The 1995/96 season was the first season in the German Bundesliga to be played according to the three-point rule . Borussia Dortmund became the German men's champions . The season began on August 11, 1995 and ended on May 18, 1996.
Season overview
The season was marked by the duel between FC Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund .
Borussia Dortmund won the championship with coach Ottmar Hitzfeld , who defended their championship title from the previous year. It was the first season with the award of three points per victory. Likewise, every player now had a fixed number.
Bayern started with their new coach Otto Rehhagel and several new players, including a. Jürgen Klinsmann and Andreas Herzog , with seven wins in a row. However, after losing points later, internal conflicts arose and Otto Rehhagel was dismissed after a 0-1 home defeat by Hansa Rostock through a goal by Jonathan Akpoborie . Under interim team boss Franz Beckenbauer , Bayern finished second and won the UEFA Cup.
1. FC Kaiserslautern , who were relegated from the Bundesliga for the first time in 33 years with 18 draws , as did Eintracht Frankfurt. The third relegated team was KFC Uerdingen, which was renamed Bayer 05 Uerdingen.
Between Leverkusen and Kaiserslautern, a decisive game for the relegation of one of the two opponents took place on May 18, 1996, which ended in a draw and thus favorable for Leverkusen. 1. FCK had to win and led 1-0 through a goal from Pavel Kuka until the 81st minute . Then Markus Münch equalized for Leverkusen. This equalization was also the subject of controversy, as some Lauterer complained that the ball had not been returned after an injury. Leverkusen's possession of the ball as a result led to equalization a few moments later.
A week later, Kaiserslautern won the DFB Cup 1-0 against Karlsruher SC.

useful information
- In the game between Bayern Munich and Fortuna Düsseldorf on matchday 34, Klaus Augenthaler , who was replacing Franz Beckenbauer in the coaching chair, accidentally replaced four players at halftime. After a 0-2 deficit, Munich made a 2-2 draw. Because of the insignificance of the game, Düsseldorf decided not to protest. Until the 2019/20 season, when five players per team were allowed to substitute due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the game was the only Bundesliga game with seven substitutions in the history of the Bundesliga.
- With the relegation of 1. FC Kaiserslautern , only 1. FC Köln and Hamburger SV remained in the Bundesliga without interruption. The 14th founding member was relegated.
