The Frauenbrücke Ost-West eV is a non-partisan citizens' initiative and an association based in Emsdetten . The regional and national events focus on getting to know each other personally, but also on discussing socio-political issues.

history

Renate Schmidt

After the experiences with the reunification, today's honorary chairwoman of the association Helga Niebusch-Gerich developed the idea in 1991 to found an association in which women from East and West Germany can get to know each other. In August 1991, the then Bundestag Vice- President Renate Schmidt took over the patronage, from October Regine Hildebrandt , the then State Minister for Labor, Social Affairs, Health and Women of Brandenburg . On April 9, 1992, seven women from the Rhein-Neckar district founded the association. The initiator and first chairwoman Helga Niebusch-Gerich received the Theodor-Heuss-Medal on January 29, 1994 on behalf of the association . From 1995 to 2004 Elke Plöger was chairwoman of the association.

Every year the association organizes three national educational policy forums, where women from East and West can get to know and exchange ideas. There are also readings and discussion evenings at regional level. During the first 20 years, the focus was on the internal German dialogue, meanwhile the association is also turning to European issues.

The first chairwoman of the association is Gundula Grommé , the second is Barbara Hackenschmidt .

The association has been a member of the German Women's Council since 2008 .

In 2014 the association received the Regine Hildebrandt Prize .

Women's Bridge Prize Foundation

The Frauenbrückepreis Foundation was established in 1999 , with the aim of overcoming the consequences of the forty-year separation between East and West Germany. The foundation awards the Frauenbrückepreis every two years.
