1. FC Kaiserslautern became the first in the 1990/91 season of the German Bundesliga and thus German men's championship .

Season overview

The 1990/91 season brought a big surprise. The 1. FC Kaiserslautern , in the previous year, only twelfth, claimed his third championship after 1951 and 1953rd

After 32 match days, Kaiserslautern already had four points ahead of FC Bayern Munich . The championship was to be celebrated on the 33rd matchday at home in Betzenberg , but Kaiserslautern lost to Borussia Mönchengladbach 2-3. As Bayern won 1-0 at 1. FC Nürnberg at the same time , the decision had to be made on the last day of the match. Kaiserslautern won their away game at 1. FC Köln 6-2 on June 15, 1991 and secured their first title since the introduction of the Bundesliga. Bayern's result (2-2 against Bayer 05 Uerdingen ) was irrelevant.

In the fight against relegation, Hertha BSC was beaten early. Uerdingen's relegation was certain on the penultimate game day. The battle for relegation place 16 was only decided on the last match day between Nuremberg and FC St. Pauli . Nuremberg won 1-0 at SG Wattenscheid 09 while St. Pauli lost 5-2 at Borussia Dortmund . After three relegation games against the Stuttgarter Kickers , St. Pauli finally had to leave the Bundesliga.

In April the league was rocked by an alleged betting scandal. The Nuremberg player Vlado Kasalo was arrested for one day. He was assumed to have deliberately caused an own goal in the games against Stuttgart and Karlsruhe. However, the allegations could not be proven.
