He spent most of his career with the Boston Bruins , where he holds numerous franchise records and which he led as captain for over 15 years . Shortly before the end of his active career, he moved to the Colorado Avalanche , where he won the Stanley Cup with his last NHL game. With the Canadian national team , he won two gold medals at the Canada Cup and took part in the 1998 Winter Olympics.
Bourque is considered one of the best defenders of all time, so his 410 goals, 1169 assists and 1579 points are unmatched in his position to this day. He was also honored five times with the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the best defender in the league, as well as in 1980 with the Calder Memorial Trophy as the best rookie in the NHL. In 2004 he was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame .
Career
Ray Bourque was drawn in the 1979 NHL Entry Draft at position 8 by the Boston Bruins .
Ray Bourque played non-stop for the Boston Bruins between 1979 and 2000. During this time he did not succeed in winning the Stanley Cup with his team . With his career coming to an end, Ray asked Bourque for a move to a team that had more potential to win the famous trophy. The owners of the Boston Bruins complied with his request and so Ray Bourque switched to the Colorado Avalanche on March 7, 2000 . In 2001, after 22 years, Ray Bourque succeeded in fulfilling his greatest dream and winning the Stanley Cup, whereupon he ended his playing career on June 26, 2001.
At the end of his career he could claim records for the most goals (410), most assists (1169) and most points (1579) of a defensive player.
His jersey number 77 was Avalanche of the Boston Bruins and Colorado locked . Bourque had started his career with the number 7, but this was withdrawn by the Boston Bruins for Phil Esposito and so Bourque switched to number 77.
He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004 .
