Obererbach (Westerwald) is a municipality in the Altenkirchen (Westerwald) district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of Altenkirchen-Flammersfeld .

location

Obererbach lies in the northwest of the low mountain range Westerwald in the north of the natural area Altenkirchener plateau . The eponymous main town is located about four kilometers (the Niedererbach district about three kilometers) north of the center of Altenkirchen on the road from Eichelhardt or Mammelzen to Hilgenroth . You are surrounded by fields, meadows and mixed forest; the Erbach flows through it . A few kilometers away are the Rhein-Westerwald Nature Park in the southwest and the Bergisches Land Nature Park in the northwest .

history

The current town of Obererbach was first mentioned in 1358 in connection with a castle built by the Lords of Koberstein (also Koverstein) , which was located at what is now Hofgut Koberstein , southwest of Niedererbach .

Obererbach belonged to the parish Altenkirchen, which represented both the ecclesiastical catchment area as well as one of the lower secular administrative units in the county of Sayn . Together with today's districts of Niedererbach and Hacksen and other localities in the parish, Obererbach was listed in the parish court's records around 1610.

Since the middle of the 17th century, the villages of Nieder- and Obererbach and Hacksen belonged to the county of Sayn-Altenkirchen . At the beginning of the 18th century, the Niedererbacher mill was built and operated as a ban mill for the surrounding communities. In 1803 Hacksen, Nieder- and Obererbach came together with the County of Sayn-Altenkirchen to the Principality of Nassau-Usingen , in 1806 to the Duchy of Nassau and in 1815 to the Kingdom of Prussia . From 1816 to the villages were autonomous communities , by the then newly created mayoralty Altenkirchen in Altenkirchen in Koblenz administrative region were managed.

Ecclesiastically, the villages of Nieder- and Obererbach and Hacksen belonged to the Altenkirchen parish, which originally belonged to the Archdiocese of Cologne . The inhabitants of the villages were assigned to the branch church in Hilgenroth . In the middle of the 16th century the Counts of Sayn introduced the Lutheran and in 1605 the Reformed denomination. Even today the inhabitants of Obererbach are predominantly Protestant.

Today the Protestant Christians from Obererbach and Hacksen belong to the Protestant parish Hilgenroth, which has been independent since 1867, and the Protestant Christians in the Niedererbach district belong to the Evangelical parish of Altenkirchen, both of which are assigned to the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland . The Catholic Christians belong to the parish of Marienthal .

school

The Reformed parish of Altenkirchen took the first steps in the middle of the 17th century to set up a school in Niedererbach, which was set up "for the training of young people and for church tasks". The first schoolhouse was built in Niedererbach before 1744. The villages of Bachenberg, Dieperzen, Hacksen, Niedererbach, Obererbach and Volkerzen originally belonged to the school district of Niedererbach. In 1802 Volkerzen left the school association. The Protestant parish school in Niedererbach, which was previously under church sponsorship, was transferred to the local communities of the school association in 1825. The school association built a new school building in Niedererbach in 1839. In statistics from 1843, Niedererbach with 86 inhabitants and Obererbach with 39 inhabitants have their own schools. In 1912 the local parishes of Bachenberg and Dieperzen founded their own school association and left the Niedererbach School. Hacksen, Niedererbach and Obererbach now formed an independent school association. From 1914 to 1915 a new school was built in Niedererbach. During the Second World War, classes had to be discontinued at the beginning of 1945 and could only be resumed after the end of the war in autumn 1945. Since the number of pupils increased enormously in the course of the 1950s, the local community of Obererbach (Westerwald) decided to build another school building, which was completed in 1961. Today there are still three former school buildings in the community.

Incorporation

On April 1, 1939, the previously independent communities of Obererbach, Niedererbach and Hacksen were merged to form the community of Obererbach (Westerwald).

Justification of the coat of arms: The eagle goes back to the coat of arms of the Lords of Koberstein, who in the middle of the 14th century built a castle at the place where the Hofgut Koberstein is today and had an eagle in their coat of arms. The colors gold and red refer to the colors in the coat of arms of the Counts of Sayn , the tripartite division of the coat of arms symbolizes the three districts of the municipality. The certificate of approval was issued on September 21, 1995.

Sights and cultural monuments

The former train station in Obererbach was built in 1886. The building, which is elaborately structured with ashlar, consists of small ashlar masonry and a timber-framed goods shed. The building was restored by the current owners and is now used as a residential building.
