Previous model: Prince Sedan
Successor: Nissan GT-R

The Nissan Skyline , initially Thunderbird Skyline , is a mid-range vehicle from Nissan and has been in production since 1957.

In Germany, the Skyline was initially available in the body variants sedan and coupé (until 1975) as the Datsun LDK-GT 121 from 1973 . From the model change in 1978, it was only sold as a coupé under the name Datsun Skyline until 1981.

Model history

The Skyline was originally designed and built by the independent Japanese manufacturer Prince and joined the Nissan program with the acquisition of Prince by Nissan. While the group offered its smaller models under the brand name Datsun until 1983, the Skyline and some other models of the group ( Nissan Gloria , Nissan President ) always carried the brand name Nissan.

The first models were simple everyday limousines for everyone. In 1969 a sports version called Skyline 2000 GT-R was presented for the first time (in the C10 series), followed by its coupé version in 1971. Both were powered by a 118 kW (160 hp) six-cylinder naturally aspirated engine with a displacement of two liters. The appearance of the successor (C110) introduced in 1972 was reminiscent of American muscle cars of that time. As a result of the oil crisis , however, there were almost no buyers for the GT-R, so that Nissan stopped production of this model just a few months later. After that, Nissan presented a new skyline generation about every four years, always with rear-wheel drive and for a long time with the typical four round rear lights. At the end of the 1980s, the GT-R made its comeback as a high-performance Skyline top model with all-wheel drive.

Prince Skyline Sport with Michelotti body

In April 1957 Prince presented the Skyline, a four-door sedan with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine with overhead valves and an output of 60 hp in the basic and deluxe version; the model code was ALSI-1. In February 1958, Prince showed the Gloria, derived from the Skyline, with 83 hp. From October 1958, the output of the smaller four-cylinder was increased to 70 hp. From February 1959, the deluxe version had double headlights, and from October also the basic model. In the fall of 1959, the Italian coachbuilder Michelotti showed a Skyline Coupé, which was subsequently mass-produced in small numbers. From autumn 1961, the Skyline 1900 in basic and deluxe versions added to the model range, and from April 1962 the Skyline Sport, which is considered the first Japanese sports car, was available as a coupé and convertible. The sport cost 185,000 yen, the deluxe sedan 120,000 yen. In September 1962, the Skyline Super was presented with a 1.9-liter four-cylinder that could deliver a maximum of 67 kW (91 hp). A total of 33,759 copies of the first Skyline were made.

Based on the Skyline, Prince also produced station wagon and pick-up versions under the name Prince Skyway .

In September 1963 a completely new Skyline appeared as a four-door sedan and station wagon with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine and a self-supporting body. The following month, the Skyline 1900 Sprint, a two-door coupé, was presented.

For participation in the 2nd Japanese GT Grand Prix in May 1964, Prince developed a Skyline variant with the more powerful two-liter straight-six of the Gloria Super 6; for this, the front end of the Skyline had to be lengthened by 20 centimeters. 100 copies of this first racing skyline were produced for homologation purposes. In the Grand Prix itself, the skyline had to admit defeat to a Porsche 904 , but it took second to sixth place.

After the merger with Nissan in August 1966, the Skyline was sold under the brand name Nissan Prince Skyline. In October 1966 the Skyline received a facelift with a modified radiator grille; from August 1967 a new four-cylinder with 88 hp was installed. A 2000 GT then cost 86,000 yen.

A total of 114,238 copies of the second generation Skyline were produced.

In August 1968 Nissan presented the third generation Skyline, again with a 1.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine. The Skyline 1500 was available as a Family Deluxe with a front three-seat bench and three-speed gearbox with steering wheel shift or as a Touring Deluxe with individual seats, four-speed gearbox and center shift. In October 1968 the new Skyline GT appeared with a two-liter in-line six-cylinder with an overhead camshaft and rear trailing arm rear axle (the basic version had a rigid axle).

Also in October 1968, Nissan showed the first Skyline GT-R as a study at the Tokyo Motor Show , which went into series production in February of the following year under the type number PGC10, powered by an in-line six-cylinder with two overhead camshafts and 118 kW (160 hp) .

