The European route 4 (E4) is a European route that extends almost completely through Sweden in a north-south direction , but also to a very small extent through Finland . It essentially runs along the west coast of the Baltic Sea , starting in Tornio in Finland and ending in Helsingborg in Sweden. It is Sweden's second longest European road after European route 45 . The E4 is intended to connect to European route 55 in Helsingør . Efforts were made as part of the reorganization of the European roads in 1985 to rename the E4 to the E55. However, these were not implemented as this would have meant an exchange of the road signs in Sweden.
On many sections of the E4, especially in southern and central Sweden, it is developed as a motorway . Some of the other sections of the route have four or three lanes and are either used in 2 + 1 traffic or two lanes and have the character of a country road , often with verges. There are still many exits along these routes.
