The TV show Big Brother is an internationally successful and highly controversial TV broadcast format broadcast in almost 70 countries . It was first broadcast in the Netherlands in 1999 . The Dutch company Endemol Entertainment owns the rights to the locally produced show . In Germany , Big Brother was broadcast on the private broadcaster RTL II and has been premiered since the fifth season and from the tenth season on Sky Deutschland (formerly Premiere) and Clipfish as a 24-hour live stream that broadcasts images from the Big- Brother House broadcasts, broadcast. After the end of the eleventh season in 2011, the format was initially no longer produced in Germany. 2013 started Sat.1 with Celebrity Big Brother a separate branch. In 2015 there was a new regular season without celebrities at sixx , which, like the sixth season , was hosted by Jochen Bendel in 2005 and 2006 . In 2020, a new season Big Brother was broadcast on Sat.1 for the 20th anniversary , which, like the previous Celebrity Big Brother seasons , was moderated by Jochen Schropp .
concept
In the concept of the program, which varies slightly from country to country, a group of people sometimes lives for several months in a television studio set up as a living environment (“container”). The daily routine is structured by the production company and loosened up by predetermined competitions and games. Communication with the participants takes place via the computer voice "Big Brother". The lives of the participants are recorded around the clock by television cameras and microphones and regularly broadcast live or as a compilation of “highlights” on television . At the end of the broadcast, the project winner of a prize money - subject to income tax in Germany - is determined. It is the person who is the last to leave the container.
The name Big Brother
The name Big Brother is derived from George Orwell's 1949 dystopian science fiction novel 1984 . In this gloomy future vision a totalitarian ruled society is described, which is under constant surveillance by the big brother (English: "Big Brother"). Surveillance cameras for video surveillance (so-called "televisors" or in more recent translations "tele screens "), television receivers with large screens and integrated microphones for receiving commands are present everywhere, including in living rooms, and create ubiquitous, almost complete monitoring of individuals. Privacy no longer exists.
The title of the broadcast refers to this seamless video surveillance and the loss of privacy. Although the name of the program corresponds to the address of the ruler from Orwell's novel, it does not contain any political orientation of its own .
Big Brother in Germany
The show has been produced in 13 seasons so far. The first season ran in Germany in 2000. In 2005, the sixth season started, which should be considered endless, but was discontinued on February 26, 2006 due to too low audience figures. The eighth season began on January 7, 2008. This was followed on December 8, 2009 by the ninth season. The broadcast of the tenth season ended on August 10, 2010 and on May 2, 2011 the eleventh season began. After a four-year hiatus, Big Brother made his comeback on Sixx. The season began on September 22, 2015 and ended on December 22, 2015. At 92 days, this season was the shortest. After another four-year break, a new season of 100 days was broadcast on Sat.1 for the 20th anniversary of the show.
In the break between the sixth and seventh season, Premiere broadcast a format clone called Der Container Exklusiv from February 26, 2006 to June 5, 2006 , also produced by Endemol. This show was hosted by Christian Möllmann , known from the second season.

1st season
Every two weeks, each resident nominates two candidates who, in his opinion, have to leave the Big Brother house. He pronounces these nominations isolated from the other residents in a special room in front of the television viewers. The television audience then decides by vote which of the nominated residents must go. This continues until there are only three candidates left. Then the viewers rate the three remaining candidates. The winner receives the prize money. In addition, weekly and daily tasks can be solved which, if successful, help the residents to receive gifts in the form of music, food, etc. The season began on February 28 and ended after 102 days on June 9, 2000.
The candidates lived together in a residential container (153 m² living space) with a garden on the premises of the NOB Studios (now known as nobeo GmbH) in Hürth near Cologne . If a candidate leaves the house voluntarily, a replacement candidate moves in for him. The show was broadcast by RTL II . The prize money was 250,000 DM . This season's theme song was Leb by The 3rd Generation .
Percy Hoven moderated the first season, he was supported by Thorsten Wember. Outside reporter was Sophie Rosentreter .

2nd season
After around 15,000 candidates had applied in the first season, there were already over 70,000 for the 106-day second season - it began on September 16 and ended on New Year's Eve 2000. After the telephone auditions, the camera auditions took place in five major German cities. All applicants who were shortlisted had to take part in a psychological test. A “distinctive” mix of participants should follow on from the success of the first season. Motto: "Away from sitting on the couch to more intrigues, crazier characters and stricter rules!" The concept differs only slightly from that of the first season. Every two weeks, each resident nominates two candidates who, in their opinion, must leave the Big Brother house, stating reasons. He pronounces these nominations isolated from the other residents in a special room live in front of the television viewers (RTL). The television audience then decides by telephone vote which of the nominated residents has to leave the following week. This procedure continues until there are only three candidates left. Then the viewers rate the three remaining candidates. The winner receives the prize money. During the entire season, additional weekly and daily tasks must be solved, which, if successful, help the residents to receive gifts in the form of additional budget, music, food, etc.
What is new in the second season is that the candidates have to get by “back to basic”, i.e. without guaranteed food rations, warm water or cosmetics, or have to work out these “extras”.
The candidates lived together in a residential container (153 m² living space) with a garden on the strictly guarded premises of the NOB Studios in Hürth near Cologne , as in the first season. The daily shows were broadcast by RTL II , the nomination and extract shows on Saturday by RTL . The total prize money was 250,000 DM. For the first time, viewers were able to watch the living container around the clock via the single TV channel and via live stream on the Internet.
The title song of this season was Show me your face by Berger . In addition to the season, there was the daily night quiz (Big Brother - The Quiz) with Maike Tatzig , a morning call-in-show (Big Brother - Your Profit) and permanent contributions on almost all private TV channels. The advertising cooperations, for example with Pepsi, the Bild newspaper and other important advertising partners, made Big Brother in 2000 the media event that called many critics onto the scene and thus reinforced the success of seasons 1 and 2.
Oliver Geissen moderated the live broadcasts together with Gudrun Loeb. Outside reporter was Aleksandra Bechtel .

