List of dinosaur movies

The list of dinosaur movies lists the major dinosaur movies . All films are listed chronologically to show the historical development. Films have been made that "show one or more specimens of extinct reptiles" . Dinosaur-like representations were included when the filmmakers wanted to show real or fictional dinosaurs. Films about other extinct animals or mythological creatures were not included. Documentaries, TV series and cartoons are listed separately below.

Documentation

Even more than the feature films, the documentaries reflect the development of trick technology in connection with the scientific findings of paleontological research. Initially, however, the media that shaped ideas about the appearance of dinosaurs were visual reconstructions by painters and sculptors.

  • Dinosaurs / Dinosaur! (USA 1991) From 8 to 11 September, 1991 was this documentary, presented by Walter Cronkite , first broadcast in four episodes: The Story of the tooth / The Tale of a Tooth , The Story of the bone / The Tale of a Bone , The Story of the egg / The Tale of an Egg , The story of the spring / The Tale of a Feather .
  • The Dinosaurs! (USA 1991, directors: Trudi Brown , Kathi White ) Documentary produced by PBS with lots of animation in four parts: The Death of the Dinosaur / The Nature of the Beas / Monsters Emerge / Flesh on the Bones.
  • When dinosaurs ruled the earth / When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth (USA 1999). A documentary series from the Discovery Channel . Episodes: Forgotten Eldorado , The Real Jurassic Park , Dino Revolution in Africa , Global Dictatorship , Conquest of Europe .
  • Dinosaurier - Im Reich der Gianten / Walking with Dinosaurs (GB 1999). This six-part BBC series is the most successful documentary about dinosaurs to date. With numerous follow-up productions and offshoots as well as a traveling exhibition of the same name , it still influences the image of dinosaurs today.

TV Shows

  • Urmel aus dem Eis (Germany 1969, directed by Harald Schäfer ). The story based on the book by Max Kruse was filmed in 1969 as a puppet show by the Augsburger Puppenkiste in four episodes by Hessischer Rundfunk . The Urmel, a speaking “link between dinosaurs and mammals”, was also featured in the subsequent four-part series Urmel plays in the castle (D 1974 ).
  • In the Land of the Saurians / Land of the Lost (USA 1974–1976). The fantastic adventure series brought dinosaurs, animated in stop-motion technology, directly onto the screen for the first time. The series In the Land of the Saurians II (USA 1991–1992) followed almost 20 years later with other actors and new stories. A film version, based on the series from the 1970s, was released in 2009 under the title The almost forgotten world (see above).
  • The Dinos / Dinosaurs (USA 1991–1994). This family series around the dinosaur Earl Sinclair and his relatives achievedgreat popularitythanks to the full-body dolls from Jim Henson's workshopand the funny dialogues. It aired 65 episodes in four seasons.
  • Barney and Friends / Barney & Friends (USA 1992). Similar to Sesame Street ,this television series for children of preschool and early school age,which has been produced to this day,conveyssimple learning content. Barney is a purple dinosaur who, together with other plush dinosaurs and children in the studio, spreads his optimistic-friendly attitude through dancing and singing.
  • The Lost World (TV series) / Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World (Canada, Australia, New Zealand 1999–2002, directed by Richard Franklin ). The pilot film, which was largely based on the book The Forgotten World , was also shown in the cinema. The 66 episodes of the three seasons for television differ widely from Conan Doyle's novel. A planned fourth season was not realized.
  • Dino Dan is a Canadian-American television series for children aged 2 to 17. The series was invented and produced by JJ Johnson in Toronto / Canada together with Sinking Ship Entertainment.
  • Dinotopia / Dinotopia (USA, GB, Germany 2002). The three-part mini - series based on the book Dinotopia by James Gurney has so far mostly been broadcast in two parts in Germany. Two brothers come to an island where humans and intelligent, speaking dinosaurs live together peacefully. With other actors, a television series was then produced under the same title, but it had little success.
  • Primeval - Return of the primeval monsters / Primeval (GB since 2007). Impossible Pictures , who previously workedon dinosaur documentaries such as The Ancestors of the Saurians for the BBC , have produced four seasons of this series with a total of 29 episodes since 2007. A team of scientists is studying time anomalies that allow dinosaurs and other extinct creatures to appear in our time.
  • Terra Nova (USA 2010-2011). A 13-part science fiction series broadcast by Fox . In the 22nd century, mankind finds a way to travel back in time for 85 million years. It is seen as a way out of the world, which is hardly habitable anymore due to overpopulation and environmental pollution, and to enable mankind a "new start". The settlers encounter a variety of different dinosaurs, including both peaceful herbivores and aggressive predators.
