James "Jim" Turner (born February 6, 1946 in Fort Lewis , Washington ) is an American politician . Between 1997 and 2005 he represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jim Turner attended Crockett High School in Texas and then studied law at the University of Texas in Austin until 1971 . Between 1970 and 1978 he served first actively and then as a member of the reserves in the United States Army . At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . From 1981 to 1984 he was an MP in the Texas House of Representatives . After that he was a member of the Advisory Board of the Governor of Texas until 1985 . Between 1989 and 1991 Turner was Mayor of Crockett City ; from 1991 to 1997 he was a member of the Texas Senate .

In the 1996 congressional election , Turner was elected to the House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the second constituency of Texas , where he succeeded Charlie Wilson on January 3, 1997 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress until January 3, 2005 . He was temporarily a member of the Armed Forces Committee and the Committee on Homeland Security . During his time as a congressman, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan fell . In 2004 Turner renounced another candidacy.

In 2006 Jim Turner was briefly interviewed as a candidate for governor of Texas and then for a candidacy for the US Senate . Since 2005 he has been working for a large law firm in the federal capital Washington. He has been married since 1970 and has two children.
