Signature of Jennifer Lopez (2012)

Jennifer Lynn Lopez (also called "J.Lo", born July 24, 1969 in New York City ) is an American singer and actress of Puerto Rican origin. She became known worldwide through songs like If You Had My Love , Love Don't Cost a Thing and Jenny from the Block .

With 80 million records sold, she is one of the most successful singers today. In 2014 she was recognized for her life's work at the Billboard Music Awards .

Life

childhood

Lopez was born in New York City, the second of three children, and grew up in the Parkchester neighborhood. Her parents had moved from Puerto Rico to the Bronx before she was born . Like her two sisters, she attended a Catholic girls' school until she was 18. Lopez then moved to the local Baruch College , which she left after two semesters to work as a paralegal. At the same time, after years of training, she worked both as a dance teacher and as a professional dancer in various New York nightclubs .

Private life

Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony (2008)

Jennifer Lopez was married three times. Her first marriage to a waiter lasted from February 1997 to January 1998. He later became the manager of one of their restaurants. Lopez's second marriage was to a former dancer on her show. The two had met while filming the music video for Love Don't Cost a Thing . The marriage lasted from September 2001 to June 2002.

On June 5, 2004 Lopez married - after a broken engagement to Ben Affleck  - the singer Marc Anthony (real name Marco Antonio Muñiz) less than a week after his divorce from the former Miss Universe , Dayanara Torres. Lopez has also since been the stepmother of two sons from Anthony's previous relationships. She gave birth to twins on February 22, 2008. In July 2011, Lopez and Anthony split. From 2011 to 2016 she was in a relationship with the dancer Casper Smart, who also appeared in her stage choreographies. After a short liaison with the Canadian rapper Drake , she has been in public with the baseball player Alex Rodríguez since around February 2017 .

Career

After performing around the world with a well-known New York dance combo, Jennifer Lopez found work as a breakdance and background dancer on television in the early 1990s . Appearances in music videos like Janet Jackson's That’s the Way Love Goes followed, before she got her first speaking roles in television series like South Central or Hotel Malibu .

Music career

In 1998 Lopez signed her first recording deal with Sony Records . Shaped by her parents' Latin American roots and the multicultural influences of the Bronx, she wrote and co-produced an album with the help of successful producers such as Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins and Corey Rooney, which differed greatly from the sound of teen pop culture of the time. Shortly after its publication in the summer of 1999, On the 6 showed itself to be a (co-) creator of the so-called "Latin Wave", which dominated the charts around the world at the turn of the millennium thanks to artists such as Enrique Iglesias , Ricky Martin and Marc Anthony and Lopez the title one "Parade- Latina " brought in. Not least thanks to five successful singles - If You Had My Love , Waiting for Tonight , Feelin So Good , Let's Get Loud and No me ames (in a duet with Marc Anthony) - the album sold over seven million times.

In spring 2001 it followed with J. Lo Lopez 'second album, which even exceeded the success of the debut - within a few months it sold more than eight million copies worldwide. While the record climbed to number 1 in the album charts in the United States as well as in Germany and Switzerland, the singles Love Don't Cost a Thing , Play and Ain't It Funny recorded further top 10 hits. After the release of the last single I'm Real , it was decided to release an alternative remix of the original version of the song with rapper Ja Rule . The duet produced by Irv Gotti was sold so well that the producers wanted to bring a complete album based on this model onto the market. Well-known songs were re-sung, remixed or modernized with technical features and Lopez released J to tha LO !: The Remixes in spring 2002, the first remix album. The album became the first of its kind to hit number one on the US Billboard charts and was extremely successful outside of the United States. The remixed versions of I'm Real and Ain't It Funny became number one hits in the States and top 10 hits worldwide. The remix for I'm Gonna Be Alright finally became a summer hit in Germany in August 2002.

At the end of 2002 Lopez returned with her fourth album This Is Me ... Then and landed more hits with Jenny from the Block , All I Have and I'm Glad . In the United States, All I Have became a number 1 hit, and another single, Baby I Love U! could no longer match the success of the first. Despite everything, This Is Me ... Then became one of the best-selling albums of 2003 with six million copies.