3rd season
The concept differs little from that of the first season. The third season started on January 27th. After 106 days this ended on May 12, 2001.
This season, however, there was something new: the "mole", which acted in the house on the orders of Big Brother and was supposed to prevent the daily or weekly tasks from being successfully solved. Its function remained a secret, but was discovered after a while. That mole was the resident Silvia.
The candidates lived together in a residential container (153 m² living space) with a garden on the premises of the NOB Studios in Hürth near Cologne . The show was broadcast by the broadcasters RTL and RTL II . This season, too, there was the night quiz with Maike Tatzig on RTL II (Big Brother - The Quiz) as well as a 3-minute chance to win 1,000 DM shortly before the current Big Brother episode (Big Brother - The Countdown) . The total prize money was 300,000 DM. The title song of this season was "Nur die Truth Counts" by Ayman & Naima .
The team of moderators was completely taken over from the last season and thus consisted of Oliver Geissen, Gudrun Loeb and Aleksandra Bechtel (external reporter).

4th season
The fourth season should be differentiated from the others. "The Battle" tried to promise less boredom and more tension. Instead of the old container there was a house with a luxurious and a barren area, which were separated from each other by a red cord. The residents were divided into teams and constantly had to compete against each other in order to live in the luxury area. These games were either played in the house, where the participants from both areas faced each other on the “red cord”, or on the specially created “battlefield”, a fenced-in sand and lawn area. The residents received the instructions for these matches and battles directly from the Matchmaster “Mac” ( Sven Steffensmeier , Creative Producer Endemol), who also acted as referee for the games.
The candidates lived together in a house with a garden on the grounds of the Coloneum in Cologne . The show was broadcast on RTL II , Tele 5 and MTV2 Pop . The prize money was 90,000 euros . This season's theme song was Everything Changes by Oli.P & Lukas.
The sole presenter was Aleksandra Bechtel in the 4th season . The season started on March 31st and ended after 99 days on July 7th, 2003.

5th season
The season lasted from March 2, 2004 to March 1 of the following year and thus took 365 days to complete. New rules now include an area for "survivors" (poor), "normal" and "rich".
The survivor's area is similar to staying at a campsite . You sleep in sleeping bags on sleeping mats . You will receive a small daily food ration, which consists mainly of raw vegetables and other foods in their natural state. The stove is an open stove that is fired with firewood that you have chopped yourself .
The realm of the normal represents the social middle class . In order to supplement their household budget, the residents have to solve so-called weekly tasks, for example making 1000 paper flowers or doing various brain teasers. The articles produced are mostly used by hospitals and children's institutions.
There is plenty in the realm of the rich. For example, there are items such as comfortable beds, luxurious bathtubs, flat screens and pools . The foods include champagne and salmon , among others . Personal trainers or hairdressers can also be ordered into the house. Every day residents of the normal team can be used for services such as cleaning and ironing for a fee.
After changing matches it is decided which team is allowed to change to which area. So the “Reich” team can live in the survivor area for several weeks and vice versa. Of course, it is also possible to switch to the "normal" area. There are also the challenges, called "Challenge". In these, a certain resident has to cope with a particularly difficult task alone, for example jumping from a flying helicopter into a three-meter-wide ring floating in the water. Depending on the outcome, the "Challenge" results in rewards or punishments. The “Matches” and “Challenges” were developed by Matchmaster “Mac” (Sven Steffensmeier, Creative Producer Endemol) and Matchmaster “Miss Mac” (Anna Pauli, Creative Producer Endemol) and carried out alternately.
In addition to Petra, who was originally also listed as a candidate, but is denied by Big Brother (who was seen by the premiere viewers), there was also a short visitor who entered the survivor area through a tree and a short meeting ( about 15 minutes) held at the residents, because he really wanted to take part in Big Brother.
At the beginning of the last two months of the season, the survivor team was disbanded and the people were moved to the Normal and Reich teams. The survivor area serves as the punishment area. These and other changes resulted from the ever decreasing number of residents in the house, since since this final phase only someone has been voted out every week instead of being replaced.
The show was broadcast by the broadcasters RTL II , Tele 5 , Premiere , MTV2 Pop and VIVA . The prize money was 1,000,000 euros . This season's theme song was Everything You Want from Lex .
Ruth Moschner led through the weekly decision shows and was supported by the ex-resident of the 2nd season, Christian Möllmann . Oli P. was an outside reporter.

