Diego Forlán , full name Diego Martín Forlán Corazo , (born May 19, 1979 in Montevideo ) is a former Uruguayan football player who was at times record national player and record scorer in his country.
Career
society
Beginnings in Uruguay and Argentina
Forlán, who was a successful tennis player in his early teens , began his football career in children's football (Baby Fútbol) at the Carrasco Lawn Tennis Club . He then played in the sixth and fifth divisions at Peñarol . From there he moved to Danubio FC - according to Forlán's statement to CNN , he played there for a year - and competed for him in the fourth division. He left Danubio in 1994 for Club Atlético Independiente . In November 1995, at the age of 16, he played for the then second division AS Nancy under coach László Bölöni , but apparently could not convince those responsible, even if, according to the then active player Abdeslam Ouaddou Forlán's talent, it was obvious and returned after five Months back.
At Independiente he first played in the youth team in the fourth Argentine league and appeared there as a goal scorer with ten goals in the Torneo Apertura. Later he was also used in the 3rd División. In 1998 he made under the coach of the reserve Raul Gordillo the jump into the coached by César Luis Menotti first team, which played in the Primera División . He made his debut on October 25, 1998 against the Argentinos Juniors . With his career breakthrough in mind, however, he was initially sent back to the reserve after returning from the Junior World Championships in 1999. Only after the coach change to Enzo Trossero did he get back to the professional team. Instead of attacking, he used it in left midfield. In the 2000/01 season he played 36 games (18 goals). This was followed by another 18 games with twelve goals scored by the end of 2001. In December 2001, he left Independiente.
Manchester United
His good goal record aroused the interest of European clubs. In January 2002, the CA Independiente agreed with the English first division club Middlesbrough FC ; the amount of £ 6.9 million was to be paid in 18 installments. But this contract was not signed by Forlán, because on January 22, 2002 Forlán moved for the same price to Manchester United as a replacement for the migrated Andy Cole . The reason he gave was that Manchester offered more money than Middlesbrough.
The striker made his debut on January 29, 2002 in a 4-0 win at Bolton Wanderers when he came on for Ole Gunnar Solskjær in the 76th minute . Diego Forlán made his starting line-up debut on March 6, 2002 in a 4-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur . His first season ended without scoring in 13 league and five Champions League games. In his second season in 2002/03 he won the English league title with Manchester United. Forlán scored only ten league goals in 63 Premier League games for the English club and three goals in European competitions during his time with the club from Manchester . With one FA Cup goal and three goals in the Carling Cup , he scored 17 goals in his time with the English. In the 2003/04 season he won the FA Cup with the English .
Villarreal CF
In August 2004, Diego Forlán moved to Villarreal in the Spanish Primera División for a transfer fee of three million euros . He signed a five-year contract with the Spanish. In his first season he was not allowed to play for Villarreal in the European competition, as he had already played in the Manchester game against Dinamo Bucharest that season and was therefore banned from his new club in the UEFA Cup. With 25 goals in the 2004/05 season, only one of which was scored with a penalty, he overtook Samuel Eto'o , who had been leading in this category for almost the entire season, in the scorer list on the last day of the match and was the Spanish top scorer . He also won the golden shoe as the best scorer in Europe (together with Thierry Henry ). He was also voted best Ibero-American player of the season that year and won the EFE Trofeo of the Spanish news agency EFE .
Forlán scored a total of 59 goals for Villarreal. This made him the most successful goalscorer in the club's history until he was replaced in this position at the beginning of 2011 by Giuseppe Rossi .
Atlético Madrid
On June 30, 2007, Diego Forlán's transfer for 21 million euros to league rivals Atlético Madrid was sealed. He signed a four-year contract with the Madrilenians. Various additional clauses meant that the transfer fee would later be increased by two million euros.
Since April 2008 Forlán has been the most successful Uruguayan in the history of the Spanish league in terms of the number of goals scored with his 68th goal against Almería, replacing his compatriot José Luis Zalazar in this ranking. That year Forlán was also named the best Ibero-American player in the league. In the 2008/09 season Forlán was Spain's top scorer for the second time with 32 league goals and again won the golden shoe.
