The Friedrichstadt is a left side of the same city suburb of Dresden and belongs to the municipality Old Town , but forms its own district . Friedrichstadt is one of the Dresden suburbs .
history
The first mention of this area, at that time the village of Oztrov (or Ostra ), was made in a document from Margrave Dietrich von Meissen dated March 31, 1206, the same document in which Dresden was first mentioned. The Old Sorbian word oztrov means river island and thus characterizes the flood-free area west of the former natural confluence of the Weißeritz into the Elbe, in which Ostra was. To the west were the smaller villages Rostagk and Wernten , which were abandoned in the 15th century and whose land was added to Ostra.
After the village came into the possession of Elector August 1559 , who enlarged the area through purchases, the village of Ostra was dissolved in 1568. In its place the Ostravorwerk was founded, whose task it was to ensure the supply of the court and the Dresden fortress. The previous villagers were resettled and received as compensation mainly formerly monastic lands near Leubnitz , whose ownership had passed to the electoral court during the Reformation . Other villagers were put up with soils near Zschertnitz .
Residents of the surrounding villages were called in to labor for the management of the massively expanded Vorwerk.
In the period that followed, an animal enclosure was built (the Ostra enclosure ) and the suburb of Ostra as a craftsmen's settlement , which was renamed Friedrichstadt in 1730 (in honor of the Saxon elector and later elector Friedrich August II ).
In 1835 Friedrichstadt was incorporated into Dresden.
In 1945 the Catholic Apostolic Church fell victim to the bombing raids.

Today's cityscape
One of the most important cemeteries in Dresden, the Old Catholic Cemetery, is located on Friedrichstädter Friedrichstrasse (which, by the way, is not named after the same Friedrich) directly opposite the Friedrichstadt hospital . Friedrichstadt is characterized by the listed hospital , the few remaining buildings of the Vorwerk and the technical town hall at the Dresden-Friedrichstadt marshalling yard . As one of the few intact streets near the city center, Friedrichstrasse has numerous residential buildings of this style that are listed as historical monuments in addition to the baroque St. Matthew's Church .
In Friedrichstadt there is also the Alberthafen with the widely visible building of the Dresdener Mühle or Hafenmühle as well as the former municipal cattle and slaughterhouse , today's fair .
traffic
Friedrichstadt is linked directly to regional rail services in the direction of Görlitz and Leipzig via the Dresden-Mitte train station , which is located on the eastern border of the Wilsdruffer Vorstadt district . The S-Bahn connects Friedrichstadt with Dresden Airport in 19 minutes . Trains to Hoyerswerda and Cottbus also stop at the southern Dresden-Friedrichstadt station .
Numerous tram lines also run through Friedrichstadt and the “Bahnhof Mitte” stop is a superordinate traffic junction for tram and bus lines with a connection to the S-Bahn.
The logistics center from which the CarGoTram runs to the Gläserne Manufaktur is also located in Friedrichstadt .
