Montélimar, in the foreground the Rhone

Montélimar is a French commune with 39,097 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Drôme department ( Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region ). The inhabitants call themselves Montiliens .

geography

The city is on the edge of Provence , in the Rhone valley , between Valence and Orange . On the western outskirts of the city there is a navigable shortcut channel of the Rhône, which is named after the city of Canal de dérivation de Montélimar . The tributary Roubion also flows into this after it has crossed Montélimar.

history

Montélimar was built around a castle of the Adhémar family from the 12th century. The family gave the city its name. Montélimar is derived from Petit Mont d'Adhémar ("small mountain of Adhémar"). The castle and the historic old town have been preserved to this day.

US soldiers and resistance fighters of the FFI were involved in the liberation of the city of Montélimar and the surrounding area. A first attempt was put down by the Wehrmacht in July 1944. A few days after the Allied landing in Provence on August 15, 1944, Hitler gave the order to retreat from the south-west and south of France through the Rhone Valley. The Allies and the Resistance tried to stop or delay the retreat of the Germans. Between August 21 and 28, there was heavy fighting in and around Montélimar. Balance on August 29: high German losses, several thousand dead, prisoners, wounded and vehicles, corpses and parts of military equipment were lying around everywhere.