6th season
Originally, the show wasn't meant to be limited in time. The broadcaster wanted to continue this season as long as the viewer's interest exists. On November 25, 2005, RTL II announced in a press release that the sixth season would not run "indefinitely" after all, but would end in a grand finale on February 26, 2006. The season began on March 1, 2005 and lasted 363 days.
The public applications took place in December 2004 in a number of major German cities. Contrary to initial rumors, no complete village with church and forest was simulated; it stayed with a (relatively large) container, which in some ways resembled a village. This “village” was in the immediate vicinity of the Big Brother V-House in Cologne-Ossendorf. Again, the candidates were divided into the rich (the “bosses”), the normal (the “assistants”) and the poor (the “Hiwis”) who live in their different living environments. The three areas were in houses 3, 7 and 9, each of which could be reached from the market square via separate house entrances. In addition, there are houses 11 and 13, in which matches are held, as well as the arena (analogous to the matchfield in season five). The residents can now earn their budget in work areas ( car workshop , farm with chicken , sheep , cow and pigsty as well as fashion studio ), because for the first time in a Big Brother season, residents earn a large part of their winnings themselves.
Every week, the three work areas had to achieve a weekly goal set by Big Brother on Mondays. On Fridays this “weekly task” was then presented in the individual areas and Big Brother decided the percentage of the weekly goal that was achieved. If the work team managed to achieve 100%, they would receive 1200 € (with percentages below that, pro rata), which were both earned for the jackpot and shared among the work team as wages. A work team consisted of a boss, two assistants and two student assistants. The respective boss was responsible for dividing the wages. BB gave the stipulation that the bosses have to pay € 500, the assistants € 250 and the student assistants € 100, but in the end the boss himself decided. In addition, he was allowed to award the "Golden Point" to the employee who made the most effort or showed the greatest amount of work every week. A student assistant was promoted to assistant status with two gold points, but the boss then had to demote an assistant to assistant student status. With the second golden point, an assistant received € 500 in his virtual account. If a boss did not achieve the specified weekly target three times (less than 85%), he would lose his position as a boss and automatically become a student assistant. The viewers then decided in a telephone voting which of the other team members was allowed to become boss.
These work areas were closed down to the farm in October 2005.
The fashion atelier has served as a Big Brother hotel since November 26, 2005. For a time, the former car workshop was home to the “Big Brother - Morning Show”, which ran from November 28, 2005 to December 30, 2005 in the mornings between 8:55 and 9:55 am on RTL II, instead of repeating the daily summary from The day before that was sent. The moderator was René Travnicek VIVA moderator (“Inscene”) and audience cheer (among other things for “Nur die Liebe geht”, “Schillerstrasse”), who was then replaced by the winner of the fifth season, Sascha Sirtl. In addition, the former car workshop for the wedding of resident Marco and ex-resident Bettina was converted into a wedding chapel and at the beginning of January into an ice rink.
Candidates from different areas have the opportunity to communicate with other villagers via an internal telephone . In a new arena (600 square meters) and two match rooms will also continue to matches held; there are also challenges again. A pub (Big Bar) and a fitness center are also available to residents .
The sixth season consisted of 11 residents on the move-in day March 1, 2005 (three bosses, four assistants, four student assistants), who were then increased to 15 residents in the following weeks.
In the beginning, nominations were based on the “challenger system”. The phase between nomination and expulsion of a resident lasts three weeks. In the first week the residents nominate three candidates. From these three candidates, the viewers, still in the same program, select two candidates by telephone, who will duel each other for the week. A week later, the spectators have to choose a person from these two candidates to face a challenger. The challenger will move into the nominee's area for a trial week. Now the nominee and the challenger have a week to convince the audience . In the third week, the audience will decide which of the two candidates will move out. Since the “challenger system” had not proven itself with the spectators, after three times the “normal” nomination system was used.
With this nomination system, the residents (one vote each) and the audience (two votes) put two of the residents on the nomination list. Before that, Big Brother announced which resident group can be nominated (women, men, work teams, house teams). These two nominees then faced the audience in a telephone voting for a week. Whoever received the most votes had to leave the village.
Each resident has a personal virtual BB account . The resident can top up this account through wages, matches and challenges. If he is selected by the audience, he will receive the amount in his BB account as a profit. However, if the resident leaves the village voluntarily, the amount earned up to that point is forfeited.
The jackpot accumulated by the residents through wages is played a total of four times. The viewers decide in a popularity vote who gets how much money in percentage terms. At the first jackpot on May 29, 2005, the most unpopular man (André) and the most unpopular woman (Shire) had to leave the village that same evening, while Parsifal and Bettina, the two most popular residents, got most of the jackpot transferred to their virtual account . At the second jackpot on September 4, 2005, even the four most unpopular residents (Martin, Frank, Benjamin, Nugy) had to leave the village immediately to make room for the celebrities who moved in, while Marco (1st place) and Bettina (2nd place) the two most popular residents were. At the third jackpot on December 4, 2005, Marco won again, who achieved more than twice as many percentage points as the second-placed Giuseppe, while Christopher, the least popular resident, had to leave the village.
In addition to the jackpot, € 250,000 will be drawn twice this season. The winner of the first € 250,000 was after several rounds, in which the audience voted by telephone voting, as well as the fakir week, Giuseppe. The second and final € 250,000 was awarded in the final show on February 26, 2006.
In this season, too, the Matchmaster “Mac” (Sven Steffensmeier, Creativ Producer Endemol) and “Miss Mac” (Anna Pauli, Creativ Producer Endemol) are responsible for the development, implementation and monitoring of the matches and challenges . The show will be broadcast by the channels RTL II , Tele 5 (up to and including September 21, 2005. Nachtfalke, then discontinued due to the channel's reorientation towards a feature film channel) and Premiere . This season's theme song is Your World .
Because the audience ratings in the target group of 14- to 49-year-old viewers were far below expectations, the show's producer made changes to the concept; According to media reports, an end to the season in August 2005 should have been discussed by those responsible at RTL II, but this was always denied by the authorities.
The Big Brother Hotel on the market square opened on November 26, 2005. The visitor can take part in village life like all other residents. But he also has the opportunity to retire to his luxury apartment and let it go really well. A Big Brother hotel service is available to him around the clock, which is taken over by the respective team in House 7. Just like in the entire Big Brother village, there are numerous cameras installed in the hotel room.
Resident Marco and ex-resident Bettina have been married since December 26, 2005. They tied the knot on a live show. The official wedding date was December 28, 2005 at the registry office in Bonn-Beuel. After that, Bettina was allowed to stay in the village until January 1st, 2006 in connection with the match “The Hidden Bride”.
At the grand finale on February 26, 2006 Michael prevailed against Thomas and won the second € 250,000.
Ruth Moschner initially continued moderation , but left on May 29, 2005. The previous outside reporter Oli P. took over her job from there. Jochen Bendel was co-moderator .

