List of museums and monuments about the Franco-Prussian War
This list gives an overview of museums and memorials that focus on the history of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/1871 .
It is sorted by country and does not claim to be complete.
Types of monuments
Various types of memorials commemorate the Franco-Prussian War and the process of unification . Not part of this list are the Kaiser Wilhelm monuments and the Bismarck monuments , which also remind of their role in the Franco-Prussian War. In Germany, the German-Danish War of 1864, the German War and the Franco-German War were understood as the German Wars of Unification . A number of memorials therefore commemorate several of these wars. This list also includes those monuments that name other of these wars in addition to the Franco-German War, but not monuments that have wars as a general theme. The monuments also include the large number of peace oaks and peace linden trees that were planted in 1870/71 (the imperial oaks and imperial linden trees are reserved for separate lists).
Memorial culture
The Franco-German War was a formative event for contemporaries. The soldiers experienced the war as a conflict between mass armies, to which hundreds of thousands of people fell victim. For France, the war was associated with the loss of the supremacy on the European continent that it had held since the time of Louis XIV . On the German side, however, a nation state was constituted for the first time . The German Empire as the new center of power changed the balance of power on the continent and ended the previous particularism in Central Europe. Due to personal experiences and the major political changes, the war remained firmly anchored in the consciousness of contemporaries. In France as in Germany, but also in Switzerland and Belgium, numerous monuments and memorial plaques were created to commemorate the fallen. In Germany in particular, numerous streets and squares were renamed after officers and locations of the battles. However, the even greater dimension of violence in the two world wars made memories of the war of 1870/1871 fade. The Musée de l'Armée in Paris (2017) and the Military History Museum (2020) in Dresden presented major special exhibitions on the war .
France
The culture of remembrance of the war in France and Germany differed significantly. While the victory could be celebrated in Germany, the representation on the French side concentrated on the one hand on the memory of the victims and the heroism of their own soldiers. The siege of Belfort in particular often served as a motive for this courage. As a result of the war, the realm of Alsace-Lorraine had become part of the German Empire. The culture of remembrance here corresponds to that in other parts of Germany. The list is therefore divided for France.

Berlin | Berlin Tiergarten | Great zoo | In 1874, under the direction of Alexander Calandrelli, a group of war memorials was created, which were erected on the Königsbrücke . Schinkel's castle bridge figures were the model. After the bridge was demolished, they were erected near Königsplatz. In 1938 another relocation took place in the (no longer existing) Rusternallee. Today the four preserved pieces are in the Great Zoo. All are in late baroque, naturalistic forms. Originally, the allegories for Exodus to Fight and Happy Homecoming and Fight and Wounding stood opposite each other. The ensemble also included a group of four figures in the same style depicting German rivers. All figures are under monument protection, see list of cultural monuments in Berlin-Tiergarten . Belgium
Belgium was not a participant in the Franco-German War. However, since the German-speaking Eupen-Malmedy was annexed by Belgium after the First World War , there are war memorials in this part of Belgium that were created during the time of the German Empire. The culture of remembrance here corresponds to that in Germany. In other parts there are monuments that were erected either by the French or the German side. The list is therefore divided for Belgium.

Switzerland
Switzerland was neutral in the Franco-German War, see also Switzerland in the Franco-German War . Switzerland's main contact with the war was when the French Armée de l'Est crossed the border , disarmed them and subsequently interned them . The internees were distributed to 190 localities. In a number of these places there are memorial stones for the internees who died there. There are around 30 French monuments aux morts throughout Switzerland . Most of them were built after the war of 1870/71. The Bourbaki Panorama is the most important memorial for this internment and at the same time the only museum on the Franco-Prussian War in Switzerland.