In the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League final against FC Fulham in Hamburg , he scored both goals for Atlético Madrid, who won 2-1 after extra time. Then he also received the award as the best player of the finals. With Atlético he also won the European Supercup in the same year . At the beginning of March 2011 Forlán then managed to enter the top 10 most successful goal scorers in the history of the Madrid club, as he had scored 74 goals in 127 league games up to this point. This hit yield meant an average of 0.58 goals per game.
In a press conference at the end of August 2011, he said goodbye to Madrid and highlighted the highlights of his four years with the Madrid team: the successful qualifying duel for the Champions League against Schalke 04 , the Europa League final, the European Supercup, winning the Golden Boot and the lost final of the Copa del Rey . Especially after the lost final he was impressed by the support of the fans in the stands 45 minutes after the end of the game. The personal support for him and the “Uruguayo” shouts in the stadium remained in his memory. He said goodbye as a fan of the club. The club president Atléticos Enrique Cerezo described the Uruguayan on the occasion of the farewell to his new employer Inter Milan as a player with the attributes "superlativo" and "fantástico".
A total of 96 competitive matches are scored for Forlán in the national league, in the European cup competitions including the Intertoto Cup and the Copa del Rey .
Forlán's staging statistics for the Spanish capitals show a total of 134 first division games with 74 goals, as well as 46 completed games in European club competitions (Champions League including qualification, UEFA Cup including qualification, Europa League including qualification, Intertoto Cup and final the Super Cup), in which he scored 16 goals. '
During his time in Madrid, Forlán finished fifth in the 2010 FIFA Ballon d'Or election .
Inter Milan
On August 31, 2011, Inter Milan also officially announced the signing of Forlán. Forlán signed a two-year contract until June 30, 2013. Due to injuries, however, he was only used irregularly in the 2011/12 season . While he was used 18 times in Serie A and scored two goals, he only played two games in the Champions League (no goal). During his time at Inter, Forlán took seventh place in the 2011 FIFA Ballon d'Or election , which Lionel Messi won.
SC Internacional
In July 2012 Forlán moved to the Brazilian first division club SC Internacional , with whom he signed a three-year contract until June 30, 2015. There he played in 47 league games (13 in Campeonato Gaúcho , 34 in Série A ) and scored 19 goals (nine: Gaúcho / ten: Série A). He also contributed three goals in eight appearances in the Copa do Brasil . The club itself reported on the day of his early contract that he had played 52 games for the club and scored 22 goals. The games were not allocated to a competition. In 2013 he won the state championship of Rio Grande do Sul , the Campeonato Gaúcho, with the Brazilians .
Cerezo Osaka
On January 22, 2014 Forlán dissolved his contract with SC Internacional and moved to the Japanese J. League Division 1 to Cerezo Osaka , where he signed a contract until December 30, 2014. There was also the possibility of a subsequent six-month extension. In May 2014, Forlán stated that he felt comfortable in Japan with regard to his sporting future, but that he could also envision a station in the United States. However, he refuted rumors about a future engagement with Peñarol . For the Japanese, he completed 26 first division games and scored seven times in the opposing goal. In addition, he scored two goals in six appearances in the AFC Champions League and played once each in the Kaiser Cup and the J. League Cup without being able to show any personal scoring there. After relegating the team to the second division of Japan , the club announced on February 2, 2015 that the contractual relationship with Forlán would continue until July 31, 2015. In the J2 League he was used in 16 second division games and scored ten goals. On June 8, 2015, he announced that he would not extend his expiring contract with the Japanese club and would therefore not continue his involvement there. He was then officially adopted on June 21, 2015 after the game against Tokushima Vortis .
Club Atlético Peñarol
After weeks of reports in the press about the upcoming commitment by Club Atlético Peñarol , the club finally officially introduced him as a new player on July 10, 2015. He signed a contract until December 31, 2016. On August 16, 2015, he made his debut with the Aurinegros on the 1st matchday of the 2015/16 season in a 3-0 away win over Club Atlético Cerro . This also represented his first division debut in the Uruguayan Primera División . In the 2015/16 season he won the Apertura 2015 and the championship title with the team and played 31 games (eight goals) in the top Uruguayan division and three encounters (no goal) in the Copa Libertadores 2016 . He then announced his departure at the end of the season.