At the same time the Skyline GT went into series production, which could be recognized by the decorative beading typical of later Skyline generations in the area of the rear fenders; Furthermore, new 1.8-liter four-cylinder units were available for the Skyline. A facelift followed in October 1969, and the radiator grille was made in one piece from then on. From October 1970 a two-door hardtop coupé on a wheelbase shortened by 70 mm was available in the versions 1800, 2000 GT and 2000 GT-R.

A total of 310,447 copies of the third generation Skyline were built, including 1945 GT-R.

The fourth generation of the Skyline was available in September 1972. Four-door sedans, two-door hardtop coupés and station wagons / delivery vans were offered. The wheelbase and front end of sedans and coupes with six cylinders were extended. The decorative edge on the rear fenders was strongly emphasized in the design, and the six-cylinder version GC110 was the first skyline with the typical four round rear lights. In-line four-cylinder engines with overhead camshafts with 1.6, 1.8 or 2 liters displacement were available, as well as a two-liter in-line six-cylinder in the GT; Nissan fitted the export model Datsun 240K with a 2.4-liter six-cylinder. The four-cylinder versions had a rigid axle at the rear, the six-cylinder a trailing arm axle.

In September 1972 Nissan presented the latest 2000 GT-R as a sedan, again equipped with the 160 hp two-liter six-cylinder, followed by the corresponding hardtop coupé in January 1973. Both versions were taken out of the program in March 1973; by then 197 pieces should have been created. The next GT-R should not be available again until 1989 based on the Skyline R32.

From May 1975 there were new 1.6- and 1.8-liter four-cylinder, from October a two-liter four-cylinder with gasoline injection in the 2000 GTX-E and a smaller facelift.

In Germany, this skyline was offered as a sedan under the name Datsun 240K-GT from June 1973 to July 1978 and as a coupé until 1975. The 2.37-liter in-line six-cylinder, taken over from the Datsun 240Z , was throttled here to 83 kW (113 DIN PS). The sedan initially cost DM 12,990  . In 1977 the price was DM 14,990. The vehicle was equipped with a five-speed gearbox, independent suspension with MacPherson struts and a stabilizer on the front axle, as well as a rear trailing arm axle with gas pressure shock absorbers . The maximum speed is specified with 180 km / h.

A total of 670,562 units of the C110 were sold, including 197 GT-R.

In 1977 the C110 was replaced by the C210. The C210 was the first Skyline to be available with a turbo engine (L20ET) and was built until 1981 (after the facelift: C211).

As with its predecessor, the range offered sedans, hardtop coupé and station wagons, the six-cylinder units again had a longer wheelbase. The engines were a 1.6-liter four-cylinder (L16S), several 1.8-liter four-cylinders (L18S and L18E), a 115-hp two-liter in-line six-cylinder (L20S) and a 130 hp variant of the same ( L24E) in the program. The grill grilles and taillights were styled differently for the GT and TI equipment levels. The top models GT-E S and TI-E S had disc brakes on all wheels, rear window wipers and headlight cleaning system as standard. Among them were the versions GT-E L / TI-E L and GT-E X / TI-E X.

A facelift followed in July 1979 (model C211); the GT received rectangular headlights, the TI continued to have round double headlights, the grille was shaped differently. In April 1980, the 107 kW (145 hp) version of the two-liter six-cylinder with a turbocharger appeared .

From June 1980 a 2.8 liter diesel six-cylinder (type LD28) was available.

From October 1978 to July 1981, the top-of-the-line coupé was also sold in Germany under the name Datsun Skyline . The 2.4-liter in-line six-cylinder with Bosch L-Jetronic developed 96 kW (130 hp) and could be combined with a five-speed gearbox or a three-speed automatic. The vehicle, which was very extensively equipped at the time, cost around DM 18,940 (DM 23,400 with full equipment) less than an Opel Monza 3.0 E. Today, only a few vehicles of the Datsun Skyline have survived and are in firm hands.

Nissan produced a total of 539,727 units of the C210 / 211.

In August 1981, the sixth generation Skyline made its debut as a four-door notchback sedan, five-door hatchback, coupe and station wagon. The wheelbases of the four- and six-cylinder versions no longer differed. The engines were a 1.8-liter four-cylinder (type Z18E), a two-liter six-cylinder without (L20E) or with a turbocharger (L20ET, 140 hp), a two-liter four-cylinder with two overhead camshafts, type FJ20E, with 110 kW (150 PS), a two-liter turbo (FJ20ET), 140–151 kW (190–205 PS), from February 1983 a 2.8-liter in-line six-cylinder and a diesel six-cylinder of the same displacement with 62 kW (84 PS).