7th season
The 7th season ran from February 5 to July 2, 2007 and lasted 148 days. With the motto “Who are you really?” It should be a TV show similar to the first season.
The 7th season had a duration of 148 days and only one area. In the new Big Brother house, twelve candidates fought for up to € 250,000. The matches and challenges were taken over from the fifth and sixth seasons, which, in addition to penalties for rule violations, should have an impact on the winnings. The nominations were only similar in principle to the early seasons, which was often restricted by special regulations. Big Brother 7 was the first season in which no official rules of the game were communicated to the audience. The title song I see what you don't see was sung by Senta-Sofia Delliponti .
As in previous seasons, Endemol and RTL II stuck to the familiar broadcast schedule: the daily summary of the previous day started at 7:00 p.m. Only on the weekend was there a change during the season: unlike before, RTL II viewers could see a complete summary show of the weekend on Monday at 7:00 p.m., on Sunday the summary was canceled during the season. The weekly decision show was broadcast from a new studio in Cologne's Coloneum (Studio 50). This was seen on Mondays at 9:15 p.m. In addition, Premiere broadcast live around the clock every day.
As the winner of the season, the resident Michael received a bonus of 250,000 euros, whereby the producers of the format rounded up the amount reduced by matches, challenges and penalties.
This season, Charlotte Karlinder and Jürgen Milski (external reporters) moderated the event .

- ↑ As the Golden Resident of the Week , Oliver had the opportunity to nominate a third person who is automatically nominated. He chose Leon.
- ↑ As a new resident, Sinan had to name a person who was automatically nominated. He chose Sheila.
- ↑ Anna, Basti and Eddy did not have the right to vote. This was punishment for talking about nominations.
- ↑ Natasha could not be nominated as a new resident. Sheila was automatically nominated because she lost a soccer competition. Jeannine was automatically nominated for finishing last in a karaoke competition. Eddy received a nomination vote from the audience.
- ↑ Due to multiple rule violations, an unscheduled nomination took place, the person with the most votes had to leave the house immediately. As new residents, Doreen and Knubbel could not be chosen.
- ↑ The nominations were voluntary and only 2 residents cast a vote. As the Golden Resident of the Week , Basti had to name a second person who was automatically nominated. He chose Oliver.
- ↑ As a new resident, Janine could not be nominated. The nominations were based on the points awarded at the Eurovision Song Contest, each resident could give 9 points to his favorite roommate, 8 to his second favorite resident and so on, the least popular resident received one point. The 3 residents who received the fewest points in the end were nominated.
- ↑ The Golden occupants of the week could not be nominated Eddy. In addition, all female residents enjoyed immunity. The nominations were public. At the end of the nomination, Eddy had to determine whether Oliver or Basti should be nominated, both of which have received one vote to date. Eddy chose Oliver.
- ↑ As the last of the marathon match, Knubbel was automatically nominated. It was nominated by the mothers of the residents (and Knubbel's sister). Since the residents did not want to finish their last weekly task, the residents had to choose a person themselves who should also be on the list three days after the voting started. Eddy and Knubbel could not be elected because they were already nominated. Doreen received 3 votes and was thus nominated.
- ↑ The audience decided that Eddy could not be nominated.
- ↑ This week the audience nominated. The residents then had to decide which of the three most unpopular residents had to leave the house.
8th season
The eighth season began on January 7, 2008 and ended after 183 days on July 7, 2008. The winner received 250,000 euros in the end. A daily summary with the highlights of the previous day was broadcast on RTL II from Monday to Saturday at 7 p.m. The weekly live show started at 9:15 pm on Mondays. There was also a 24-hour live channel on Premiere , which could be subscribed to for € 5 a day or € 15 a month. Another media partner was 9Live this season . There was a daily “Best Of” Monday to Thursday at 11 pm and from 11:15 pm “Call Big Brother” (a call-in format all about Big Brother); On Fridays and Saturdays the broadcast dates were 9:15 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. respectively.
New to this season was the introduction of a 30-second delay on the Premiere Live Channel, which was introduced towards the end of the season. In addition, the house consisted of two floors for the first time.
Big Brother is integrated into the website as a central element on the sevenload media platform . Visitors to sevenload have the opportunity to take part in an online chat with resigned residents and to vote for applicants whose application videos can be seen on sevenload to move in. Videos of recordings from the Big Brother house can also be seen.
The season's theme song was Choose to Be Me by Sunrise Avenue .
The twelve residents, eight of whom moved in on January 7th, were again divided into two areas (poor and rich) this time. Changes between the areas were possible through competitions ("change matches"). The weekly task was only done by residents of the rich area - the poor received wages and punishment. This season there was also a pet again: a puffer fish, which the residents called "Dori" and whose aquarium stood on the border between the two areas.
During the nomination, each resident got one vote, with which he nominates another resident. The viewers were often able to protect a resident from being nominated by means of a telephone vote. The two or three residents with the most votes were on the nomination list for a week and could be protected or voted out by the audience. Newly moved residents were under "puppy protection" and were not allowed to be nominated.
On July 7th, Isi won the award of 250,000 euros with 54.6% of the votes.
Initially, Charlotte Karlinder took over the moderation again , but after the third show she went on maternity leave and was represented by Miriam Pielhau . Christian Naab represented Pielhau in the 9th live show, as this was canceled due to illness. External reporter was Jürgen Milski .

