the finals of all three Triple Crown tournaments with the UK Championship , the Masters and the World Snooker Championship , replacing Steve Davis as both the leader of the world rankings and as the dominant player. Hendry was finally able to stay at the top of the world rankings until 1998 and then fell temporarily from the top three ranks of the world rankings until he returned to first place in the world rankings for the last time in the 2006/07 season. In the following, he gradually said goodbye to the world's best until he announced the end of his professional career as part of the 2012 World Snooker Championship .

Hendry is - especially next to Steve Davis and Ronnie O'Sullivan , who has meanwhile surpassed several of the records set by Hendry - as one of the most important snooker players of all time. With seven titles in the Snooker World Championship , he is the most successful player of the so-called " Crucible era" and with six Masters and five UK Championship titles and thus a total of eighteen Triple Crown titles , he was also the leading player in this regard for years Player. He also played a total of eleven maximum breaks and around 775 century breaks . As a result, Hendry was named Member of the Order of the British Empire in 1994 and was one of the first players to join the Snooker Hall of Fame in 2011.
