overview
The nominations were announced on July 14, 2011 by Melissa McCarthy and Joshua Jackson at the Leonard H. Goldenson Theater . Programs that were broadcast from June 1, 2010 to May 31, 2011 were taken into account. Mildred Pierce (21) received most of the mentions in advance . The HBO production is a film adaptation of the novel of the same name by James M. Cain and focuses on a single mother (played by Kate Winslet ), who successfully opened a restaurant at the time of the " Great Depression " and at the same time for the love of her daughter ( Evan Rachel Wood ) courting. Hollywood had already successfully adapted the book for the big screen in 1945 . The drama series Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire received 19 and 18 nominations, respectively.
The most successful format at the awards ceremony was the comedy series Modern Family (ABC), which was able to convert five of its 17 nominations into prizes (including best comedy series, best supporting actor). The British multi-part television series Downton Abbey was successful four times , receiving eleven nominations and prevailing over Mildred Pierce in the mini-series or television film category . For the fourth year in a row, AMC series Mad Men won the award for best drama series, while Jon Stewart's The Daily Show was recognized as best variety, music or comedy show for the ninth year in a row.
The non-broadcast of a recorded joke by Alec Baldwin based on the News-of-the-World bugging scandal caused a scandal . The American actor, who has twice received an Emmy for his performance in the comedy series 30 Rock , stayed away from the event.