- ↑ Anki and Nadine could not be nominated as new residents. The house residents had to nominate the resident they no longer wanted in the house. The two residents with the most votes had to pretend to leave the house and could return the next day.
- ↑ The audience decided that only the rich team could be nominated (thus Alex, Anki, Isi, Marcel and Melly were protected).
- ↑ The audience gave Nadine two nominations. Dirk and Neila could not be nominated as new residents.
- ↑ Caro had immunity as a new resident. The audience also determined that Rebecca could not be nominated.
- ↑ The house residents (except for Jenny, as the new resident) were divided into pairs (Alex & Caro, Hassan & Nadine, Isi & Rebecca, Kevin & Marcel, Melly & Patrick). Each resident nominated individually. When a resident was nominated, his partner was automatically given a vote. After the nomination, Isi & Rebecca and Melly & Patrick each had 4 votes. 79.1% of the audience decided that Melly & Patrick should be nominated in the coming week.
- ↑ S. Marcel and Serafino could not be nominated as new residents. Nadine was also protected by the audience and was not available for election.
- ↑ The resident with the most nomination votes could determine the 3 nominees. Tanja was immune as a new resident, as was Serafino, who was protected by the public. Alex received 5 votes and decided that Hassan, Isi and Marcel S. were nominated.
- ↑ Mandy was immune as a new resident. Isi was protected by the audience. Each resident received 2 votes. He was able to give one vote to an “old resident” and a second to a “new resident” (moving in after day 64, read: Franco, Mandy, Nora, Serafino, Steffi and Tanja). Serafino received the most votes there. With the “old” residents, Alex and Hassan had the most votes. The audience decided that Alex should be nominated second.
- ↑ The resident with the most votes had to determine his two competitors for the move himself (an "old" and a "new" resident). Since after the regular nomination both Nora and Tanja had the same number of votes, the audience decided that Nora should be nominated. Nora then chose Isi and Tanja.
- ^ The mothers of the residents nominated. Steffi's mother didn't want to take part, the voice fell. Marcel could not be nominated by a protective vote of the audience.
- ↑ The audience protected Marcel from the nomination.
- ↑ No female residents could be nominated. The audience decided that Marcel should be nominated automatically (due to various rule violations).
- ↑ The residents could nominate themselves. Isi was protected by the audience.

9th season
The ninth season started on December 8th, 2008 and ended after 211 days on July 6th, 2009. The profit was again 250,000 euros. The season's motto was "Heaven and Hell". Half of the residents lived in "heaven", a luxurious living area. This area was separated from "hell" by a wall. The inhabitants of this area wore uniform clothing and had to perform various services for the inhabitants of "heaven". The house consisted of 2 floors and a spiral staircase led to the bedrooms. Changes between the areas could take place, for example, through matches won or rule violations. A slide led from the 2nd floor straight into "Hell". However, due to the persistently weak quotas, the concept was almost completely revised on January 6, 2009. The motto was now "Big Brother Reloaded". Both the rules and the soundtrack as well as the furniture of the house have been changed. During the redesign, the residents lived in the match room. The areas were now more clearly delimited from one another, the residents of “Hell” only lived on a limited area in the garden. The entire interior belonged to "heaven". A drill instructor visited the residents several times . Every resident who had to leave the house after the audience had voted could symbolically shoot a poisonous arrow. The named resident then mostly had to complete a sentence. Furthermore, for the first time, ex-residents from previous seasons moved back into the Big Brother house as regular residents.
A daily summary with the highlights of the previous day was broadcast on RTL II from Monday to Saturday at 7 p.m. The weekly live show started at 9:15 pm on Mondays. For the first time the episodes were broadcast in 16: 9 . The season was broadcast live from the house by sevenload and Premiere 24 hours. Sevenload also ran the Big Brother website again. There was also a quiz show “Call Big Brother” on 9Live, as well as live broadcasts and daily summaries. The program “Planet 9”, which was temporarily renamed “Big Planet”, was renamed again and last broadcast as “Planet”.
On July 6th Daniel won the award of 250,000 euros ahead of Marcel with 55% of the votes.
Miriam Pielhau moderated the decision shows. Outside reporter was Alida-Nadine Lauenstein .

