Michael "Mike" Rowland Stanley CNZM (born November 6, 1957 in Lower Hutt , New Zealand ) is a former New Zealand rower who was eighth in 1982 and 1983 world champion . After his career, Mike Stanley worked in various functions in New Zealand sports as an official.

Life

The 1.82 m tall Mike Stanley was part of the rowing team that missed participation in the 1980 Olympic Games because of the Olympic boycott. In 1981 he finished seventh at the world championships with eighth. In 1982 he was a member of the New Zealand eight, which won the title in front of the boats from the GDR and the Soviet Union at the World Championships in Lucerne . The following year, the New Zealand eighth under coach Harry Mahon won the World Championships in Duisburg in front of the boats from the GDR and Australia. At the Olympic Games in 1984, the Canadians won ahead of the US eight, the New Zealanders finished fourth, seven tenths of a second behind the Australians.

From 1993 to 2003, Mike Stanley was Rowing New Zealand's first chairman . He then served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of AUT Millenium , a charity promoting sport and health in Auckland. From 2004 Mike Stanley worked for the New Zealand Olympic Committee (NZOC), and in 2009 he became President of the NZOC. With the New Years List published on December 31, 2016, Mike Stanley was named a Companion in the New Zealand Order of Merit . The award was presented in April 2017.
