Wanamaker (also: New Bethel ) is a district of Indianapolis in Marion County in the United States .

Wanamaker is approximately 14 km southeast of downtown Indianapolis. The Big Run flows through the district .
history
The first settlers came to the place in 1825. The place was officially founded in 1834. In 1854 a post office was opened. Originally the place was called New Bethel and the post office was called Wanamaker . The post office was named after the American department store owner and postmaster John Wanamaker . The name of the post office later became the official place name. In the 19th century a train station for the Cincinnati, Indianapolis, St. Louis and Chicago Railway was built about 1.5 km south of Wanamaker . Wanamaker was built along historic Michigan Road . The Michigan Road was built in the 1830er- and 1840s. This road connects Michigan City with Madison via Indianapolis.