Mumbai City FC
On August 13, 2016, Forlán announced that he would play for the Alexandre Guimarães- coached side of the Indian club Mumbai City FC from September to December 2016 . He played twelve league games with the Indians and scored five goals.
Kitchee SC
After being without a club for over a year, Forlán announced on January 4, 2018 that he would join the Kitchee SC in the Hong Kong Premier League . In August 2019, he ended his playing career at the age of 40.
National team
Forlán took part with the Uruguayan U-20 national team at the U-20 World Cup in Nigeria 1999 , where they finished fourth. His teammates included Ernesto Chevantón and Diego Pérez . He was also a member of the squad trained by Víctor Púa at the U-20 South American Championship of the same year in Mar del Plata .
In 2002 Forlán made his debut in the Uruguayan senior team in the only game so far against Saudi Arabia and immediately scored his first international goal (final score 2: 3). His first major tournament was the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea, in which Uruguay was eliminated in the preliminary round and Forlán was only used in the 3: 3 against Senegal . In 2004 he took part in the Copa America in Peru, where Uruguay lost to Brazil in the semifinals on penalties. In the game he won for third place, he was not used.
In qualifying for the 2006 World Cup, Forlán briefly resigned from the national team that Jorge Fossati was in charge of at the time . Uruguay did not qualify for the 2006 World Cup, as they lost in the intercontinental playoff games against Australia on penalties after both teams had won 1-0. In 2007 he took part in the Copa America in Venezuela, where he lost 3-1 to Mexico in the game for third place .
In qualifying for the World Cup in South Africa , he scored seven goals and thus contributed to the successful qualification. As the deputy captain of the Uruguayan national team, Forlán also played at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. With his team he reached fourth place and scored five goals over the course of the tournament. He was voted the best player of the World Cup , ahead of Wesley Sneijder from the Netherlands and David Villa from Spain , and was awarded the Golden Ball .
On July 9, 2011, he played his 78th international match against Chile at the 2011 Copa America and set Rodolfo Rodríguez's record . On July 13, 2011, he beat the record in the last group game against Mexico and has been Uruguay's sole record holder ever since. On July 24, 2011, he won the Copa America for the first time , which his grandfather as a coach and his father as a player had won in 1967. In the final against Paraguay he scored two goals, with which he scored a total of 31 international goals, setting the 81-year-old record set by Héctor Scarone . On October 11, 2011, he scored in the World Cup qualifier in Paraguay for the 32nd time in the national team jersey, making him the sole record holder at that time.
In the Confed Cup game against Nigeria , he played his hundredth international match. He scored the 2-1 goal in the 51st minute and became Uruguay's sole record scorer again with 34 international goals - and one goal ahead of his teammate Luis Suárez , who had meanwhile equaled Forláns' record mark. In the following game against Tahiti, in which Óscar Tabarez spared the regular players for the semifinals, Forlán was not used. Suárez came on in the 69th minute and scored two more goals, making Suárez the sole top scorer. In the semi-final against Brazil he had the chance to draw level with Suárez with a penalty, but his former team-mate at Inter Milan Júlio César was able to save the penalty. Even in the penalty shoot-out, which had to decide the game for third place against Italy, he could not convert his penalty. Since the Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon was also able to save two more penalties, while the Uruguayan goalkeeper could only save one, Uruguay had to be content with fourth place, as in 1997.
On August 14, 2013, he scored the first two goals in the 4-2 win against Japan in the 26th and 28th minute, making him the sole record scorer again. Luis Suárez also scored in the 52nd minute and drew level with Forlán. Since the game against Peru on September 6, 2013, however, Suárez has taken the lead in the top scorer list with two goals.
At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil , Forlán was again part of the Uruguayan squad. He completed 112 international matches and scored 36 international goals. His last national team appearance was on June 28, 2014.
On March 12, 2015, he announced his resignation from the national team.