10th season
The tenth Big Brother season went on air on January 11, 2010 on RTL 2 and ended after 211 days on August 9. As in the previous seasons, the profit was 250,000 euros, while the runner-up received a car and the third-placed winner received a trip. RTL II broadcast a one-hour summary of the day at 7:00 p.m. daily with the highlights of the previous day. Until June 7th, the station showed a special about the highlights of the past seasons instead of a daily summary, which was discontinued due to poor audience ratings. The weekly decision show began on Mondays at 9:15 p.m. and was moderated by Aleksandra Bechtel for the first time since the fourth season, while Alida Kurras took over the external moderation. For the first time there was a live commentator with Ulrich Potofski , who accompanied the move-in in the opening show and the matches in the outdoor area of the house in the subsequent live shows. The motto of the tenth Big Brother season was “Everyone has a secret”, the title song “Brave New World” was sung by the German pop group Culcha Candela .
The tenth season initially consisted of two buildings that were completely separated from each other, the "Big Brother House" and the so-called "Secret House". The Big Brother house was very modern, classy and spacious, while the much smaller Secret house with its rubbish spread around the house looked like a messie house . The residents of the Secret House knew nothing of the existence of the other house, the residents of the Big Brother House in turn were informed of the existence of the Secret House after just one day and were then allowed to follow the events there through video recordings.
In the first decision show, Pisei La was the first candidate to be relocated from the Secret to the Big Brother house as a result of a nomination, but the residents of the Secret house were led to believe that La should have left the Big Brother project completely. During the following week, all residents of the Secret House had to take part in a knowledge round, which, if not passed, threatened to move out immediately. However, the candidates, none of whom could successfully pass even one round of questions, did not leave the project, but moved into the actual Big Brother house. However, the remaining residents in the Secret House thought again that the relocated candidates had left the Big Brother project. It was not until the live show on January 25 that “Flying Uwe” Schüder and Kristina Source moved into the Big Brother house as the last two residents of the Secret House. In the same broadcast, Big Brother announced new, tougher rules. From now on, showering with warm water was only possible with shower tokens, and food, drink and other luxury items could only be won by successfully passing matches and weekly tasks. There was also a barred “penalty area” in the garden, in which the residents had to move in case of rule violations and lost matches. On February 1st, the “White Box” was used for the first time, a walk-in, oversized cube, where memory and skill matches were held through the use of certain lighting techniques.
The tenth season is known for its numerous conflicts and verbal arguments between the residents, who have mostly split the house into two warring camps. Above all, the resident Klaus Aichholzer was responsible for the dissatisfaction with his provocative demeanor and, through his open tactics, ensured that the residents he nominated were almost always on the drop-out list and were then selected by the audience. This ultimately led to the fact that for the first time the final consisted exclusively of candidates who did not even spend half of the season in the Big Brother house. On August 9th, Timo Grätsch finally won the award of 250,000 euros with 75.2% of the votes.
With an average of 8.6% market share among the advertising-relevant viewers, the audience ratings exceeded all expectations and made the tenth Big Brother season the most successful since season five. Because of this great success, Endemol and RTL II decided for the first time in German Big Brother history to extend a current season and end season ten not on June 7, but on August 9.

11th season
The eleventh season started on May 2, 2011 with the subtitle "The Secret" and should last 100 days. The final was scheduled for August 8, 2011. On June 30, 2011, Endemol announced that Big Brother 11 would be extended by 35 days, with the final taking place on September 12. Aleksandra Bechtel moderated this season. The opening show was moderated by Sonja Zietlow , as Bechtel was still on maternity leave at the time. As in the first season, “Leb” by Die 3. Generation was used again as the theme song.
15 residents lived in the house. In the end, the winner Rayo won 125,000 euros. The motto of the eleventh season was "The Secret". The special thing about this season was a new element that Endemol introduced for the first time. Every resident who moved into the house had an individual secret that had to be kept. If a resident revealed the secret of a roommate, he received a “golden ticket” for the final and was therefore safe from nominations. He kept this until another resident discovered another secret. If a resident's secret was revealed, he was automatically on the nomination list. The same thing happened when someone tried to solve the mystery but was wrong.
Rayo won with 53.9% of the callers. Second, the audience placed Daggy 46.1%. Leon came in third with 22.5%. Fourth Cosimo with 18.5% and fifth Benny with 6.2%.

