history

Saint-Riquier dates back to the 7th century. Centulum was the old Latin name for the medieval village. In addition to the name Centulum, there was also the variant Centula. Today the village is named after the monk named Riquier ( Richerius or Richarius in the sources), who founded a monastery near Centulum. Construction of the abbey began as early as the 8th century, but most of it was not built until the 15th and 16th centuries in the high Gothic style . At the time of the Carolingian monastery of well-known personalities as was Angilbert and the emperor's grandson Ludwig passed.

City charter was granted in 1126.

The German twin town of Saint-Riquiers has been Stutensee in Baden-Württemberg since 1982 .

Attractions

Saint-Riquier Abbey Church

The town's landmark is the former abbey with its church from the 8th to 16th centuries. The original building with a westwork from the end of the 8th century was probably built under the direction of Angilbert. The organ dates from the 18th century. Sculptures, furniture and paintings can be seen in the abbey. The wall paintings in the treasury from the 16th century are particularly noteworthy. Also worth seeing are the hospice with chapel from the 18th century (completed in 1704) and a square sandstone defense tower, completed in the 16th century.

Culture

Every summer, Saint-Riquier Abbey hosts the international musical festival known as Festival Estival or Le Festival de Musique.