In 1981 the first electronically adjustable shock absorbers were introduced in the Nissan Skyline R30 .

A facelift followed in August 1983 with stronger bumpers and other detail changes. In November 1983, for the 50th birthday of Nissan, an anniversary model based on the Skyline RS-X Turbo Coupé with special equipment and an exclusive two-tone paintwork in gray / red was released.

From the beginning of 1984, the Skyline 2000 Turbo RS-X with 151 kW (205 PS) developing turbo two-liter supplemented the model range.

By August 1985, a total of 406,432 pieces of the Skyline R30 had been produced; the R30 station wagon remained in production until 1990.

In August 1985 Nissan launched the seventh generation Skyline, again as a four-door sedan and coupe; the extended previous version served as a station wagon, the five-door hatchback sedan was omitted. In the basic model, a 1.8-liter four-cylinder did its job again (type CA18, 74 kW 100 PS), there was also a two-liter in-line six-cylinder (RB20DE, 155 PS; as a turbo RB20DET, 180-190 PS) with two overhead camshafts and the 2.8 liter diesel (RD28). Some models were equipped with the new HICAS four-wheel steering.

In May 1986, the two-door coupés of the series called Skyline GTS appeared; in February 1987 the Nismo Skyline GTS Twin Cam 24v Turbo Coupé with sports equipment. From August 1987, the sedan versions carried the front section of the coupé models. At the same time, Nissan brought a GTS-R coupé limited to 800 pieces with a 210 hp two-liter six-cylinder turbo engine and a larger rear spoiler. The 1800 G and 1800 G Limited sedans were also new.

A total of 309,716 copies were made of the Skyline R31. In addition, the skyline in Australia was built together with the better equipped sister model Nissan Pintara . But the skyline also rolled off the production line in South Africa.

Skyline GT-R R33

Nissan Skyline R33 GT-R

The GT-R has been further developed. It had the well-known engine of the R32 GT-R, this was also modified and generated an output of around 220 kW. According to the voluntary self-restraint of the Japanese manufacturers at the time, a car should not exceed the output of 206 kW (280 PS), so the engine was throttled by the control unit. The all-wheel steering HICAS has also been improved and renamed Super-HICAS. The difference between the two systems was the control method. While the "normal" HICAS was still operated hydropneumatically, the Super-HICAS now worked electronically. As a result, it responded more gently and evenly. Despite these improvements, the R33 GT-R was not as positively received as its predecessor. Even a four-door special version of the GT-R could not help. The significantly longer wheelbase impaired maneuverability and the brake discs could burst under high loads.

In May 1998, the R34 series came onto the market with a shorter wheelbase than its predecessor. The GT, with a 147 kW (200 hp) six-cylinder naturally aspirated engine, offered a sedan-like space for the costs of a mid-range sedan despite the coupe design. The next larger model was the GT-T. Visually, it only stood out from the GT because of the larger rims. On the other hand, a lot more happened on the engine; now it developed 206 kW (280 hp) from the same engine, which now also had a turbo. The GT-T could again be ordered as a coupé or a sedan and is the successor to the Skyline R33 GTS-T. The weaker engine versions GT and GT-T, as well as GTS-T had to make do with rear-wheel drive. All-wheel drive was reserved for the GT-R introduced in 1999.

By 2002, Nissan had sold a total of 64,623 of the Skyline R34, of which 11,344 were GT-R models.

Skyline GT-R R34

Nissan Skyline (R34) GT-R M-Spec Nür

The GT-R introduced in 1999 was, like the new 2.5-liter turbo engine in the GT-T, specified with 206 kW (280 hp), since the Japanese car manufacturers have agreed on voluntary self-restraint. The actual maximum power was determined in free power measurements with over 220 kW (299 PS). The engine was taken over from the predecessor R33 GT-R. The Super-HICAS was adopted from the R33 GT-R and only slightly improved. The R34 GT-R was designed in response to its own ancestor, the R32 GT-R.

Some of the data was displayed on a 10.5-inch TFT monitor on the center console. This monitor was a novelty to the otherwise common analog instruments. All sorts of technical details can be displayed on the liquid crystal screen, such as B. Torque distribution between the front and rear axles, g-forces and pedal position, boost pressure, oil pressure, etc.

