- Washington, DC / United States : US President Barack Obama announces the end of the Constellation space program due to financial constraints . Instead of a new manned lunar mission, the corresponding funds from the state budget are to be used to promote commercial flights to the International Space Station .

- Brasília / Brazil : The government approves the construction of the Belo Monte hydropower plant on the Rio Xingu . After its completion, the hydropower plant there will be the third largest in the world. Because of the destruction of the rainforest and the necessary resettlement of indigenous people, the construction has come under fire.
- Karbala / Iraq : At least 45 people die and over 70 others are injured in an attack on Shiite pilgrims.
- Paris / France : Start of proceedings to investigate the cause of the crash of Air France flight 4590 , which crashed into a hotel shortly after taking off from Charles de Gaulle airport .
- Stuttgart / Germany : Construction work on the controversial Stuttgart 21 rail project begins.

- Athens / Greece : Parliament re- elects incumbent Karolos Papoulias as president of the country with 266 out of 300 votes.
- Brussels / Belgium : The European Commission puts Greece's budget under EU control. By 2012, the country has to push its new debt below the EU convergence criteria mark of 3% of gross domestic product.
- Lausanne / Switzerland : The Federal Supreme Court ruled that the assets of the former Haitian dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier will not be paid out to Haiti. The money in question remains frozen in an account with a Swiss bank and Duvalier's relatives can hope for payment soon.

- Ankara / Turkey : The Erdoğan government is repealing the Emasya Protocol , which allowed the armed forces to take over power in individual provinces of Turkey without being empowered to do so by district administrators or governors.
- London / United Kingdom : The sculpture L'Homme qui marche I by the Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti achieved the equivalent of 74 million euros at auction , making it the most expensive plastic work of art ever auctioned.
- Munich / Germany : Less than five months after the fatal assault on Dominik Brunner , charges of murder are brought against the two alleged perpetrators .

- Belfast / United Kingdom : The Protestant Ulster Volunteer Force and the Ulster Defense Association as well as the Irish National Liberation Army and the Official Irish Republican Army lay down their weapons in Northern Ireland on time.
- Cape Canaveral / United States : The space shuttle mission STS-130 of the Endeavor successfully launched to the International Space Station one day late .
- Kabul / Afghanistan : In an avalanche caused by a snowstorm , numerous vehicles are buried on a 3.5-kilometer section of the Salang Strait , killing at least 166 people.
- Washington, DC / United States : The Boeing 747-8F aircraft is making its maiden flight.

- Strasbourg / France : The European Parliament confirms the new Commission under President José Manuel Barroso .

- Cape Canaveral / United States : The Solar Dynamics Observatory , which is supposed to continue observing the sun through the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, starts two days late .
- Hamburg / Germany : In the newspaper Die Welt , the FDP - Federal Chairman Guido Westerwelle writes about the discomfort of those affected with the Hartz IV legislation : "Who promises the people effortless prosperity, invites you to late Roman decadence ." These words solve a storm of Outrage because very few Hartz IV recipients associate their situation with the term “prosperity”.
- Strasbourg / France : The European Parliament rejects the SWIFT agreement with 378 votes to 196 .
- Tehran / Iran : On the 31st anniversary of the “ Islamic Revolution ”, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad declares the country a “nuclear state” and that the country is already in a position to build nuclear weapons . At the same time, there are violent clashes between demonstrators and security forces in the capital.

- Benghazi / Libya : Head of State Muammar al-Gaddafi calls for “ jihad against Switzerland , Zionism and foreign aggression” as a result of the Swiss minaret dispute .
- Berlin / Germany : The Bundestag approves with a large majority the extension of the Afghanistan mission by one year and an increase in the Bundeswehr contingent by up to 850 soldiers.
- Copenhagen / Denmark : Politiken newspaper apologizes for offending Muslims with the Muhammad cartoons.
- Lausanne / Switzerland : The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) demands that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) withdraw the bronze medal for the Chinese women's team at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney , because gymnast Dong Fanxiao was proven to have falsified the age information. Fanxiao was only 14 years old when she participated; the required minimum age was 16 years. This would move the team from the USA to third place. In addition, the FIG deleted all of Fanxiao's results from 1999 and 2000.
