The Ricoh Arena is a rugby and football stadium in the English city ​​of Coventry , United Kingdom . The rugby club Wasps RFC has owned the stadium since 2014 and plays its games here. From 2005 to 2013 and from September 2014 to mid-2019 it was also the home of the Coventry City football club . The stadium is nicknamed Fortress Ricoh ( German fortress Ricoh ). It replaced Highfield Road , which was Coventry City's home from 1899 to 2005. The stadium has 32,609 covered seats (including 552 VIP box seats and 1,000 business seats). There are 74 places available for journalists. The guest fans will find their seats in the corner of the stadium between the Jewson stand and the Lloyds Pharmacy stand .  

On May 9th, 2015 the visitor record was set in the Ricoh Arena. The Aviva Premiership game against the Leicester Tigers was watched by 32,019 spectators.

history

Construction began in January 2004 and on August 20, 2005, the stadium was inaugurated with a game between Coventry City and Queens Park Rangers (3-0). Originally, the stadium was to be equipped with a lockable roof and an extendable playing field based on the model of the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen . But after the club's relegation from the Premier League and England's unsuccessful bid for the 2006 World Cup , these plans were dropped and the planned capacity was reduced from 40,000 to around 32,000 seats.

The building cost a total of 113 million £ and needed to build 540,000 man-hours . The stadium is owned and managed by Arena Coventry Ltd. It is made up of the City of Coventry and the Alan Edward Higgs Charity Foundation , named after the English businessman Alan Edward Higgs from Coventry who died in 1979. He left his fortune for charity.

The stadium complex in the Foleshill district to the north of Coventry includes a. the 6,000 m² Jaguar Indoor Arena , the Singers Bar and Bistro , the Arena Health and Fitness Club and the De Vere Hotel as well as one of the largest casinos , the G Casino Ricoh Arena Coventry , England. Various events such as conferences, seminars, anniversaries or weddings can be held in the premises. Around 2,000 parking spaces are available around the venue. Right next to the stadium is the shopping center Arena Park Shopping Center .

The stadium is named after the camera and office system manufacturer Ricoh , who paid around 15 million euros for the naming rights for 10 years . When planning the stadium, it was assumed that the British car manufacturer Jaguar would be involved , but after financial problems the contract had to be canceled.

Following ongoing disputes over unpaid £ 1.3 million stadium rent between stadium owner Arena Coventry Ltd. and Coventry City, the club left the venue on March 23, 2013. There are plans to build their own stadium. Meanwhile, contributed Sky Blues their home games at Sixfields Stadium , home of Northampton Town in around 35 miles (about 56 km) away Northampton from.

In August 2014, the City of Coventry and the club owner of Sky Blues settled the disputes over the stadium rental. An agreement for the use of the stadium was concluded between the operating company ACL and Coventry City for two years with an option for two more years. The football club's return to the Football League One home game against FC Gillingham on September 6, 2014 is planned.

The rugby union club Wasps RFC has played its games at the stadium in Coventry since 2014 . In November 2014, the Wasps RFC acquired the stadium.

After Coventry City could not agree with the owners on a new lease, the club will play its home games for the 2019/20 season at St. Andrew's Stadium in Birmingham City .

Other use

On October 9, 2009, the U21 teams from England and Macedonia met each other. The qualifying game for the EM 2011 ended with a 6-3 victory for the English.

The arena as well as the Jaguar Indoor Arena is a venue for concerts with up to 40,000 spectators. Bryan Adams gave the first concert on September 23, 2005. Other artists and groups followed such as B. Bon Jovi on June 7, 2006, the Red Hot Chili Peppers on July 3, 2006, Rod Stewart on July 10, 2007, Oasis on July 7, 2009, Pink on June 24, 2010, or Take That in summer 2009 performed at three concerts.

The 2011 FA Women's Cup final between Arsenal LFC and Bristol Academy WFC on May 21 took place at Coventry Stadium in front of 13,885 spectators. With goals from Kim Little and Julie Fleeting 2-0 , the Arsenal LFC players won the 11th FA Women's Cup for the club.

At the 2012 Olympic Games , eight preliminary round games, a quarter-finals and the small final for the women of the Olympic football tournament were played here. The stadium was called the City of Coventry Stadium at that time for reasons of sponsorship .

The stadium is also used for rugby matches. So found u. a. Heineken Cup semi-finals held at Coventry Stadium. The arena was intended to be the venue for the 2015 Rugby Union World Cup . However, the venue was exchanged for Villa Park in Birmingham on May 2, 2013 .

From April 5 to 7, 2013 the team from Great Britain fought their way into the next round of the Europe / Africa zone of the Davis Cup 2013 against Russia 3-2 after falling 2-0 down in the attached Jaguar Indoor Arena . Over the three days, 8,394 spectators followed the five games.
