qualification

Qualification criteria

386 athletes will take part in the competitions. 138 women and 214 men qualify directly via the world rankings, 14 athletes from the host NOK , one in each weight class, are automatically eligible to start. The International Judo Federation (IJF) will award a total of 20 starting places by invitation after the qualification phase. Each NOK may only provide one athlete per weight class.

For women, the first 14 athletes of the adjusted world rankings were directly qualified in each weight class, for men the first 22nd qualified. The other quota places were assigned from a continental perspective, for which a ranking is created on the basis of the adjusted world ranking list. Africa will get 24, Europe 25, Asia 20, Oceania ten and America 21 starting places. The key date for the world rankings was May 1, 2012.

Born in Kosovo, Majlinda Kelmendi competed in Judo for Albania after the IOC rejected a planned participation for Kosovo and as an Independent Olympic participant . As an independent Olympic participant, Reginald de Windt from Curaçao , who had qualified in the weight class up to 81 kg, competed. The NOK of the Netherlands Antilles lost its recognition by the IOC after the island association was dissolved.

A total of 116 NOKs were able to qualify for the Olympic competitions via the world rankings. Another 17 NOKs got a starting place by invitation in June 2012. American Samoa, Honduras, Paraguay, Aruba, Belize, Monaco, Djibouti, Guyana, Rwanda, Burundi, Liberia, Togo, Benin, Myanmar, Lebanon, Cambodia and Afghanistan benefited from this.
