Remarks

  1. No gold medals were awarded at the Olympic Games in 1896. The winner received a silver, the second a bronze medal, the third received nothing. However, the current scheme is used in the list so that all results can be compared with one another.
  2. The 1906 Olympic Intermediate Games have no official status. For this reason, the results will not be included in the list of the most successful participants and in the nation ranking.
  3. The Dutch team was disqualified because Aad van der Hoeck had tested positive for Koramin. The fourth-placed Belgian team did not move up because no doping control was carried out on them.
