Nikita Igorewitsch Kutscherow ( Russian: Никита Игоревич Кучеров ; English transcription: Nikita Igorevich Kucherov ; born June 17, 1993 in Maikop ) is a Russian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning in the National Hockey League since 2013 . The right winger is considered one of the best attackers in the league and won the Art Ross Trophy as top scorer as well as the Hart Memorial Trophy and the Ted Lindsay Award as most valuable player in the NHL in the 2018/19 season .
Career
Nikita Kutscherow began his career as an ice hockey player in the youth department of the HK CSKA Moscow , for whose junior team Krasnaja Armija Moscow he played for the first time in the 2009/10 season in the newly founded multinational youth league Molodjoschnaja Chokkeinaja Liga . He was then selected in the third round of the KHL Junior Draft 2010 as the 60th player from his own club CSKA Moscow, as this was not one of the players that the club itself could exclude from the draft, but the club wanted to keep the player. In the 2010/11 season , the winger made his debut for the professional team of HK CSKA Moscow in the Continental Hockey League , in which he was two assists in nine games. With the junior team Krasnaja Armija he won the Kharlamov Cup , the championship title of the MHL, in whose All-Star Game he was also allowed to participate. He was also selected in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft in the second round as the 58th player of the Tampa Bay Lightning . In July 2012, his current contract was canceled by the CSKA and Kutscherow moved to North America to the Remparts de Québec from the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec .
On November 25, 2013, Kucherov made his debut in the NHL and came straight with the first shot to his first NHL goal.
In the 2014/15 season, he and Max Pacioretty from the Canadiens de Montréal won the NHL Plus / Minus Award, which is not officially awarded .
In October 2016, Kucherov signed a new three-year contract in Tampa, which earned him an average annual salary of approximately $ 4.7 million. In the subsequent 2016/17 season, the attacker achieved by far his best personal statistic with 40 goals and 45 assists and was among the top five scorers in the league. A little later he was elected to the NHL Second All-Star Team as a result. He increased this performance again in the 2017/18 season by reaching the 100 point mark for the first time and taking third place on the scorer list . As a result, he was elected to the NHL First All-Star Team at the end of the season . The Russian then signed a new eight-year contract in Tampa in July 2018, which should earn him an average annual salary of $ 9.5 million from the start of the 2019/20 season.
Kutscherow continued his ascent in the 2018/19 season, recording 128 points, leading the entire NHL and as a result received the Art Ross Trophy . This represented the best personal statistic in over 20 years, when Mario Lemieux had achieved 161 points in the 1995/96 season , while he also improved the best value of his Russian compatriots, which had previously been set by Alexander Mogilny (127 points; 1992/93 season ). Meanwhile, his 87 assists meant a high among wingers, where he drew level with Jaromír Jágr (1995/96 season). He also set new franchise records for the Lightning in both statistics . At the end of the season he was honored for these achievements with the Hart Memorial Trophy and the Ted Lindsay Award as most valuable player in the NHL. In addition, he was considered in the NHL First All-Star Team .
International
For Russia , Kutscherow took part in the U18 World Junior Championship in 2011 , where he won the bronze medal with his team. With eleven goals and ten assists in seven games, he was the top scorer and top scorer of the tournament and was also voted its best striker.
In the senior sector, he made his debut at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 , where he finished fourth with the team.