2002 was the end of production of the GT-R. In 2003, the Japanese government introduced new exhaust emission limits that the RB26DETT engine, a design from the 1980s, no longer met. In order to celebrate the demise of this popular engine, the anniversary models GT-R V-spec II Nür and GT-R M-spec Nür were introduced. The "Nür" in the name was reminiscent of the Nürburgring. The special thing about the Nür models was the RB26DETT engine in the N1 motorsport version. The edition was limited to a total of 1000 copies, of which 250 were the more luxurious M-spec models with leather upholstery and softer chassis settings and 750 V-spec II models.

Differences between the GT-R equipment variants
  • R34 GT-R - The basic version
  • R34 GT-R V-Spec - improved GTR version with an ATTESA E-TS Pro all-wheel drive system and diffuser. Chassis and differential have also been changed. From and including the V-Spec level, the models have been weight-optimized at the factory. Improved brakes were also used.
  • R34 GT-R V-Spec II - later version of the V-Spec (late 2000) with CFRP engine hood and air inlet. Changed interior (pedals, color of the interior), brake discs from the N1 model on the rear axle. The orange front indicators were replaced by clear ones.
  • R34 GT-R M-Spec - the "comfortable" version with a softer chassis, special paint and leather.
  • R34 GT-R N1 - is the racing version of the GT-R with reinforced engine parts (oil and water pump, turbos). The N1 also has no audio or air conditioning and no rear window wiper. Like the V-Spec II, the N1 has a bonnet made of CFRP.
  • R34 GT-R V-Spec II Nür - limited special edition of the V-Spec II (2002) with the engine of the N1 (750 copies)
  • R34 GT-R M-Spec Nür - limited special edition of the M-Spec with N1 engine (250 copies)
  • Nismo 400R - based on the GT-R 33 V-Spec 96, it is the most potent GT-R33 version. RBX-GT2 400PS 6800RPM ATTESA-ETS and Super-HICAS.
Records and anecdotes
  • When Nissan launched a special series (V-Spec II Nür & M-Spec Nür) in August 2002 at the end of production of the 10th generation, these last 300 cars were sold via the Internet within two hours. Thereupon another 700 pieces were added and it took two days to sell all of them.
  • The Japanese tuning company "Blitz" tried to break the official speed record on public roads for tuned production sports cars with a GT-R with an output of around 735 kW (1000 PS). The test drive had to be stopped at 341 km / h because parts of the body came loose.
  • In the Japanese skylines of the professional drag scene, engine outputs of over 1000 hp are not uncommon.
  • A GT-R of the Heat Treatments Racing Team built in New Zealand is the fastest skyline in the world on the quarter mile with a time of 7.57 seconds and a top speed of 306 km / h.
  • A new acceleration record of 0-300 km / h was set by the Briton Keith Cowie with an extremely tuned Skyline R32 GT-R. In Ten of the Best , a competition among model-specific car clubs, which register the ten best cars for this event and compete against each other in the disciplines of drag, handling and top speed, he needed a time of 12.47 seconds to move from Accelerate to a standstill to 300 km / h (measured with Datron GPS). This makes it almost five seconds faster than what is currently the world's most powerful production sports car ( Bugatti Veyron with 736 kW / 1001 PS). The hundred mark was reached after 2.54 seconds.
  • The motorsport department of Nissan (Nismo) produced the last series of Skylines GT-R R34s in 2005. Since there were no longer any brand new GT-Rs of this series, 20 used cars with as few kilometers as possible were purchased (up to 30,000 km). For this purpose, the corresponding car has been dismantled down to the basic structure and the car has been completely revised. The cars cost $ 160,000 per vehicle. The engine was bored out to 2.8 liters displacement, got larger turbochargers and now delivers 373 kW (507 hp). 460 kW would be possible, but this would no longer allow legal emissions to be complied with. The brakes were upgraded (six-piston brake calipers at the front), a two-disc clutch installed, new aerodynamic parts adapted (front apron, side skirts, fenders, hood, etc.) and a three-way adjustable US $ 20,000 Sachs chassis installed, plus body components made of CFRP and other racing parts. The occasion for this special series was the 20th anniversary of Nismo ( NIS san MO torsports).

