history
The origin of the place is unknown. The center of the village is the castle of the d'Estaing family. Guilaume d'Estaing was on the third crusade with King Richard the Lionheart of England . Dieudonné d'Estaing was able to save King Philip II's life in the Battle of Bouvines. For this he was allowed to use the royal lilies in his coat of arms. During the French Revolution, Charles-Hector Graf von Estaing stood up for the royal family. He was arrested and testified as a witness at the Queen's trial. He was then sentenced to death himself. The name d'Estaing was adopted by the family of former French President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing on June 17, 1922 in 1922.

Way of St. James ( Via Podiensis )
In Estaing there are, in addition to the tourist information, hotels and restaurants, several pilgrim hostels (French: Gîte d'étape ). The place also has a campsite. The Way of St. James leads from here down the Lot to Cahors , but not always directly on the river due to the narrowness of the valley.
After Livinhac-le-Haut , the D920a leads along the Lot as a road connection to Entraygues and on via the secondary roads D107, D42 and D627.
Attractions
- Church Saint-Fleuret in the 15th century
- The 15th century Château d'Estaing was the castle of the Estaing family. The family died out in the 18th century, but their title was bought by Edmond Giscard in 1922. His son Valéry Giscard d'Estaing , former French President, bought the castle together with his brother and a cousin in 2005 and is currently converting it into a conference center.
- The old bridge over the Lot with its four stone arches was built at the beginning of the 16th century in connection with the establishment of three annual market days. The initiative goes back to "Bienheureux" ( the blessed ) François d'Estaing, Bishop of Rodez , who inaugurated it in 1524. His statue has stood in the middle of the bridge since 1866. On the other side of the bridge, a large wrought-iron cross was erected in the 20th century. The bridge belongs since 1998 to the World Heritage of UNESCO " means of pilgrims in France "
