ARVW 2008 in Riga - The tail fins are easy to see, but the bow wings are missing

ARVW = Aerodynamic Research Volkswagen

In 1980, the study showed what was possible with diesel technology and known aerodynamic findings at the time. The vehicle had a 5 meter long, with only 84 cm extremely flat and aerodynamic body (Cd value: 0.15) made of plastic. There were stub wings on the bow and tail fins on the stern . A six-cylinder diesel engine with a displacement of 2.4 liters was used as the drive, generating 175 hp by means of a turbocharger , but transmitting its power to the drive axle via a chain. Their durability was the reason why VW did without the long distances prescribed by the FIA when the company tried to set speed records with the vehicle. With the technical requirements, the vehicle was able to drive 362 km / h, the consumption was 13.6 liters of fuel per 100 km. Two copies were built. VW set two speed records with the car: 345.26 km / h over 500 kilometers and 353.88 km / h over an hour's drive.

Research vehicle for reducing fuel consumption based on the VW Passat B2 .

1981: VW Auto 2000

Car 2000

The Auto 2000 is a concept vehicle based on the VW Golf I , which shows new production and drive technologies. It should achieve lower fuel consumption. In addition, many plastic parts (including the rear axle made of plastic) and supercharged engines with a small displacement are installed. First VW presented two versions with diesel engines (1.2 l, 3 cylinder, 39 kW (53 PS) with turbo-charging or 44 kW (60 PS) with compressor), later a 1.05 l four-cylinder gasoline engine with compressor. The VW Scooter is a three-wheeled prototype with wing doors based on the VW Polo, whose four-cylinder engine is installed transversely and drives the front wheels via a four-speed gearbox. The engine has a displacement of 1378 cm³ and develops 66 kW (90 hp) at 6000 rpm; the maximum torque is 121 Nm at 3800 rpm. The front wheels with 175/60 VR 13 tires are suspended from wishbones and MacPherson struts; the rear wheel with 235/55 VR 15 tires is guided on a single swing arm .

Thanks to a drag coefficient (C w ) of only 0.25 and a frontal area of 1.44 m², the scooter reaches a top speed of 201 km / h with an empty weight of 550 kg (without driver); It accelerated from zero to 100 km / h in 10.9 seconds. The gross vehicle weight is 760 kg.

The vehicle body is made of plastic and placed on a load-bearing steel floor assembly. It is 3175 mm long, 1498 mm wide and 1235 mm high and offers little space for two people with an interior width of 1060 mm, whereby the driver's seat is slightly wider than the front passenger's seat. Removable wing doors make it possible to drive the scooter open. The luggage compartment above the rear wheel or under the rear window holds around 100 liters; there was no spare wheel.

1989: VW Futura

Volkswagen Futura
Interior of the Futura

The VW Futura presented at the IAA 1989 is a minivan-like four-seater test model with two gull-wing doors that contained the technology that was feasible at the time. The car is already equipped with functions that were only gradually introduced into vehicles from around the year 2000. The car has:

  • Self-steering parking aid with four-wheel steering ; available from VW today as optional Park Assist ; including distance warning
  • electric power steering
  • electric handbrake (toggle switch instead of lever)
  • Road navigation system (based on traffic information, RDS )
  • Active sound absorbers to reduce car noise (microphones record noise, and certain frequencies are played by means of the radio, which are supposed to neutralize unwanted noise sources according to the principle of anti- noise)
  • integrated car phone
  • LC display for navigation, operating instructions, on-board computer and speedometer
  • Odor filter for air nozzles
  • Traffic control system (in cooperation with control centers or other participants to bypass traffic jams or construction sites)
  • Panorama roof made of holographic thermal insulation glass
  • Integrated child seat (part of the seat can be opened as a handle).

The introduction of the gasoline direct injection engine with VW's in-house G-charger to reduce fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions , which was well-known in 1989 but had not yet been developed for mass production, was still progressive at that time . The 4-cylinder 1715 cm³ engine has an output of 60 kW (82 hp) at 4200 rpm and 155 Nm at 2500 rpm and consumes around 6.7 liters per 100 kilometers according to the ECE standard .