In 2001 the new generation of the Skyline followed, based on the Nissan 350Z . A sedan and a coupé were presented. The new Skyline was only available with a V6 engine (2.5, 3.0, 3.5 l) from which the name of the vehicle can be derived (e.g. 3.0-liter engine = Nissan Skyline 300 GT). The newly introduced V35 was received with a shock by the Skyline fan base. The new, gentler coupé trains did not fit into the image of the otherwise angular Skyline family. The outrage that Nissan was not planning a GT-R model of the V35 was even greater. The top model of the V35, the Skyline 350 GT (Coupé) was not given a special name. It is powered by the 3.5 liter V6 engine (VQ35DE) of the 350Z.

In the USA the Skyline 350 GT was sold as a left-hand drive under the name Infiniti G35 .

Nissan GT-R (R35)

The Nissan GT-R

The successor to the Nissan Skyline GT-R (R34) is the Nissan GT-R , which has been produced since 2008 . The name Skyline is no longer used by Nissan from the R35 model. The series GT-R was preceded by a study of the same name shown at the Tokyo Motor Show at the end of 2001 and a prototype at the end of 2005. In contrast to its predecessors, the GT-R is for the first time not only marketed in individual markets such as Japan and Great Britain, but also in countries with left-hand drive . The car celebrated its premiere at the Tokyo Motor Show 2007. The successor to the Skyline GT-R (R34) is no longer a descendant of the Skyline series, but an independent model within the Nissan product range. Like its predecessor models, the GT-R has all-wheel drive, but with new, patented technology. The old RB26DETT was replaced by the VR38DETT, a twin-turbo engine with a 3.81 liter displacement that generates an output of 357 kW (485 hp). Performance increases (beyond 500 hp) are no problem here either.

All-wheel drive / HICAS

The Nissan Skyline (GT-R models) has the ATTESA-ETS (Advanced Total Traction Engineering System for All - Electronic Torque Split) called all - wheel drive and the steering rear axle HICAS or Super-HICAS to ensure the front-heavy weight distribution (57:43) and to compensate for the associated understeer. What makes this all-wheel drive so unique is the interaction of the all-wheel steering with the variable, electronically controlled torque distribution.

The ATTESA system was already used in the predecessors (BNR-32 / BCNR-33) of the current Skyline GT-R (BNR-34) and has been thoroughly revised in its latest version, but this does not change the basic principle, it works in a similar way like an ESP .

While ESP brakes the wheels, the ATTESA system distributes the power electronically / hydraulically to all four wheels via two differentials called A-LSD * (normally 100% at the rear, variable with slip). Furthermore, the system can address the two rear wheels individually in order to bring the car into a controlled oversteering driving condition. In this way the GT-R is relieved of the tendency to understeer in long, fast corners.

The system has another little gimmick. In principle, the Skyline GT-R is a rear-wheel drive vehicle with all-wheel drive option. When you start the traffic light, for example, all the power goes backwards, after which the rear wheels will spin a little (which, however, is intentional and not necessarily bad). The carriage is set in a slight forward motion. Only now does all-wheel drive come into play.

With all-wheel drive without or with a 100% locked center differential, there is a risk that the slip on the tires will not be sufficient to compensate for the difference in speed between the axles and that the power-transmitting parts will be braced against each other and thus stressed. The driving behavior with the ATTESA system can be described as extremely agile, despite the very high weight of more than 1560 kg. A positive side effect of the overall system is the neutralization of cross winds, which the system recognizes and automatically compensates for by adjusting the rear wheel steering angle. The entire process of force distribution can also be followed via the built-in TFT monitor in the dashboard .

The special all-wheel drive is one of the main reasons why the Skyline GTR has become so popular in the drag racing and tuning scene.

Nissan Skyline in Germany

There are used skylines imported from Japan in Germany . However, these are very rare and right-hand drive. Service is provided by some Nissan dealerships . Speedometer conversions and changes to the electronics are popular, as the Japanese version is limited to 180 km / h due to the voluntary self-restraint of the Japanese automotive industry and the speedometer only goes up to 180 km / h. The registration process in Germany requires an individual acceptance according to Paragraph 21 StVZO, for this some adjustments to the vehicle are necessary. However, this is often done by the importers , who also carry out the appropriate conversion work, for example on the vehicle lighting.
