Joseph "Jo" Abbott (born January 15, 1840 in Decatur , Alabama , † February 11, 1908 in Hillsboro , Texas ) was an American politician . Between 1887 and 1897 he represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Joseph Abbott attended public schools in his home country. In 1853 he came to Freestone County , Texas with his parents . During the Civil War he served as a first lieutenant in the Confederate Army . After studying law and becoming a lawyer, he began to work in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . He was a member of the Texas House of Representatives in 1870 and 1871 . From 1879 to 1884 he served as a district judge in three Texas counties.

In the 1886 congressional election , Abbott was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Texas , where he succeeded Olin Wellborn on March 4, 1887 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1897 . In 1896 he renounced another candidacy. After his time in the US House of Representatives, Joseph Abbott practiced as a lawyer again. He died on February 11, 1908 in Hillsboro, where he was also buried.
