Before the first mountain arrival of this year's Giros was due, a breakaway group was caught up again in good time by the main field. After Carlos Sastre had driven for Ivan Basso at high speed in the twelve-kilometer final climb, Jan Ullrich , Serhij Hontschar and Paolo Savoldelli lost the connection. Damiano Cunego attacked five kilometers from the finish and Basso was the only one who could follow him. Basso countered the attack a little later and was the first to reach the summit. Cunego won the sprint for second place against José Enrique Gutiérrez . The favorites Gilberto Simoni , Danilo Di Luca and Savoldelli all lost more than a minute on Basso.

At the end of the day, Basso was allowed to slip on the maglia pink for the lead in the overall ranking and the maglia verde for the lead in the mountain ranking.

On the 127 km short stage Jurij Kriwzow and Cyrille Monnerais pulled away after five kilometers . Monnerais was overtaken after fleeing 100 kilometers. On the undulating profile that followed, Paolo Bettini made the race difficult for the sprinters. With his speed work he was hoping for a mass sprint that was as unrivaled as possible. The three-time stage winner Robbie McEwen lost touch for a short time and used too much strength to return to the main field.

In a very tight mass sprint, Tomas Vaitkus secured victory in the photo finish ahead of Paolo Bettini and Olaf Pollack .

In front of the mountains, a 15-man breakaway group seized the opportunity and pulled away from the peloton. The strongest rider in the group turned out to be Joan Horrach , who secured the day's victory from Addy Engels and Emanuele Sella .

There was a curiosity in the breakaway group on the last descent. There Manuele Mori fell , which Emanuele Sella could no longer avoid. Both got back on their bikes and continued the race before Mori fell a second time and Sella could not avoid him again. The first stages in the Alps saw a six-man breakaway group with Benoît Poilvet , Christian Knees , Olivier Bonnaire , José Julia , Marzio Bruseghin and José Serpa , who had pulled away after 87 kilometers.

On the last mountain, however, the favorites took over. Leonardo Piepoli were the only ones who could keep up with Ivan Basso . Also José Rujano continued meanwhile with the two. Basso and Piepoli together reached the last pass of the day 18 kilometers from the finish. In adverse weather conditions, Piepoli gained a lead over Basso on the descent, who did not want to endanger his Tour de France start. The behavior of Rujano, who got off his bike three kilometers before the finish and gave up the race lying in a good position, remained unexplained. At the finish, Basso was 44 seconds behind the winner of the day, Piepoli, who did not pose a threat to the overall standings. Third place went to the surprisingly strong Spaniard José Enrique Gutiérrez , 1:19 minutes behind.

In the overall standings, Basso extended his lead to 3:27 minutes on Gutiérrez, while Paolo Bettini took over the points jersey from Robbie McEwen , who gave up the race due to stomach problems.

After the two difficult arrivals on the last two stages, after about 60 kilometers, on the initiative of Marzio Bruseghin, a top group of five pulled away. He was followed by Stefan Schumacher , David López García , José Iván Gutiérrez and Charles Wegelius . The two Olympic champions Paolo Bettini and Jan Ullrich tried to catch up with the leading group, but in vain. The quintet gained a lead of around seven minutes before the Phonak team took up the chase in the peloton as they feared losing the lead in the team standings.

The outliers reached the home straight together in Gemona del Friuli , where Schumacher proved to be the strongest sprinter and secured his second stage success. Marzio Bruseghin and José Iván Gutiérrez followed on the other places. The peloton crossed the finish line 2:43 minutes behind.

Paolo Bettini took back the jersey of Ivan Basso's best points.

On the stage peppered with two legendary passes, Danilo Di Luca attacked at the foot of Forcella Staulanza, the first mountain of the day when there were still more than 150 kilometers to be covered. With him another 19 drivers broke up, including Paolo Bettini , Bobby Julich , Jens Voigt , Tadej Valjavec , Iván Parra , Francisco Vila and Juan Manuel Gárate . They got a lead of up to seven minutes. On the way to the final ascent, the Passo di San Pellegrino , the size of the group decreased. So twelve drivers stayed together at Passo Pordoi.

The remaining riders in the leading group reached the 18-kilometer climb to San Pellegrino with a lead of five and a half minutes on the main field. Valjavec was the first to attack. After Voigt followed him, it took a while for the rest of the drivers to catch up again. Then Gárate attacked and Voigt was able to follow again. Together they reached the top of the pass, where Voigt Gárate patted Gárate on the shoulder 300 meters from the finish line and let him win without a fight. Voigt crossed the finish line four seconds behind the Spanish champions, while Francisco Vila came in third, 1:21 minutes behind. Ivan Basso crossed the finish line with Gilberto Simoni and increased his lead over José Enrique Gutiérrez .

Fortunato Baliani secured the Maglia Verde because, as part of the leading group, he was the first to cross the first three passes and thus overtook Basso in the ranking.