Salvatore from Duisburg | June 20, 2011 | June 21, 2011 | The winner of the meeting with Jordan was allowed to spend one night in the house. |
Annina Ucatis | June 24, 2011 | June 24, 2011 | The resident of the ninth Big Brother season moved into the Big Brother house for Big Brother Christmas as a Christmas woman and surprised the residents with gifts. |
Isabelle from Dresden | July 12, 2011 | July 14, 2011 | The winner of the meeting with Steve was initially allowed to spend one night in the house. The visiting time was extended to July 14th. Isabelle was already a participant in the second season of the erotic show Deutschland sucht das Sexy Sport Clips Model and achieved second place there. |
Valencia Vintage | July 27, 2011 | July 27, 2011 | The ex-resident moved in as a guest for an indefinite period of time after a survey of the current residents in the house was in her favor. On the same day she moved out with her fiancé. |
Jordan Kane & David Ortega |
August 8, 2011 | August 15, 2011 | The two ex-residents moved into the house as landlords during the “Heidi Week” to support and control the residents with their weekly motto. During their stay, Cosimo serves them as a servant who has to cook, clean, wash etc. for them. They are also the only ones who are allowed to spend the night in the house (with Cosimo due to health problems). |
Gina-Lisa Lohfink | August 15, 2011 | August 16, 2011 | At the end of the “Heidi Week”, Gina-Lisa Lohfink moved into the Big Brother house as an overnight guest and surprised the residents during the live show. In addition, she received the "Key of Temptation", which she was allowed to give to a resident when she moved in. This protects the owner of the key from the last nomination. However, this protection has a consequence: the owner of the key must put another resident on the nomination list. |
Ross Antony | August 20, 2011 | August 21, 2011 | To loosen up the tough everyday life of Big Brother, Big Brother sent Ross Antony to the Big Brother house as a "secret" guest. Ingrid's job was to hide Ross from the other residents and to fulfill his every wish (e.g. fun in the pool, eating, going to the toilet, etc.) The other residents were however initiated into the action by Big Brother and should play along. If they persevered, Big Brother would give them a little surprise. After Ingrid lost the job, Big Brother announced that Ross would be in the house by the next evening and that a small party would be organized in his honor. |
Nadja Abd el Farrag | August 29, 2011 | September 1, 2011 | During the live show, Abd el Farrag appeared as a studio guest and decided the weekly task was passed. Then she moved into the house as a guest for 3.5 days. Shortly after moving in, Ingrid had to leave the house and it was nominated. |
Lisa Bund , Jasmin Rapior, Benson Aksoy |
September 5, 2011 | September 9, 2011 | To support the five finalists, the three ex-residents moved into the house for a few days and told the finalists about their impressions and what they experienced from the house. Quite often there were disputes as the ex-residents revealed some very honest opinions. |
12th season
Four years after the last RTL2 season, sixx broadcast a regular Big Brother season without prominent residents. The 12th season started on September 22nd, 2015. Thirteen residents moved into the new Big Brother house in Cologne for 92 days. The season ended on December 22nd, 2015. As Jochen Bendel confirmed in the webshow of the third Celebrity Big Brother season, there was only one living area, as in previous seasons. This was implemented at the request of many fans. Season 12 theme song was Sparks , British singer Neon Hitch .
The innovation of the twelfth season was the "team game procedure". Each resident has a team partner for the time in the Big Brother house. With this he must z. B. mastering weekly tasks is punished with this and in the case of a nomination of a team partner, the second team partner automatically follows on the nomination list. Jokers were also built into the gameplay. Each team was allowed to pull a joker from a lottery drum in week 2. These jokers can be redeemed during the entire season and include benefits such as: B. Nomination protection for one week, a double nomination vote, exemption from the weekly task, etc. Some jokers only bring advantages for the owner (the team member who drew the joker), others for the entire team of two. If the owner moves out before redeeming the joker, it is forfeited. Another innovation was the secret room, where various games, weekly tasks or rewards awaited the residents. On November 17, 2015, the residents were allowed to choose one of them for the first time who received an early wildcard for the final. Due to a tie between three residents, the audience was ultimately allowed to decide. On December 1st, Bianca and Christian were offered to spend € 3,000 - € 2,800 on a wildcard of their won € 3,000 to qualify one of them for the final. Both refused. During the live show on December 8th, a match for another final ticket began. All remaining residents had to hold up a golden ticket with both hands. The last resident to touch the ticket with at least one hand becomes the wildcard holder. Christian won. In another challenge, Thomas was able to secure the last ticket for the final.
The daily summaries were broadcast daily at 10:10 p.m. The exception was Tuesday, when the decision shows with nominations and excerpts ran from 8:15 p.m. As in 2005 and 2006, the season will be moderated by Jochen Bendel . As in the last two Celebrity Big Brother seasons, Pat Murphy spoke in the summary comments . In addition to broadcasting on sixx, the pay-TV broadcaster Sky exclusively offered a Big Brother 24-hour live channel, so there was no internet live stream. The live channel, like the live channel for the 3rd Celebrity Big Brother season, could be seen on SkySelect channel 389, which was only broadcast via transponder 47.
Lusy won the final on December 22nd, 2015 and thus a prize of 100,000.00 euros.