Jennifer Lopez (2006)

After she recorded the ballad Escapemonos with Marc Anthony in the summer of 2004 , which was to appear on Marc's new album, she returned after a break in March 2005 with her fifth album. Rebirth again relied on more beats and up-tempo numbers, quickly reached high chart positions worldwide, but then only sold moderately. So far, almost three and a half million CDs have sold over the counter. The first single Get Right developed into a hit, the second Hold You Down was only able to reach sixth place in Great Britain, but not assert itself anywhere else and only made it into the top 50 in Germany. Cherrie Pie was released as a radio single in the United States in the fall of 2005. A video was planned, but was then repeatedly postponed and ultimately not made.

In early 2006 Lopez returned successfully to the charts in a duet with LL Cool J. Control Myself became a top 30 hit in Germany, in England the song reached number two in the charts for a week and number four in the United States. In March 2007, after three years of intensive studio work, Lopez's first Spanish-language album Como ama una mujer followed , on which she had worked with husband Marc Anthony and producers Estéfano and Julio Reyes, among others. The record reached the top of the Billboard Hot Latin Album Charts and was also in the top 10 in German-speaking countries. The album's first single, Qué hiciste , became another number 1 success in Italy , Turkey and Switzerland. It was not until August 2007 that the Spanish album was advertised again, including by extracting the second single Mehaces falta . The video shows Lopez together with a lover on the run from the FBI . The single was only released as a "Promo" and only a few Promo Maxi CDs came on the market; Me haces falta became a hit in Spain . In the fall, Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez announced that a third single from Como ama una mujer was planned. In keeping with the joint tour through America, Por arriesgarnos , a duet between the two, was to become another promo single. The sales of the album increased again and Como ama una mujer reached the top 10 of the best-selling Spanish albums.

After the Spanish-language album from March 2007, another album was released on October 5, 2007 with Brave . The release Do It Well only sold moderately worldwide. Because of her pregnancy and the tour, there was little time for her doctorate. On January 11, 2008, the second single from Brave, Hold It, Don't Drop It, was to be released exclusively in the UK and Europe. Although the video started on MTV , it was removed from the program and no longer broadcast on any music channel. It was decided to postpone the publication in Germany. Neither in the download charts nor in the radio charts, the song was well received, it was then canceled in almost all of Europe. The single was only released in Great Britain and Italy. Without promotion or appearances, Hold It, Don't Drop It missed their entry into the UK charts and only made it into the Top 100 - only in Italy did the single become a top 10 hit. In April 2008, This Boy's Fire by Carlos Santana came out in a duet with Lopez.

In March 2009 the song Hooked on You surfaced on the Internet, whereupon Lopez announced that she was working on a new album. Two more songs ( What Is Love? And One Love ) appeared a little later on the Internet and, according to Lopez, should also appear on the new album. In October 2009, Fresh Out the Oven was released (together with rapper Pitbull). She sang the song Louboutins for the first time at the American Music Awards on November 22, 2009. Shortly thereafter, Lopez's recording contract with Sony Music Group ended, which led to further promotions for Louboutins , including a corresponding music video, were canceled.

In March 2010 it was announced that Lopez had signed a new recording deal with Island Def Jam Music Group . Their first studio album under Island Def Jam Music Group was originally due to be released at the same time as their new film Plan B for Love , but the release has been postponed several times. In February, On the Floor was finally released featuring Pitbull , the first official single from the new album, entitled Love? released and premiered at the 68th  Golden Globe Awards . The music video for On the Floor premiered on March 3, 2011 on American Idol . The next day, the song topped the US iTunes charts. The song reached number 1 in the charts in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. It was Lopez's first number one hit and in 2011 the best-selling in Germany. Your seventh studio album Love? was published on April 29, 2011 in Germany. On April 1, 2011, Lopez and rapper Lil Wayne released their second single I'm into You , which reached number 41 in the United States and several top 20 positions internationally. On September 13th, the third single Papi was released.

Jennifer Lopez (2014)

After Love , the greatest hits album Dance Again ... the Hits was released on Epic Records . The album was released on July 20, 2012. To promote this album, Lopez went on the Dance Again World Tour . Meanwhile, the single Dance Again with Pitbull was released, it was able to place in the singles charts. In 2013 Lopez is working on her eighth studio album. The first single from it is Live It Up with Pitbull, produced by RedOne . It was released on May 8, 2013. On June 13, 2014, her eighth studio album, AKA , was released. The third single Booty was remixed with Iggy Azalea and a Top 20 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.

