Bottom of the table

First in the 2000/01 season of the Bundesliga and thus German men's championship was FC Bayern Munich . The Munich team achieved the lowest number of points (63) that a team has ever won since the introduction of the three-point rule. The season began on August 11, 2000 with the game Borussia Dortmund against Hansa Rostock and ended on May 19, 2001. The 2000/01 season holds the record that the clubs came from eleven different federal states.

Season overview

The Bundesliga 2000/01 is considered to be the season with a particularly memorable championship decision: Since the 29th matchday, FC Schalke 04 have been top of the table ahead of FC Bayern Munich . Before the 33rd (penultimate) match day, Bayern and Schalke were tied with a better goal difference for Schalke.

In the 90th minute of the 33. Gameday fell almost simultaneously two key goals: For Bayern the just substitute met Alexander Zickler to 2: 1 home win against 1. FC Kaiserslautern , just seven seconds after Krasimir Balakov for VfB Stuttgart , the Had scored a 1-0 winning goal against Schalke. As a result, FC Bayern regained the top of the table and had three points ahead of Schalke 04 before the last match day. Bayern therefore needed - if Schalke were to win against relegation candidate SpVgg Unterhaching - at least a draw at Hamburger SV , since Bayern's goal difference continued to be worse.

Schalke won their last game against Unterhaching, while Bayern drew against HSV and thus became German champions .

After Schalke were behind with 0: 2 and Unterhaching took the lead again with 2: 3 in the 69th minute after Schalke had equalized in the meantime, Schalke won 5: 3.

In the game of HSV against Bayern Munich, led by referee Markus Merk , Hamburg scored 1-0 in the 90th minute through Sergej Barbarez . In the fourth minute of stoppage time, an indirect free kick in the opponent's penalty area equalized 1-1. Patrik Andersson shot the ball presented by Stefan Effenberg into the goal - his only goal for Bayern Munich. In Merk's opinion , goalkeeper Mathias Schober, who was loaned to Hamburger SV by FC Schalke 04, had previously picked up a return illegally by hand .

Since the final whistle in Gelsenkirchen had already taken place a few minutes earlier, the alleged title win was celebrated there when the news of Bayern's equalization arrived. Schalke then went down in the history of the Bundesliga as so-called champions of the heart or four-minute champions . The season finale was the inspiration for a 45-minute television documentary by WDR called "Four Minutes German Masters".

In the table cellar, VfL Bochum and Eintracht Frankfurt were determined prematurely as relegated; In a long-distance duel, Unterhaching and newly promoted Energie Cottbus fought for the last non-relegation place. Cottbus went into this duel with a point ahead and secured the first division with a 1-0 win at TSV 1860 Munich .

The Brazilian Alex Alves in the service of Hertha BSC scored the goal of the year in the home game against Markus Pröll in 1. FC Köln 's goal with a shot from 52 meters straight after the restart.