13th season
In April 2019, Sat.1 announced that it would broadcast a new season of the program for its 20th anniversary after a break of just over four years in spring 2020. The candidates could apply from May 2019. The season has been broadcast since February 10, 2020; Jochen Schropp , who has hosted Celebrity Big Brother since 2014, took over the moderation . In the move-in show, Schropp was supported by Melissa Khalaj .
Under “Big Brother 20”, a regular season without prominent residents should be seen for the first time. 14 candidates live in the Spartan “log house”, which has been adapted to the origins of the program, or in the modern “glass house”, where the residents received feedback from viewers for the first time.
After meager audience ratings, all residents moved into the “glass house” area on February 24, 2020. On March 5, 2020, the "Blockhaus" was reopened.
Due to the continued meager ratings, the station decided to let three celebrities move in on March 9th: Menowin Fröhlich , participant in Promi Big Brother 2015 and Jade Übach and Serkan Yavuz, who have already participated in several reality shows. In addition, the employee Romana moved in from Vienna.
Initially, the participants were not kept up to date on the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 diseases. Those who moved in on March 9, 2020 were not allowed to tell the other participants anything about the events due to an instruction from the production management. On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) officially declared the previous epidemic a pandemic and on March 17, 2020, the participants were informed about the COVID-19 pandemic . Since then, they have received the current status every Monday as part of the live show.
On May 18, 2020, the final was in which Cedric had secured a 100,000 euro prize.

criticism
The format, which was highly controversial when it was first introduced, was initially experienced as breaking a social taboo . The display of private life in the media was criticized and, connected with it, the ethically questionable interference of the television stations in the private life of the residents. Furthermore, the residents are given a certain image without their knowledge, which can have negative effects on life after Big Brother. Frequently, in the daily summaries, only scenes are shown that show the residents in a strong emotional state of mind, arguments and bullying are placed in the foreground for entertainment purposes . It was also criticized that the show's candidates were sometimes under great psychological pressure, which could be traumatic . The constant observation by cameras and living together with strangers in a confined space is a high burden. This is self-chosen, but is mainly accepted in view of the high winnings.
In 2004, the show came under criticism because it was explicitly filmed when a resident had a nipple piercing . The Commission for the Protection of Young People in the Media (KJM) and the Hamburg Institute for New Media (HAM) saw this as inappropriate in view of the airtime in the afternoon program.
At the beginning of season 5, the resident Sandra was dubbed a heartless mother in the tabloids because she had given her little son to her grandparents in order to move into the Big Brother house. As a result of the negative press, the child was allowed to stay with his mother in the house for an hour. Church and politics criticized the station's actions, which then took the resident out of the game against the will of the production company.
Again and again, residents drew attention to themselves through blatant misconduct. The resident Adrian (Season 8) had to leave the house because of a pedophile joke , as did his roommate Rebecca because of a National Socialist statement. Also in the eleventh season, a resident was removed from the house because of a National Socialist gesture. At that time, the resident René had indicated a Hitler mustache with his fingers.
In the course of the 10th season the resident Klaus rubbed his bottom on the pillow of roommate Lilly. He didn't have to leave the house, just like Carlos, who at the end of a live show insulted the audience, a roommate and her disabled son in the worst possible way, and even wished the latter death. During the open nomination in the live show on June 21, 2010 there was a scandal that was triggered by the resident René. When Daniel nominated Daniel, he cited a "deeply insulting, hurtful and disrespectful" nomination statement by accusing his fellow campaigner of selling his blows of fate, meaning his two deceased aunts and his deceased grandmother, on television to show pity from the audience to get. The other residents were shocked and stunned by the reason for the nomination, whereupon René was excluded from the Big Brother project with immediate effect.
Celebrity Big Brother in Germany
Due to the great success of Berlin - Tag & Nacht , no Big Brother was produced in 2012. On November 13, 2012, Endemol Germany managing director Marcus Wolter spoke of a continuation of the show. After a two-year break, the show switched to Sat.1 and has been broadcast there since September 13, 2013 under the title Promi Big Brother . On August 15, 2014, the second season started, nicknamed The Experiment . The third season started with a slightly different season concept on August 14, 2015.

Big Brother in Switzerland
Big Brother Switzerland was produced by Endemol and consisted of two seasons which were broadcast on TV3 . The first season in 2000 was a great success and accordingly drew another Big Brother edition, which took place in 2001. Although it did not match the ratings of the first season, the second edition was also successful.
After the official withdrawal of the US-American - Luxembourg SBS Broadcasting Group (SBS) in January 2001, the media group Tamedia AG ( Tages-Anzeiger ) had to finance the television station TV3 on its own. Finally, the station was discontinued on December 23, 2001, which also sealed the end of Big Brother Switzerland.
1st season
On September 3, 2000, the candidates moved into a residential container (153 m² living space) with a garden on the strictly guarded premises of the Glattfelden film studios near Zurich. On December 30, 2000, the first Big Brother edition in Switzerland ended after 106 days. With Daniela, for the first time ever, a woman won a Big Brother season. After her success, Daniela released a CD, as did other residents, including Fabian and Nadim with a song together. Stefan, on the other hand, published a cookbook with recipes that he had prepared in the container, among other things.
Dani Fohrler moderated the first season, he was supported by the external presenter Karin Lanz . The official song came from "Lasso" with the title "Bisch ready". In addition, the Big Brother magazine appeared weekly, and a PC game was also published.