In 2014 she and Claudia Leitte were involved in the official song of the 2014 World Cup , We Are One (Ole Ola) by Pitbull . On May 12, 2015, it was announced that she would be receiving a Las Vegas show at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino . The first ten concerts of the show were sold out.

In February 2020, she appeared on the Super Bowl LIV halftime show with Shakira .

Acting career

Supporting roles in films such as the thriller Money Train (1995) or Francis Ford Coppola's comedy Jack (1996) made her known to a larger audience. In Bob Rafelson's film noir Blood and Wine (1996) she appeared alongside Jack Nicholson and Michael Caine . In 1997 she played the title role in the biography Selena - An American Dream . In the same year she appeared in Anaconda as an action heroine and also starred in the Oliver Stone film U-Turn - No way back . In 1998, Steven Soderbergh's romantic crime comedy Out of Sight (with George Clooney ) followed, and in 2000 the psychological thriller The Cell, which is characterized by masks, costumes and special effects .

Lopez subsequently focused more on her music career and began staging and marketing her work, her private life and her body, which her new-found cinema audience was less enthusiastic about than the gossip press. Films like the drama Angel Eyes (2001) or the romantic comedy Manhattan Love Story (2002) earned bad reviews. Her now increasing nominations for the Golden Raspberry , which she received in 2003 for Love with Risk - Gigli , were an indicator of the increasing malice in the film industry. In 2004 the romantic comedy May I ask? , in which she played alongside Richard Gere , a hit with audiences.

The Monster-in-Law followed in 2005 , with Jane Fonda at her side. In the same year, the drama An Untamed Life with Robert Redford and Morgan Freeman , which had already been completed two years earlier, was released in the cinemas. In all three films, however, the characters played by acting veterans were at the center of the plot. In 2006 she returned to the screen with the thriller Bordertown and showed a completely new side, because for the first time a film with her was based on facts. Lopez came to the Berlinale in 2007 and received an award for Bordertown . Also in 2006, Jennifer Lopez appeared at the side of husband Marc Anthony in El Cantante ; he plays the Puerto Rican singer Héctor Lavoe . This film is also based on real events.

In March 2010, she returned to the big screen with the comedy Plan B for Love . In 2011 Lopez advertised the Gillette razor brand. In May 2012 the comedy What happens when it's happened was released. In the film, Lopez plays alongside Cameron Diaz , Elizabeth Banks , Chace Crawford , Brooklyn Decker , Anna Kendrick , Matthew Morrison , Dennis Quaid , Chris Rock and Rodrigo Santoro . In February 2013, she starred alongside Jason Statham in the action thriller Parker . Since January 2016 she can be seen in the television series Shades of Blue .

In the German versions of her films, Lopez does not have a permanent dubbing voice. It is often spoken of by Natascha Geisler or Ghadah Al-Akel .

further activities

In 2001 Lopez created the JLO by Jennifer Lopez clothing line . The collection comprised a wide range of different clothing items for young women, including jeans, T-shirts, skirts, belts, shoes and underwear, but also jewelry and other accessories. In 2005, Jennifer Lopez added the Sweetface line to its range .

In addition, Lopez is very successful in the perfumery market : The debut creation Glow , presented in 2002, held the top of the sales statistics in nine countries for more than four months. In 2003 and 2005 followed, accompanied by various body lotions and skin creams, with Still and Live two more fragrances. In August 2006 she launched Live Luxe , her first men's perfume in 2008. The perfume line is a celebrity's most successful perfume line, with sales of $ 2 billion.

In April 2002, Lopez's Cuban restaurant Madre's opened in Pasadena, California . In 2009 Fox announced that they would be co- producing a remake of the Rebelde Way series in the US . Lopez was a judge on American Idol seasons 10, 11, 13, and 14 . In 2013, US toy manufacturer Mattel Lopez dedicated a Barbie collection.

In October 2014 she published her biography with True Love .

successes

Lopez was the first female artist to be number 1 in the album charts and number 1 in the cinema charts. She was also the first solo artist under Epic Records to have an album ranked # 1 on the United States charts. Your remix album J to tha LO! The Remixes was the first of its kind to reach # 1 on the US album charts. In 2010 she was honored with the Legend Award at the World Music Awards for her influence on the music industry. In 2013 she was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the music category. At the Billboard Music Awards 2014 she was the first female artist to receive the Icon Award for her life's work.
